Fugs and Pieces, April 13, 2012

fugs-and-pieces

This week was a killer. Let’s relax:

This birthday calendar for fictional characters is AWESOME. (Flavorwire)

– This piece about real-life love lessons learned from fictional characters includes Pacey Witter and Laurie from Little Women. Yeah, I thought you’d like that. (Refinery29)

This is a really interesting article from Vulture about the state of the TV recap. I’m not just saying that because the commenters mention that Heather’s Ringer recaps are genius (which they are), but I of course AM biased in favor of recapping because if Heather and I had never worked at Television Without Pity together back in the day NONE OF US WOULD BE HERE NOW.  Recapping The X-Files was one of the most satisfying gigs I’ve ever had, still. I was so young then. So so young…. (Vulture)

– Speaking of Vulture and TV, they also predict some of the best new pilots on tap. (Vulture)

– I don’t think I need to tell you anything more about this story in Smithsonian than the blurb they’ve provided: What Happened to Kalinka Bamberski?: In an exclusive excerpt, read about the mysterious death of a young teenager that inspired a complicated web of European intrigue. You had me at “European intrigue.” (Smithsonian)

– WHAT HATH J LO HEW WROUGHT? Men are now…deep breath…PE-JAZZLING. (New York Times)

This is a fascinating piece about Kanye and Jay-Z. (The Atlantic)

You surely want to see shots of them filming Les Mis, right? I am a little excited about that movie. Even though I have REAL REAL ISSUES with the Anne Hathaway casting. (Lainey Gossip)

– OMG. Burger King is testing a bacon sundae. I love bacon, but STOP THE MADNESS. (Time)

Jennifer Lawrence is great. From this interview: ” I don’t really care about clothes, to be honest. I mean, when I’m on red carpets I’ve started to become more vocal about the things that I want to wear just because it’s better to look at photographs later and like the dress I was wearing, rather than see myself wearing something I was told to wear and which I hate,” and, even better, “I loved working with both Josh and Liam, but as far as Katniss is concerned, I think that with all she has going on, the very bottom of her priorities list is the question of who her next boyfriend is going to be.” Amen, sister. Every interview I see or read with Jennifer Lawrence makes me love her more. She has a great attitude, and is absolutely hilarious.

Jessica, I had a really slow week at work and started re-reading your X-Files recaps to pass the time (of course, I had to awkwardly explain why I kept bursting out laughing, but whatever. It was worth it.)

I live 10 min walk from the Greenwich Les Miserables film set and have been lurking around there for the last 5 days after work but haven’t seen much apart from a lot of extras, a gigantic wooden elephant, black carriages and today a horse parade. Russell Crowe and Hugh Jackman supposedly were on set on Tuesday for a short time but I haven’t seen any of the stars.

i’m really interested to read that recap article on Vulture because, as much as I love the site, i really don’t enjoy most of their recaps. they’re very straightforward – basically they just tell you exactly what happened, very dryly, which, you know, is fine because that’s the definition of a recap, but i like a little pizazz in mine. the article may touch on this, but in this day of DVR and internet viewing, it’s almost impossible to completely miss a show you are regularly watching, therefore, i would imagine most people (definitely me) are reading recaps not for any plot info, but for enjoyment and to see what other people thought of it. so i like it when there’s some extra oomph from the recapper.

sorry for the rant. GFYs recaps are the absolute best. that’s all that needed to be said.

Speaking of bacon, Jack In The Box also had a bacon milkshake, not sure if they still sell it. The grossest part? They use a bacon flavored syrup.

Yay for TWP for bringing you together and Yay for Jennifer Lawrence managing to combine being such an amazing actress with being such a down to earth young lady- I want to be her when I grow up and I’m a decade and a half older

TWoP’s “Angel” recaps were a highlight of my week back in the day when I’d given up actually watching the series but still wanted to know what was going on. So glad you two found each other there.

Jessica and Heather and my beloved Miss Alli will forever have a place in my heart from the old TWoP days. Best recaps ever.

adding my adoration of the old TWoP recaps! Not just the XF ones (the little action figures-!!) but c’mon, the Ugly Betty recaps made my LIFE. When I realized y’all were the same Jessica and Heather I got SO EXCITED. destiny, y’all.

In the March issue of Film ink, Jennifer Lawrence talks about free clothes being one of the huge benefits of being an actress, even if they’re sometimes ugly. Apparently there’s pressure from designers to wear certain dresses on the red carpet – and if you wear some designers, you’re on the outs with others. I really enjoy her candour in interviews : hope she doesn’t get quashed by publicists.

Over a decade later, I still read TWoP, although I greatly miss the old crowd. Y’all are awesome.

Oh, the real life love lessons slide lady and I are simpatico, because I want to slap Winona Ryder in the face when she brutally rejects Laurie because a. Christian Bale is super dreamy in that movie and b. he ends up with the awful Amy because of that bioch. The fact that Jo ends up with hot older man Gabriel Byrne in the end is only a small comfort.

I need to go watch that movie again. Le sigh.

I don’t know what PeJazzling is, and I’m afraid to look frankly but I think I can figure it out. WTH is wrong with people now days??? First is was the Price Albert, albeit PeJazzling is a hell of a lot less painful but really? REALLY?

Jessica, it was because of your late season Dawson’s Creek recaps (and particularly, your love for Pacey) that I found this site. I will forever be grateful for that.
