Well Played, Kate Middleton (She’ll Always Be Kate Middleton To Me)

well-played

Hey, remember the Royal Wedding? It was a year ago on Sunday. If you’re looking to procrastinate, may I suggest revisiting our live-blog of the ceremony (which is the most-read post on this site, ever, actually)? When you read it, please bear in mind it was THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT and we didn’t sleep at all. And yet that was one of the most fun things Heather and I have done, I think. It was an EVENT. I wore my caftan and everything (I really did). Let’s check in with Kate.

She is so awesome, but this dress is not one of my favorites. I can’t quite put my finger on it, color, trim, peplum? I like each one of those things, but all together…it’s not a 10. Probably a 8.5. Love the shoes and clutch. She really has great taste, I admit when I shop now, I think “would Kate buy this?” It has steered me away from a couple questionable choices!

Searing hatred for the color, which is of dishwater. Honestly, this could easily also be an outfit that the Queen Mum would wear. Very old-looking.

I like her style in general, but this outfit was a snooze. It fit perfectly and is extremely flattering, but it’s got such a dull color. The embellishments help, but it’s still boring.

Nah, the Queen Mum always delighted in pastel chiffon. Which one can do when one is 100 years old and marinated in gin.

Peplums work on Kate – and few other women – because she is so thin and it bulks her up. She’s certainly got the height to counterbalance any additional girth.

You are awesome..spot on about the Queen Mum..I’m want to be marinated in gin when I’m at “that certain age”, although not so sure if I can carry off the pastel chiffon.

Like the dress, hate the exposed zipper. Another trend that needs to go away.

I love this outfit and the peplum made me squeal in joy. I’m a sucker for an interesting peplum. I also love bright trim on gray, so this is perfect.

I like the dress quite a bit, but I think the trim along the armbands is too heavy.

Love the trim and the cut, hate the grey color – could be so much better.
But Kate is as lovely as ever.

Agree. Even if the dress had been navy or black the trim would have really popped…maybe yellow or pale blue?? Anything but dishwater.

It’s cute. Not the greatest dress she’s ever worn, but it’s cute. What I wonder is when they’ll finally let her change her hairstyle. Is that going to be her anniversary present from the royal PR people? I mean, her hair is very pretty, yes, but it’s beginning to feel like her hairstyle is as much part of the official protocol as her pantyhose.

How does her hair look so perfect even in the rain?!

I just LOVE her. As the mother of a college-age daughter, it delights me to see young women using taste and good judgement when they get dressed for public appearances. Something tells me that even if Royal Protocol didn’t have a hand in her decisions, they would still be great.

Her umbrella wrangler put me in mind of Prime Minister Hugh Grant’s bodyguard in Love, Actually during the visit to the dodgy end of Wandsworth. Does Kate’s umbrella wrangler have a stirring Welsh baritone, I wonder?

You know, I don’t love a peplum in general, but I LOVE it on this dress.

This is flawless, 10/10, A+, etc.

I love the trim and the cut of the dress (including the peplum, of which I am usually meh in most cases) but I’m not totally sold on the color. I wish it was more lavender like I originally thought, instead of grey. However, she looks great, so A+.

Aw, I was just thinking about the Royal Wedding yesterday and how fun it was to wake up at 3 a.m., prepare my early breakfast of homemade scones/tea/clotted cream, and watch the event while omg-ing and wtf-ing with my best friend on speaker phone. Yes it was ridiculous. Yes, it was also spectacularly wonderful :)

Ladies, I agree on the dishwater color. It’s not fabulous, but the cut of this dress and the detailing is dead on. Love it. Notice as she walked away it wasn’t hugging her ass like all of Pippa’s stuff does. Also, the “running around with fake-gun-waving dipshits” comment made me smile. :)

In that last picture, that’s actually Prince William holding the umbrella for her, a la Pacey. Adorbs.

That Wills is one lucky prince to have and hold Kate for the rest of his life.

Man, I absolutely think she is adorable and they are just the cutest couple but does anyone else ever wish they were more ‘coupley’? I’m sure it’s because they’re royals and blah blah but I wish they held hands or she held his arm..something to make us adore how normal and in love they are. They’re not royal robots!!

    • Sandra

Very often in pictures where you can see both their faces, you can see that their main focus of attention is each other. Even during the wedding, one of them would be making goo-goo eyes in the direction of the other and the lookee would feel the gaze and turn to the looker and both would just grin. They also spend a lot of time looking at each other lips in a way that makes one think that they’d rather be out behind the bicycle shed making out. Just the way newly-weds should be.

I hope like hell that woman has a portrait up in the attic, because if she that fab and still a normal human being, I’m going to expire of sheer envy.

        What Sandra said.

I think they’re also so much more affectionate with each other than Di and Charles ever were (admittedly, that’s a low bar…). I see pictures of them together, and it’s clear they’re crazy about each other. I don’t really get this excited about celeb couples (exception being Michelle Williams and Jason Segal), but I really like these two.

This is a dress you’d ordinarily see in a nursing home or on a stylish octogenarian, and yet she makes it look fun and youthful and and nice. I give the rear-only peplum a grudging pass, because her rear is excellent.

Can y’all just start a column of men holding umbrellas? I mean, Prince William will never be Josh Jackson, but still. Men Holding Umbrellas Tumblr?

Super cute idea that didn’t quite make it. The color should be removed from the colors of the universe forever. The styling is adorable but it looks a little too big (in the back especially). But over all, she is still dorbs.

I don’t love the dress trim, but the color is just off. On the other hand even in a dress I don’t quite like I find her delightful. I used to be one of those “who cares about the royal family” people, but she has won me over, I think it’s her smile. She just always seems so happy to be wherever she is.

STOP IT KATE MIDDLETON. You’re making the rest of us look bad.

Actually, nevermind. I could use the inspiration, otherwise lord only knows what might happen to my hair if I gave up all attempts at styling it.

Most of all- I love her TEETH. I mean seriously- she’s either had a TON of work done, or she just had fabulous genes. Either way- I covet.

When I’m rich and famous, I’mma have teeth like that.

This is actually one of my favourite dresses she has worn, ever. Or at least in the last few years. The colour could have been awful but the trim makes it work so.

I don’t understand all the fuss about KM. She seems a lovely girl and has nice teeth and hair and legs. Def. got all the right material for The Firm (called the Royal Family) and yes, she seems well-matched with Wills But after it’s all said and done, I find her so …… boring and safe and next-in-line-to-the-thronish. Next?

Well, that IS both her job description and her life role, so full marks to her. I bet the Windsors reckon they had quite enough excitement from the previous generation, thankyouverymuch.

Well played..I think this is lovely. REally think she could have worn nicer shoes though – they’re dowdifying the loveliness!!

sleeves – she gets to buy dresses with sleeves. So jealous. Because 99% of dresses now don’t have them. I guess they must be too expensive or something.

First of all, her heavenly hair looks like that in the rain?! JEALOUS! The dress is beautiful and it fits her perfectly! Love the jewelry-like trim & the back zipper + peplum! I wish she had worn turquoise pumps, but it’s still a FAB!

  36. Leah

TOTALLY agree about the sleeves! Why do we commoners have to go about with our sweaty armpits hanging out??

    • Paula

She also does not have to go around with her boobs hanging out. Really tired of the assumption of designers lately that I do not wear clothing to keep warm, and that I want to have everyone I meet see down my neck to my navel.

I didn’t love the front of it but the back is cool.
