Happy Friday. Keep on keeping on. It’s gonna be HOT in the United States this weekend, so stay cool.
We only had one edition of Drinks With Broads this week, in which we voted on my new vintage cookbook and Heather Had Thoughts about the new Naked Gun. I also ranted about T-Mobile. Well, more specifically their new ads
There was also a fresh And Just Like That recap — and, yay! The Gilded Age is back on Sunday. I will once again be recapping. This is a paid subscriber perk and we’d love to have you join us! It’s $5 a month, $50 a year — I modestly think this is a huge steal.
Here at GFY, we recently had a rollicking chat about our favorite bras! (I accidentally wrote, our famous bras, which implies Heather and I have a new line of bras. WE DO NOT. I can imagine nothing I am less qualified to do. I mean, yes, sure, brain surgery or nuclear non-proliferation but you know what I mean.) A lot of you mentioned that you like Soma — they just emailed me that they’re having a sale at the moment.
I feel like I amplify this every year, but it’s important and useful, at Slate: Drowning Doesn’t Look Like Drowning

ABSOLUTELY relevant to our interests, at Culture Study: The Ultimate Summer Reading Post
For some random reason, I started thinking about Demeter — remember that perfume brand from the turn of the century, where the scents were like “tomato” or “dirt,” which smelled just like the item in question? They were really hot for like five years. I could not remember the name of the brand but could visualize the bottle. Anyway, to figure this out, I Googled “tomato perfume turn of the century” and came across this — very recent! — piece at Perfume Professor: A Few Juicy Thoughts on Tomato Scents, Past and Present. (Also, exciting to find a new-to-me blog.)
Loved this interview with Carla Hall at Bon Appetit, with the magazine’s EIC Jamila Robinson, about Juneteenth.
Speaking of beloved chefs, I was so so sorry — and shocked! — to hear about Anne Burrell.
Pajiba asks How Many Times Must the Rom-Com Prove Itself at the Box Office?
This is a really interesting and thoughtful piece from The Squawk about Brad Pitt’s recent fashion choices. (Not complimentary.)
What do you think about Jeremy Allen White as Bruce Springsteen?
PSA: I know a lot of you love Rothy’s — a heads-up that they’ve just introduced some new styles. I think the penny loafer is legit cute. (I think they’re sending Heather a pair, so she can report back once they get here.) (They’re also having a massive sale right now in case you’re in the market for more of their classic stuff.)
Depressing: “What’s Happening to Reading? For many people, A.I. may be bringing the age of traditional text to an end.”
Cheer yourself up with this: Ming-Na Wen and Husband Eric Michael Zee Recreate Wedding Photo 30 Years Later Wearing Same Dress and Suit.
Dr. Demento is retiring! As a kid, I loved Dr. Demento. He felt so subversive. I hope his retirement is a blast.
At the NYT: Many Older People Embrace Vaccines. Research Is Proving Them Right. This is timely as I literally just got my first shingles vaccine this morning (along with the pneumonia one). I am thrilled to have gotten it. I had actual shingles in 2019 and it SUCKED; getting the vaccine to help prevent my getting it again is one of my favorite things about being 50 so far.
This JFK Jr/Caroline Bessette miniseries looks bad. I mean, like literally it looks bad. Which is weird, because Ryan Murphy’s team NAILED The People vs. OJ Simpson AND Versace AND Babe Paley et al. Feud was a mess, but Naomi Watts looked perfect. I’m confused.
We recently got a mailer of stuff from Varley — very exciting! — and although I haven’t collected my shorts from Heather yet, her review of the items they sent was: “SOFT!!!!!” I am very tempted by their tennis dresses. Will I ever stop wanting to dress like I just finished my tennis lesson, even though I am the worst tennis player alive? I doubt it.
God bless whoever got to write this piece for Travel + Leisure: This Bora Bora Resort Has Overwater Bungalows With Plunge Pools, a Hilltop Spa, and a Private Island Available to Guests. SOUNDS MISERABLE!!!!!!! (Why are we not currently on Bora Bora in a plunge pool?)
Fun fact: Pam Anderson is apparently a very passionate gardener.
This is….amazing: ELLE Editors Try the New American Psycho Perfume. YES there is a perfume for American Psycho now. I don’t even know what to do with this information.
Bryce Dallas Howard’s Top Shelf is fun. (Though I’m mad and find it unfair that she doesn’t really have to do anything with her hair! Her hair is so nice. I am a person with constant hair jealousies.)
Thank you to the reader who sent this in: When John Hughes Wrote an Unmade ‘Jaws’ Movie.
Excuse me, but I DON’T NEED A NEW TOTE!!!!
I might make this pasta salad next week. (Dan Pelosi’s other pasta salad is my 100% go-to. I LOVE his cookbook. I can’t wait for the new one, I already ordered my signed copy from Books Are Magic.)
At last! The oral history I’ve been waiting for: Who’s Afraid Of Scary Island?
This whole headline was a surprise, every word: Scientists Are Using Drones to Unleash Thousands of Mosquitoes in Hawaii in a Bid to Save Native Birds.
Some of this eye cream is on its way to me and I will report back. I appreciate that they call it EXTREME EYE CREAM because it’s true that I don’t want like just some boring lackadaisical eye cream. Take my eye cream to the extreme.
Honestly I keep forgetting Robert Pattinson and Suki Waterhouse are married. (Or at least together — they have a bebe.)
The Cut asks, Is Food Really Better in Europe? (The kicker here is actually my theory as well.)
At last! The Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders have finally gotten that raise.
And, finally, a round-up of some new shopping codes we’ve gotten from brands lately, in case you’re feeling shoppy (I need to make a page for all our codes eventually):
- Herve Leger (!) has launched a new line of day dresses (so, not the traditional bandage dress you likely think of) and gave us a 20% off code: DWB20. Maybe you need a new dress for a wedding or another fancy event! I don’t know your life! (I also think you could wear some of these if you are a Fancy Business Lady at a Luncheon.)
- FRÉ skincare has given us a generous 25% off with the code DWB. We’re about to try out some of their sunscreen for a future post. (Our new affiliate partners at ShopMy are great because they’ve made it way easier for us to get press mailings of stuff and there is no way I’d be able to know about any of these products without them.)
- Speaking of skincare, you can take 20% off at KOBA with the code DWB20. They’ve got some great balms/skin oils. (We are also prepping a post about how dry we always are.)
