Fug or Fab: Maggie Gyllenhaal

fug-or-fab

Yes, she has feathers sprouting from her abdomen and also she’s bracing her clutch against her waist like it’s holding her innards in, AND YET:

I kind of like this. I wish the feathers, um, emerged in a less haphazard fashion, and I wish the shoes were…other….(I don’t now what other, but something; you tell me), but overall, it’s kicky and I suspect it looks exponentially better in motion. She’s like a flapper in mourning. And if you don’t think I’d read a book called Flapper In Mourning, you don’t know me at ALL.

Again, she’s out of season … this is very fall/winter … and that knitted number she had on yesterday was from the Dior fall collection … it’s not even the Fourth of July yet, for feather’s sake … wear something summery!

I’m going to bet this looked better in person. A little motion, a less awkward pose, and it was probably cute.

It’s an UnFug It Up. A little more tailoring through the midsection, taming the feathers so that they no longer look like somebody stapled James Brown’s headsuit to an LBD, and a pop of color in the footwear department would make this great. Also, look into bracelets.

That’s what I was going to say. It needs to be tailored a bit in the midsection, and tidy up the insanity of the feathers. A funky purple or bright blue shoe would have been amazing, but Maggie G is not exactly known for that.

      Love it in theory though!

I think I am reacting so positively because feather skirts/dresses are usually part and parcel of some serious micro-mini naked times. Also, they’re usually shiny – made with big ol’ feathers with a lot of surface sheen. I like that it’s covered up/fitted, black, and fairly matte.

I just wish that the feathering didn’t start…there. A little lower would have been less…awkward. Cuz..ummm..yeahhhh.

She looks like she missed the last couple of waxing appointments or so.

Agree, I would like it more if there was a band around the end instead of climbing up her leg. I think her face looks great though!

I should hate it. I think she has gorgeous gams, and this length isn’t doing them justice. The feathers are cheerleader-in-mourning pompoms – I expect her to lift them up at any moment and give a send-off cheer.

However the top part is great, add a cuff, and somehow I love her despite it all.

She was on watch what happens live last night and wore this dress. It;s actually really pretty. At one point she stood up and turned around. The movement of the dress was very modern. Reminded me of something Audrey Hepburn might have worn.

Hi Bamerist, thanks that someone else watched WWHL too. I’m loving the pixie cut on her. She was so sweet and soft-spoken – a perfect foil for Martha? Also, how bummed am I that my invite to that cast party in Cancun where she danced with Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx was the DJ, got lost in the mail.

Imagine how much bathtub gin would be involved in the plot of Flapper in Mourning. And rent parties to pick up the pieces. And stress Charleston-ing.

Yes! And I think it has to be part murder mystery, too, so the heroine has reasons to dress up in fabulous costumes and wigs.

I justreally want a less mumsy neckline. A perfect bateau, or something to show off her shoulders or neck – that wide, clunky tank wastes her neck and gamine hair.

Lea Michele did this better three years ago in this Romona Keveza

I don’t like how there are lines in the fabric that point to the top of where the feathers start – it gives her the illusion of a larger stomach. Maybe if the dress was fitted better around her torso, it wouldn’t do that?

Also, I think her shoes should be made out of something different… I don’t have a substitute, but I think that is what makes them look odd to me.

I’m sorry, but she’s gone Full Ostrich.

I think I could get fully on board if the front didn’t look like overgrown pubic hair.

Like several above, I would edit this just a little – I’d start the feathers at the waist instead, fit the waist better, and shorten it just a few inches – but basically, I like it. I appreciate that the shoes aren’t competing with this really fairly avant-garde design, so those, I’d leave as they are.

With or without those small changes, overall, I think this is kooky Maggie at her kooky best. And she looks comfortable and happy in it!

I think the problem is that it’s too big.
I know we almost NEVER say this here…but Maggie, you should have gone down a size or even two.
I have a sneaking suspicion the feathers are supposed to start more at the waist and the skirt is supposed to be above the knee.
I mean, REALLY look at it….it so could have worked.

You know what, yeah, maybe just getting it smaller in the first place would have fixed the minor issues with it. By Jove, I think you’ve got it!

Less feathers + gold earrings + red stilettos & lips = I’m all for it! Can you please lend me the book when you’re done reading it? Thanks!

NO, I think that she looks lovely and chic. Finally someone looks pretty, cheerful, not thrusting her fake melons about, and it’s a daily double because Maggie is actually talented.

I misread “emerged” as “emergerd in a less haphazard fashion”, and…I accept.

I just so love this hair on her that I can hardly see the rest. Her head is killing it.

It’s very cute. She can get away with a lot, with that super-feminine face. If I tried this, I’d get called “Sir” by mistake!

I also love this haircut on her. She looks adorable. And I like the dress despite the fact that the feathers appear to be exploding out of her left ovary.

This is awful and she is awful. Why is Maggie Gyllenhaal always smirking?
