Well Played: Kate, Wills, and George’s Royal Tour of Australia and New Zealand, Day Five

well-played

In which Kate’s yacht beats William’s yacht two races in a row. (He beat her in the boat race during the Canadian trip, so now they’re even.) They both look very CLASSICALLY them — if you were going as Kate for Halloween (and you should and then send us pictures), you could totally wear skinny jeans, a blue and white striped top, and a blazer, and you’d be bang on. He is in blue as ever, and the same belt (I think) he wore when they introduced us to George. See, William, I pay attention to you, too.

This post, in other words, is basically sunglasses and waving and sailing and thumbs up.

    YES! SUNGLASSES!! WE WINNNNN!

Kate looks cute, Wills looks cute, the men on the Yacht look cute. I love Kate’s wedges. Are those the ones she always wears? They look higher than normal and I kinda want them. Seriously. Anyone know who they are?

    • Jessica
      +10

      a) I knew you’d be excited about the glasses!

      and

      b) I sure do! They’re her Stuart Weitzman “Corkswoon” wedges and you can get them here: http://www.stuartweitzman.com/products/corkswoon/?utm_source=CJ&utm_medium=AFF&utm_content=Stuart+Weitzman+-+Product+Catalog

I think she has more than one pair of wedges, but she’s for sure worn these before.

As for the rest: the blazer is Zara (sold out), pants are ALLEGEDLY also Zara though they looked like her J Brands to me, and the top is a British brand called Me + Em and it’s ALSO almost sold out: http://www.meandem.com/collection/collection/breton-top-cobalt-/-white/products_id/1796/cPath/1153_1154_1155

Designers, especially more reasonably priced ones, must just PRAY for her to wear something of theirs. Instant sales.

I love those little pale flats she’s got on in the last pic. Bless her, it must be SUCH a relief to be able to knock about in jeans and flats for a day.

They are Sebago Bala flats. And I bought them because my girl crush Kate told me to!

Me, too! LOVE them so much! They’re super comfortable and very versatile.

            +2

I noticed the flats too! What a relief – when I saw the wedges, I thought, oh gosh is she going on the boat in those?! Of course she’s too smart for that.

      • Marnie
        +13

Oh man, I was sooooo tempted to buy that Zara blazer – it was still in my size when I checked five seconds after someone tweeted about it but then I checked again literally two minutes later and all sizes were sold out. To actually witness The Kate Effect in real time was incredible. But alas, I am holding out for the single breasted navy blazer (or something similar) that she’s worn before. Like, I really DO NOT need a double breasted nautical blazer in my daily life. I’m not competing in yacht races.

Is it weird that I’ve grown increasingly fond of them since the birth of George? I didn’t have much of an opinion at all Pre-George and I wasn’t even that invested in the birth itself. Lately though they’ve seemed like the sweetest little family on the planet that it just makes me feel all warm and happy inside. Ah.

And thank goodness we still have Kate to demonstrate how to wear properly fitted pants. Jeans that flatter are becoming such a rarity that it is so refreshing to see her in a simple pair of skinny jeans.

Sweet Jesus, I love this woman. And that first pic has increased my love ten fold. I’m sort of embarrassed by the fact that I’m in my mid-30′s and I have a TOTAL and COMPLETE crush on this woman whom I have never met, never will meet and have, like, nothing in common with (except for having a cute baby). I cannot explain why she has charmed me so deeply, but she has.

To illustrate, I shall now share what in any other circle would be a very embarrassing story to tell, but this is a safe space and if anyone will understand, the Kate fans of Fug Nation will. (I hope.)

    Ahem.

I once had a dream that she invited me to her house and gave me a barrette just because she thought it would look nice in my hair. In the dream I was trying to play it cool (“Oh, thanks, Kate!”) but I was totally freaking out b/c I thought maybe her old barrette would give me equally glorious hair. Anyway, my dream was rudely cut short due to my alarm and I woke up *touching my head where she had put the barrette*! I cannot convey the disappointment I felt once I realized there was no barrette and it was just a dream. Crushing.

I don’t know what’s more embarrassing: having the dream or being so sad that it wasn’t real.

I still remember when my sister talked about a dream where she was dating Jason Behr (Max) from Roswell and fighting over him with Liz. I had dreams about dating Spinner from Degrassi which was even weirder. I haven’t had any dreams where I’m dating any celebrities since college though.

      This is a safe space!

I once dreamt I was tire-shopping with my boyfriend Ian Ziering and he was SO NICE to me in the dream that I loved Steve Sanders from that day forward. (Never mind that obviously Steve was never the one I wanted to make out with. He is the boyfriend who will help you buy new tires!)

You wanted to make out with Dylan, right? We all did.

I attended a Q and A panel and got my picture made with Luke Perry at a Con once (when he was doing Jeremiah) and he was incredibly nice and was still SO handsome even twenty (!!) years later. He’s aged well and has such wonderful smile lines. Dylan McKay 4 EVA.

I dreamt about kate last night – possibly owing to looking at too many photos on GFY before turning the light out. My husband, baby and I were in New Zealand as will and Kate’s advance party – we had to go to their hotels (including a very nice one by the beach) and test them before the royals arrived. For what it’s worth Dream Will was very friendly…

excuse me. since when does the future queen mug for the cameras?

    • Natasha Fatale
      +9

What – she’s supposed to look po-faced for the next 20 or 30 years? Seriously?

    • Lori
      +41

She’s a young woman who, God willing, is a long way from being Queen. (Not because I don’t want her to be Queen, but because I want both the current Queen and Charles to have long lives.) Also, one of the best things about Kate and Wills is how down-to-earth and accessible they seem. It is a boon for the royal family, and you can bet it is sanctioned by the palace; if it weren’t, they wouldn’t be acting that way.

      Why so judgey?

    • LoriK
      +22

The short answer would obviously be, at least since Diana. The longer answer would be since the royals really grasped that people are no longer snowed into thinking they’re inherently better than the rest of us and so they better be at least a bit charming as well as useful or they’ll be out of a job.

    • Stefanie
      +29

Now if she wasn’t smiling you’re the person who would say “what a sour b. She should be happy she’s touring Aus on taxpayer dime. The least she could do is smile. Grumble grumble grumble. Wah wah wah.”

Pretty sure if smiling equals mugging the ENTIRE world is guilty.

      • marylou bethune
        +5

Diana used to mug a bit for the cameras. I keep thinking of her as this wonderful trip unwinds..and hope that the Cambridges will have a long and happy life.

    • Rachael
      +7

Yeah, I mean, it’s not the actual, current Queen ever has a bit of fun mugging for cameras (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/olympics/9433832/The-Queen-parachutes-into-Olympics-with-James-Bond-in-acting-debut.html) . . . so, how dare a potential future Queen. You’re kidding, right? Please?

      • Jessica
        +20

In fairness, I am also pretty sure she was mugging for William. Even the future Queen can make a face at her husband, I hope.

LMAO seriously???????? Have you SEEN Prince Charles, he’s the biggest ham in the business!!

It is entirely possible that she is enjoying herself. That is actually allowed you know. Given that she’s going to be in the role for quite some time that’s a good thing, because it’s not like she’s not going to have people waiting for a picture of her look serious so they complain she’s miserable and ungrateful or anything, is it???

WHITHER GEORGE? MUST HAVE MORE GEORGE!

In other news, I cannot believe she wore her fancy engagement ring out on the water.

    • Clairey
      +3

Omg you’re right. I would never and mine is not nearly as valuable (I’m not just referring to the price). I would be finger checking every 10 minutes after a slight panic attack when I didn’t feel the weight of it.

      • Natasha Fatale
        +5

Maybe she wears a costume jewellery version for stuff like this? Lord knows there are enough fake versions of her engagement ring available on the ‘net…

    • Brittany
      +8

I had the same thought! I’ve been stressing about mine and was worried for her. But then I recalled that she wears hers all the time (not that I can blame her). So then I just giggled over these pictures.

I love that Wills claimed his yacht was “sabotaged.” They’re so adorable.

    •  Jo
      +7

I’m firmly in the ‘We need MORE GEORGE’ club.

His parents, awesome as they seem to be, are not *really* important right now.

    • MsALVA
      +12

OMG I know! I wonder if she has a decoy to wear when she does these kinds of “active” engagements? I’m sure the Palace would have connections to a royal jeweler who could make a very convincing copy?

But I don’t blame her, if I had a ring that gorgeous, I would never ever take it off. In fact, I may or may not have perused online jewelry sites for look-alike sapphire rings to get for myself for an upcoming big anniversary.

    • Linda
      +1

I thought the same thing about wearing THE RING out on a boat. I’m sure it’s insured to the high heavens, but can you imagine wearing the engagement ring of Diana and losing it? Oh the humanity!

    • Dina
      0

I wonder if that’s not the real ring? Surely she’s got a look-alike for just such occasions.

    •  Kate (another one)
      +3

I don’t know – if your ring fits you properly, which presumably hers does, there’s very little risk.

Mine is obviously not as bling-ily fab, but I think the only time I have ever said “Self, maybe leave the ring behind, as it might get lost” was for white-water rafting on the Zambezi in Zambia.

      • Kate
        0

Good call. The ‘bezi would happily eat your ring! My husband lost his kayaking in Mexico.

We weren’t planning on going but had a ‘life is short, let’s turn this boring Friday into a lifelong memory’ moment, took our oldest daughter out of school early and headed to the marina. We were lucky enough to catch up with a friend who invited us to hang out in her family’s boat, so we had the nautical equivalent of court side seats as they headed out on the yachts, and back in again, and then a third time when they left on the sealegs boat. The sun shone, the crowd was giddy and I can confirm that she really does have magic hair – it was insanely humid and she was on a fast boat with spray going in all directions – WHERE’S THE FRIZZ!?!!

    • Peggy

OMG Kiwi. You can’t just post something like this so casually. You are actually there, and you owe it to FugNation to stay on their tails for the entire duration of the tour. I charge thee! • Linda

I wonder if she gets Coppola Keratin treatments and uses WEN. They do a lot to hold down the frizz. WEN puts so much moisture back into your hair it’s like giving humidity the finger.

I wish I could have had all of FugNation by my side, but you were with me in spirit if that helps…?

Tomorrow they’ll spend some time hanging with Richie McCaw, captain of the All Blacks (NZ’s rugby team, current world champs thankyouverymuch) Basically he’s the rugby equivalent of legends such as DiMaggio, Jordan, Seabiscuit etc… one of the all time rugby greats. Keep a lookout for him, he’s pretty easy on the eye ;)

I saw the pics come out on the Daily Mail last night (I know) and it took all of my will power to not come look until I got to work this morning. Everything about it is so cheerful! The outfits! The baseball caps! The gloating!

Also, fun fact, I did go as Kate for Halloween a couple years ago. Engagement Announcement Kate, not Casual Kate.

We bonded over Hornblower originally, but Aubrey/Maturin of huge interest as well. The classic reaction we get when we go to a nautical museum or event en masse is “but we thought you would be a group of old men! Women like this stuff too?”

I checked “Master and Commander,” the first Aubrey-Maturin novel, out of the library and wasn’t able to renew it. I spent the next three days scouring local bookstores for a used copy, and the next thing I knew, I was launched (hah!) on the series. My enthusiasm was infectious, I guess, because a coworker started on the series, seven books behind me, and was almost caught up to me by the time I finished. That’s some of the best historical fiction I’ve ever read. Highly recommended.

    I LOVE them. Two things:

    a) Do everyday stores, like Zara, know that Kate is going to wear one of their items and get a chance to stock up? Or do they just see the pictures and lose their minds?

    b) My hubby, little toddler girl and I are moving to London this Summer, just a stone’s throw from Kensington Palace.
