Well Played: Naomi Watts

well-played

I love it when Naomi Watts gets it right:

This feels right. And the more said about her clutch, the better. I want it. I want to cradle it next to me every night and wake up with my cheek pressed against it every morning. It is my soulmate.

Speaking of people whom I once suspected might be my soulmate:

He is delicious as long as you don’t look below his knees.

This is a difficult color to pull off — puce — but I love it on her. What a great dress and it suits and fits her perfectly. And I agree, that clutch is really something. VERY well played.

Puce – isn’t that a green? This looks like lavender to me. Just curious.

She looks amazing…and I love me some young Obi Wan Kenobi.

        0

No, puce isn’t green but it also isn’t the color of Naomi’s dress. Puce is like a purple- brown or dark red.
        She looks beautiful.
Ewan McGregor is hot as always but what is with the clown shoes?

From Wikipedia: “Puce is the French word for flea. The color is said to be the color of the bloodstains remaining on linen or bedsheets, even after being laundered, from a flea’s droppings or after a flea has been killed.”

Puce is like a really garish fuchsia, very bright. This dress is definitely more lilac/lavender.

          0

That’s why “puce” is so close to “puke”.

          0

          thanks ?! ;-)

in other words, puke- I mean puce- is the least-easy-to-pull-off, distant relative to red to pull off ?

      • CreLa
        0

If you don’t know, just spend 1.5 s and google image “puce.” The first result is a square of color that is exactly the same shade as Naomi’s dress.

          Oh, that ^

          0

Wait, not that. Sorry. Definitely google puce, but the first image that comes up is a flea. A lot of the images are the garish fuchsia I described – I’ve never heard a lilac or lavender shade described as puce.

See, I can’t get behind this color on her… Her hair looks almost greenish, and her face looks not quite right with this color as well. I think she’s lovely, and I LOVE everything about the dress except the color (on her). As always, it’s quite possible this looked better in person and lighting from the paps just made it look not quite as perfect.

Another side note, Ewan McGregor looks great as long as you don’t look below his knees (I’d say above the waist, really, those pants are not good) OR ABOVE HIS EYEBROWS. That hair is not good.

“Trainspotting.” If that doesn’t ring any bells, he sadly took part in the Star Wars prequels as Obi Wan Kenobi. If that doesn’t ring any bells, you probably know him from the collective subconscious of Fug Nation….

You’re killin’ me ladies…. Ewan McGregor played the lead in “Moulin Rouge” with Nicole Kidman. He was dreamy in that, and still is. Well, I can’t stop laughing at the clown shoes. However, I wouldn’t kick him outta bed for eating crackers.

          And, Naomi looks quite lovely.

Ahh swooon, he was SO dreamy in Moulin Rouge. I liked his hair color in that movie, too. I’m not sure if this is his natural color or not, but I prefer him with the darker brown hair. PS: I’m still swooning.

Naomi looks good, but let’s talk about Ewan!!! WHY are all the Scottish boys, HOT??? Ewan, Gerard, James McAvoy…even Sean Connery and he’s like 150 years old.

Sigh. Ewan. I used to have an elaborately planned fantasy wedding in the highlands, in which Ewan marries me in a kilt, and then we drive of to our castle on his vintage motorcycle. In revisiting this fantasy, I will allow him to change out of the kilt before getting on the motorcycle. Scotland forever.

I think they both look great. The boots don’t bother me. They’re kinda his thing. I think the only footwear he could don that would offend would be those Thomas Jane chicken feet. But who am I kidding, I wouldn’t kick him out of bed for those either.

Because it would be ironic and you’d fall into fits of laughter that somehow would end up with a kiss that would make The Notebook kiss look like something out of National Lampoon…….

I’m not feeling her outfit–both the color and the cut make her look like a wan wee thing. But thanks for the Ewan, boots and all. I’ll have one of those.

I like the colour on her, but I don’t like the slightly wrinkled bit above the belt. It’s not a huge thing but once I noticed it, it bugged me.

  20. vandalfan

I don’t care for her hair, and the plain even straps with gaping decollete. The bodice kind of needs some more interest or embellishment, a V neck or thinner straps maybe. Him? Paul Bunyan phoned and wants his boots back, Obi-Wan.

You had to go and include Ewan, didn’t you? He is my ultimate, if I get once free chance in my marriage card, Ewan would take it. My day is now complete since he’s popped up for viewing.

Oh, Naomi, you look nice too.

good lord. to the ladies who don’t know who ewan is… how is it possible for a female or gay male to not know who/what ewan is? you don’t need internet or tv or movies to know who he is. you just breathe in the air wherever in the world you are, and you just know he exists.

and fug girls, whatever about his clodhoppers. i’d cut many, many bitches for those things.

What I like: McGregor, head to toe. Also, the way those pleats or whatever are falling below Naomi’s knees, and just generally the fit of the skirt on her dress is very graceful and lovely. Her makeup is also a plus, here, I think.

What I don’t like: the overall mumsiness of the dress on her–mainly, I think due to the combo of the fabric (texture and color) and the icky bodice. It’s so horrible, I don’t know how to put it into words: the neckline (what is that even? very awkward, for one thing), the peplum, the belt. Also, her hair is bad here.

OMG, you ladies are kicked out of the Ewan McGregor Is my Fantasy Boyfriend Club! It’s exactly that sort of detail that makes him so damned tasty! He’s different, a little edgy, unconventional. You walk up to him, he leans in to hear because the room is so loud, and you tell him how much you’ve always adored him. Then he throws his head back in raucous laughter, because, clearly, you are the wittiest thing to have ever walked the planet. Then he fixes you with those eyes, those eyes…

Yeah, those shoes ain’t bothering me at all.

I am with Buttercup on this… MCGREGOR can be poachin’ in me park ANYTIME. Have you ever seen an interview with him? I guess I’m totally in the minority here (and I get that it’s hard to focus on anything besides Ewan), but I don’t think the top looks like it fits that well. And her breasts are really uneven–the left one is so much lower. I know that’s a reality for a lot of women, but it’s really obvious here…the bottom is gorgeous, but from the waist up I don’t like it :(

    • Zed
      0

I don’t like the dress – the colour makes the fabric look like that sort of wash’n'wear polyester that old ladies wear. And the straps and the neckline (which is far too low to be attractive) don’t go together. The bottom half of the dress would be lovely in almost any other colour.

      • Helen
        0

I agree, the fabric looks cheap, though I’m sure it wasn’t – maybe the color is the problem, there. I also don’t think this color (whatever one wishes to call it! :-D ) works for her, at all.

I say this should be an Unfug, and I would make it a deep, jewel-y purple, raise the neckline just a little, it wouldn’t take much, while also making it a more flattering V instead of a U shape, and maybe snip a little from the armholes to narrow the fabric there and show off her pretty shoulders.

        • pantsonfire

Great suggestions, Helen. I still don’t really love the peplum, but I think your changes would do wonders.

Wow, so much controversy over the name of a color. So, of course I feel compelled to put in my own two cents. Puce, to me, is an off-red or faded red — which fits right in with anny’s contribution of the genuinely disgusting definition from Wikipedia of old blood stains. I would call this dress mauve, perhaps, and it a tough color to wear — I had a V-neck top of this shade that looked so much better off than on. Other options I suggest for color names are orchid or thistle, straight out of the ol’ Crayola 64-pack from back in the day. I just learned — again, thanks, Wikipedia — that thistle has been retired. Eh, it was pretty much interchangeable with orchid anyhow.

Oh, the dress itself? I like it but don’t love it. The bodice doesn’t sit quite right with me. Too tight? Too much sternum? Needs a necklace? The bottom half is lovely.

As for Ewan, my perception of him is forever tainted from the first movie I saw him in: Trainspotting. That scene with the toilet. You know which one I mean. I can’t look at him without thinking of that.

Nope, sorry – I must make an obligatory 80s reference: Ewan looks as if he’s the loser of the “Rik Mayall in The Young Ones Lookalike Contest.” Google it. And, yikes.
