The Danish Girl got a lot of attention as an Oscar contender even as far back as when Eddie Redmayne was picking up his hardware for The Theory of Everything. And what’s interesting is that I just read the Variety review that says it’s surprisingly just as much if not more Alicia Vikander’s movie, because Redmayne perhaps plays the character a bit more from the outside in — which was exactly my issue with both his Stephen Hawking and The Theory of Everything in general (which I thought belonged, or at least should have, to Felicity Jones/Jane Hawking). Sometimes the collateral damage is just as interesting; in other words, often the people who are pulled into another person’s life end up with a journey that’s just as fascinating.
