Fugs and Pieces, February 22 2013

fugs-and-pieces

IT’S ALMOST OSCAR SUNDAY! Are you ready? I am all stocked up on Diet Coke and Cheetos, myself. We’ll be live-blogging the E! Red Carpet for our friends at Vulture starting Sunday afternoon at 3pm Pacific — we’ll toss up a link when it’s live — and live-tweeting along with our friends at People and People Stylewatch, so please follow us at @fuggirls! Until then:

– A friend of ours at Glossi.com let us play around with their platform for turning pictures and Web content into a sort of virtual magazine. For our test run, we picked out the awards-season hits and misses of six female Oscar contenders, and then highlighted them comments from Fug Nationals — because you already know what we think, but maybe you didn’t see what your fellow readers said. Here is the cover:

As you know, our actual graphic design skills are poor, but who needs funky text and logos when you can use that sweet face? How could we NOT feature this photo? To see the whole thing, click on it (or click here).

The Hollywood Reporter went through an Oscar ballot with an Academy member as he voted. He’s cranky and fascinating. (THR)

– Sally Holmes has done an entire series about prepping for the Oscars over at The Cut — from visiting a plastic surgeon to a professional make-up artist, to doing a cleanse, and finally, picking a dress. The whole series is fab. (The Cut)

– I love it when people come up with themed menus for their Oscar parties. This one looks particularly delish. (Eatori)

– GQ examines the new rules for the leading man. (GQ)

– The Cut talks to one of the photogs in the pit at Fashion Week — the best, most crammed seat in the house. (The Cut)

Michelle Williams’s hair IS adorable. (Lainey Gossip)

– This look at Bill Cunningham, the famous New York Times photographer, will make your heart swell three sizes, I promise. (The Cut)

The 12 best Oscar acceptance speeches. Do you agree? (Film.com)

– Considering the Hilary Mantel to-do, it’s probably a good time to check in on The Duchess Diaries. (Socialite Life)

This sea turtle just got prosthetic fins. Science is awesome. (Time)

Shia LaBeouf needs a vacation, right? (Celebitchy)

How much do models really make at Fashion Week? Not as much as you’d think. (Refinery29)

Ugh, that Oscar voter article just made me mad: “I also don’t vote for anyone whose name I can’t pronounce” Just shut up, xenophobic ass.

That guy is one bitter s.o.b…. I also want ‘Skyfall’ to win Best Song, but this “If ‘Skyfall’ does not win I will fillet my next-door neighbor’s dog.” is so appalling that it makes me want to punch him in the face and kick his sorry ass!

I always enjoy this feature, but I really thought the Oscar selection and leading man articles were very interesting this week. Good for a pre-Oscars theme. Thanks!

Jessica, I look forward to Fugs & Pieces all week. You find great stuff. I could have said that any week, but this week I am full of wine, cheese, and meat and feel compelled to share.

I’m certain I’ve commented this before, but Fugs and Pieces is by far the best weekly roundup out there. Thanks for finding consistently great stuff and for passing it on! Thumbs up.

Sigh… I used to throw the best Oscar parties. Appetizers themed to every Best Picture nominee. Pools, prizes and really good booze. The last one I threw, no one even stayed past 10. Getting old is lame!!

Observations regarding the Oscar acceptance speeches:
    Ruth Gordon looked amazing.
Jane Fonda looks like Miley Cyrus.
Not a huge fan of Sandra Bullock’s film presence, but she looked stunning that night and it is so annoying that her stupid ex husband had to be there.
Where is Cuba’s speech? How does that not make the cut?

Thank for the Glossi Magazine. It was amazing! I look forward to many more, perhaps for Fug Madness?
