Happy Friday! I hope you have a fun weekend planned. The Tony Awards are Sunday — so make sure you stop by Monday to see all the red carpet highlights. We’re also hosting a live chat on Drinks With Broads for paid subscribers! Because someone asked this last week, ICYMI, DWB is $5 a month, with an annual subscription of $50 a year. Paid subscribers get two newsletters per week (unless there is a holiday), all TV recaps, and live chats, plus commenting privileges and access to the archives. Thank to everyone who has subscribed! It is not an exaggeration that the newsletter (and our affiliate income) has basically kept GFY afloat this year so far, given the collapse of the ad market, and we appreciate your support so much.
Speaking of recaps, Heather’s coverage of …And Just Like That is BACK! Also at DWB, we covered the Steinfeld/Allen wedding and the new Downton trailer (among other things), and I ranked every bathroom in Italy (that I used). There was also wide-ranging coverage of whatever is happening with the Beckhams. A real soap opera!
We had a really fun chat here about everyone’s most exciting summer plans – big or small. The comments were extremely fun to read.
Over the last few years, it’s become more and more difficult to find unusual links to share here, as more and more independent blogs have ceased publication. But this is the sort of thing I’m used to be the internet to read: At Second Story, one of my favorite publications: Inside the 30-room party penthouse of Condé Nast. (The man, not the business.) If you love wallpaper, you will enjoy this. It has a delightful Wallpaper Reveal.
I also loved this piece at The Adventurine, a deep dive into the jewelry in Casino, and whether or not it’s period correct. (I always enjoy The Adventurine.)
GOD, YES: At Bon Appetit: We Need to Talk About How Dark Restaurants Are. I thought this was just because I am old. I like a cozy vibe, but I also need to be able to read the menu. Like, this is nutty to me: “At steakhouse Hemlock in Boise, Idaho, they go so far as to fight the elements with tinted windows. Instead of letting in the sun, they provide light-up magnifying cards so diners can read.” Turn on a lamp!
The generous folks at Vee Collective kindly sent me this tote and I am staring out the window waiting for DHL to deliver it to me. I can’t wait to get it. Anyway, that does not prevent me from sharing that they’re currently having a big sale — up to 50% off! I have to confess that I really was tempted by this black and white striped tote but ultimately decided the cognac one was more versatile. Still…they also have them in light blue and white stripes. (We love a striped tote.) I also really like their belt bag. Edit: My bag arrived AS I WAS TYPING THIS and it is VERY good. I really wish I’d had this bag for my vacation, honestly. It’s really nice and light and it has SO many pocketed sections inside, including mesh ones, AND it’s got a detachachable shoulder strap. (I also think they look more expensive than they are.) They’d also make a good diaper bag, or a work bag, and I just saw a woman with a navy one at the gym. News you can use, maybe?
Meanwhile, this is a very thoughtful and interesting piece about Katy Perry, at Slate. Personally, I think Katy needs a vacation, and maybe a new management team. As this piece touches on, it’s hard for a female pop star to maintain her level of popularity.
When I tell you that I’M READY: Jennifer Lopez’s Oscar campaign begins. [Lainey]
A true gift, at You’ve Got Mail: Elisa Donovan Answers My ‘Clueless’ Questions. Insert your “balls flying at my face” jokes here. (Did you know Clueless is now 30? Ugh.) I loved this bit: “I had a boyfriend in high school who was kind of like an asshole, and he was a couple years older than me. I would talk about something, and he would just be like, ‘Whatever, we’re not doing that. Whatever.’ And it was his way of brushing me off. And so, when I read the script, I was like, ‘Oh, I’m going to take back this word and I’m going to imbue it with everything I have, with every part of me.’ I think that’s why that always had a bite to it, because that was very real for me.” The whole discussion is excellent.
On the topic of anniversaries of the films of my youth, at The Squawk: Goonies never say die: Celebrating the 40th anniversary of a movie with plenty of ‘staying power.’
Speaking of stuff I ordered: The J.Crew jelly sandals I bought have arrived. We were talking about sizing last week and I am 5.5/6 and sized up to the 6, since they don’t come in half sizes. This was the right call. (And one of you wisely pointed out that my feet might swell walking around in the summer, which I think it true.) They are CUTE in person — although I’m a little worried one of my pinky toes is going to try to make an escape. We’ll see.
We were just talking about Lonesome Dove! At Texas Monthly: “The Undersung Black Cowboy Behind a Beloved ‘Lonesome Dove’ Character: Everyone who’s read Larry McMurtry’s masterpiece remembers Joshua Deets. How many people know the amazing life story of Bose Ikard?” (Is Lonesome Dove having a renaissance?)
I wish I’d read this NYT piece about 36 hours in Rome before I went to Rome! But I know several of you are off to Italy this summer, so get after it. [gifted link]
Speaking of summer travel, Rick Steves is a treasure, and this Vanity Fair interview with him is a very good — and sobering — read. To wit: “One takeaway from my travels is if a society wants to be safe—and that’s a reasonable need for an electorate—you’re not going to be safe by building walls. In the long term, you’re going to be safe by building bridges and being part of the solution in a broader way than just within your own society.”
On Instagram this week, I posted about a lab emerald eternity ring that the brand Aurate sent me but I totally forgot that they also gave us a code: 20% off with the code DWB20. (I also love these earrings.)
I love lists, as you know, and it’s the 30th (!) anniversary of InStyle’s Best Beauty Buys. This feature and Clueless are apparently the same age. And yet I too am merely 30, how does that work?
Do you just want to laugh briefly? This Reddit thread will deliver. I will say no more. I don’t want to spoil it for you.
I honestly needed to know the answer to this: Is Going to the Bathroom ‘Just in Case’ Bad for You? [NYT, gifted link]
I clicked into this story at Vulture so quickly: Secret Billionaires. Age-Gap Marriages. Plenty of Revenge. How a Chinese-backed soap-opera app is keeping L.A. actors employed.
The Ringer thinks, The Cast of ‘Survivor 50’ Is Mostly Just Confusing. I think this season might be a total shitshow, honestly. Hopefully in a good way? I need to confess that I still haven’t finished this most recent season, even though I was enjoying it. I just….sorta stopped watching it.
I always love this feature at Eater: Tracking the NYC Restaurants in ‘And Just Like That…’ Season 3
In other Interesting Stuff Brands Sent Us Recently That I Like: I am testing out this “perfecting complexion stick” from Merit and I like it A LOT (although I wish the stick could be rolled up and down like a lipstick, I am gonna mess up this applicator). I’ve been applying it under my eyes and around my nose and then blending with a beauty blender and I’m extremely happy with it so far — the coverage is good but it’s not drying. I generally do not wear a lot of makeup and it’s very…chill, which is what I generally want on my face. Anyway, we’ll keep you updated! (I just noticed it’s also on that InStyle list I linked to.)
Finally, I think we’re all here for this: Just a Few Photos of Keanu Reeves and Alexandra Grant Admiring Each Other [Pajiba]
