Well Played, Kate Middleton PLUS PRINCE HARRY

well-played

And the Olympics/Queen’s Jubilee Year Shenanigans have truly begun, since Kate and Wills here are at some kind of Olympic Yada Yada Go England! Concert Thingie (the official title). I am, as you know, REALLY EXCITED about the Olympics, because I love the Olympics A LOT and also I am an Anglophile (among other -philes, including X-) so…you know, yay. Also: three recent events, three pairs of open-toed shoes. Things are good. But enough about that. I must inform you that this post also involves Prince Harry kissing a dog and snuggling a baby and riding a horse and being hot. HAPPY MONDAY.

I am so sad that I will never own this dress and never look as good IN this dress if I managed to raid her closet, that I can hardly look at these photos. It is so pretty. Love the color, the lace, everything.

I just adore the blue dress and the updo.
Although she is also on the lace trend, at least it is used right and it’s turquoise blue. I even like the Laura Ashley dress.
And I love the phrase “something somethin POSH and even POSHER”. I am about to move to London and I have the impression the posh comparative will be making me laugh inside all the time (thanks!).
What also makes me laugh is the truly hideous blurry photos of Prince William being all sorts of charming – he looks awful but that, I am sure, will not break the spell on most of the fug nation ladies).

I totally thought you were kidding about Prince Harry + puppies + BABY, thinking, it is not nice to tease. But lo, I looked inside and BOOM! My ovaries exploded. I should have known you’d never kid about that rapscallion and his adorable ways.

Well, I’m still utterly dreading my horrible work shift tonight, but at least now I have Harry + Babies + Puppies to reflect on when I’m about to start crying from frustration.

And that blue dress is just insanely pretty, as is Kate. They seem so cute and happy together and I find them delightful.

That picture of Harry with the dog could only be made cuter by knowing whether it’s his nephew-puppy watching him play. It looks like that puppy.

Not only is that his puppy-nephew, I believe the human baby is his cousin Peter’s little girl Savannah. I’m pretty sure that’s Autumn Phillips holding her. William and Catherine’s eventual children are gonna adore their Uncle Harry.

The dress is a custom version of a Jenny Packham wedding dress – and the purse was custom-made with it, so matchy on purpose. Maybe it was the trade-off for so much sheer and the open-toed shoes – she had to have SOMETHING really conservative.

I think the puppy is Wills and Kate’s cocker spaniel Lupo.

I cannot wait for your comments re: everything Olympics. Especially because Stella McCartney is in charge of the British uniforms. Imagine the craziness that could be soon upon us…

HARRY! PUPPIES! I’ve been living here in England all my life, why have you not come to find me yet :(

I love almost everything Kate wears, but I think this lacy blue dress might be my favorite of all of them. The color of the dress, the shoes (open toe!), her hair up – it’s just all working. She looks beautiful and summery and…ugh. If I didn’t (inexplicably) love her so much I would hate her for making it look so effortless.

  19. Prolixity

    LOVE the hair. Gorgeous.

I like the back of the dress, but doesn’t the front look ever so slighty figure skating to anyone? No? I’ll show myself out.

    • Laura
      0

I love the dress overall but it’s either a little figure-skatey or just flattening her bosom in a non-flattering way. I’d like it not to look like it’s being pulled taut down to her waist. But the colour, the lace, the fabric, it’s mostly very fab.

      • witjunkie
        0

I liked the dress better after I saw the back, but this is not one of my favorites, I must say. But the dress, with the hair, is very Princessy. In a good way.

        • Prolixity
          0

See now, I LOVED the back. It was the cap sleeves and draping of the front that gave me the ice dance vibe.

Yay you are watching Game of Thrones! The man fur is amazing (though not as sexy as Jorah Mormont in his skirt/kilt/whatever it is he’s wearing off in the Dothraki plot). But there’s a female character who is introduced in season 2 who wears some truly outrageous (but kind of amazing) things. She’s in some sort of edgy Belgian fashion show while the rest of the people in Westeros are still doing their fur thing.

    • Chasmosaur
      0

How one show has both Charles Dance and Iain Glen, I don’t know, but I thank the Seven for it. I do know we need to get Tywin and Jorah in a room and have the equivalent of a walk off where they just talk at each other with those great voices.

      • Stephanie
        0

My favorite is the man who wears the most fur – Jon Snow.

In addition to the many manly outfits and excellent accents, I find the facial hair sculpting to be superb. I’ve never seen so many men with attractive beards and staches.

        • Chasmosaur
          0

Oh, I still miss Jason Momoa. It wasn’t the physique – that man has SUCH a nice face (and the show did a great job with facial hair wrangling there).

His babies with Lisa Bonet are so very, very cute.

So glad to hear that you’re on board with Game of Thrones, Jessica. Are you watching Season 1 now? I know GFY isn’t the place for discussions about TV shows, but I’d love to hear your impressons of it from time to time. I’m pretty sure you’ll join Alice and me in our appreciation for Ser Jorah.
Just to keep this post on topic, I agree that Kate looks divine, as usual. Her life is so perfect that she might as well be living on another planet. What must that be like?

So happy you are watching Game of Thrones! I love me some fur-covered (and uncovered) HBO men :)

Jessica, HBOGo is awesome, isn’t it. I’ve been watching the new season with it, even though I watch it on Sunday nights on my TV. I re-watch it on HBOGo, just to get all those sidebars and interviews, etc. And my daughter has ordered me the boxed set of the books for Mother’s Day – they should arrive this week.
You’re gonna love the final episode of Season 1. The really good part is right at the end.

I am just dying. Oh Harry, my Harry… To quote Lea Thompson on an episode of Friends, “I think my uterus skipped a beat.”

And if Kate and Wills ever break up (and I hope they don’t; I want them to live happily ever after and have a whole brood of genetically blessed children), I call dibs on her. We will eat chocolate and drink champagne and have little fashion shows and she will teach me to make my hair look that good.

    • Amber

I actually thought of that Friends line earlier today when I saw a picture of David Beckham and Harper (the one where he’s in a suit and she’s got that little grey dress on…) And then again, with Harry and that baby. I won’t be able to handle any more cute pictures for at least a week.

I dont get the Harry thing. He dressed up as a Nazi! As a joke. The most forgiving thing anyone could say about that is that he was an ass. Ummm, what’s so sexy about an ass?

    • Laura
      0

I think the Nazi thing was at best incomprehensible English humour. They have a different attitude towards Germany– ref last season of Blackadder. :) They lived through the wars ,the Blitz, they get to appropriate it however they want.
Best thing about Harry is he’s a ginger. Otherwise– meh.

      • Sandra
        0

He was 20. The Producers was the biggest thing in the West End that season. Everyone was laughing their butts off at Nazis that winter. None of that excuses his dreadful judgement, but it isn’t like he joined the Skinhead movement afterwards. Young people, and young men in particular, sometimes do stupid things. I am entirely grateful that I came of age before the era of camera-phones and the internet. I would certainly hate to see my own immaturity splattered all over the ether.

Seven years later he’s grown into charming gentleman who, by all accounts, takes his military career seriously and is good at it. Learning from your mistakes and growing beyond them is sexy as hell. It’s why everybody loves Mr. Darcy. Add to that the facts that Harry is a very fit 6’4″, a military pilot, and good with kids and dogs and it’s not hard to see why the hearts (and other bits!) go pitter-pat.

It’s perfectly okay that you don’t find him attractive. Maybe you even find him repulsive. Also okay. But it is not incomprehensible that others would see the hot.

        • Tana
          0

I can accept that explanation for the nazi-wear (Although really let’s not pretend no British citizens were offended but just us hypersensitive Americans.), but the racist and homophobic comments were only 2 years ago. Oh, and he’s really not attractive. Even with that hairline, Will is 1000 times better looking.

Back to the subject. I really like Kate’s dress but I seriously suspect that older gentleman was looking FOR her chest, not at it. If she isn’t going to gain any weight, she should either avoid low-cut tops and dresses or have the Palace forbid cameramen from taking close-up shots when she’s wearing stuff like that.

        • Debbie
          0

@Tana – That nazi uniform party picture and attendant story was very selective in just how many people knew or were present or thought it was a lark, who were not outed and continue to only receive positive press *coughPWcough*

As for that video, while it was released or surfaced or came to light 2 years ago, was actually made 3 years prior which would put it at 5 years now, when he was larking around with his army buddies on exercise. The guy on the video was called the same by everyone in the group, and came out in support of PH when he was reprimanded in the media for it. May i suggest you find and watch a wonderful documentary on Sandhurst that shows just how tight these people become and how much they tease each other to lighten the mood whilst they are training.

I sound like a PH apologist, but i am not. He was, as is typical of many many young people at that age an idiot who drank too much, partied too much, made mistakes, all of which were never covered up in the media like they did his brother. He has since matured and grown up as has his brother. Yes there is the occasional pub crawl with his mates, but for the most part he can be found at his base or doing charity work or hanging out with his friends or family. All things that we all do.

Oh, a very fit 6’4″ indeed. He’s so cute I can hardly stand it. And the baby. And the puppy. I have to stop — he’s extremely young.

If I recall correctly, the Nazi costume landed him in a private, closed-doors meeting with his grandmummy. One hour. Of Queen Elizabeth. Taking a strip off you for dressing as a Nazi. Yeah, I think that scared him straight.

I hate to have anything in common with the skeevy chest-gazer, but… Is that back sheer, or lined? If it’s sheer, I wonder what kind of bra she’s wearing. She’s small chested, so if she were anyone else I’d just assume she’s going braless, but I can’t imagine that she’d do that – not when she can’t even go about bare-legged. (As a gal who can’t go braless for more than 30 minutes, and whose many open-backed dresses languish in the closet for that very reason, I want to know!)

    • Prolixity
      0

it seems to me that with a dress that expensive a foundation garment/support is built right in and therefore a bra is unnecessary.

    • Jessica
      0

If the dress is custom, my guess is that Jenny Packham built in a bra.

      • Jen
        0

Oh yeah, good point ladies. I guess I just need to start buying custom!! :)

        • Chasmosaur
          0

My sister and I both had custom wedding dresses (my family owned a costuming company who traditionally made the girls’ dresses – my sister’s was a from-scratch creation, as the company closed a year before my wedding, I just had a Richard Glasgow fitted by the man himself). I can assure you – they build those things in.

My husband almost couldn’t get my wedding dress off – the under-architecture was complex. Ditto for my sister’s dress – my Mom and I were the only ones who knew how to put it on and take it off.

        • Kat
          0

No need to buy it custom! Get a dress off the rack and find a good tailor. Use Yelp or Google or something to check out reviews. It’s usually not too terrible ($20-40) to have bra cups sewn in.

      • Debbie
        0

if you look at the close ups of the dress, there is a flesh coloured foundation garment. The straps can be seen through the shoulder sleeves

  29. Josephine

That blue gown is one of my favorite things I’ve ever seen her wear. It is both alluring and proper, and the detailing has a gloriously ’40s throwback feel without looking dated. Keep it up, Princess, you look smashing.

Unrelated: I’ve never been one for crushing on the princes, but I will say that I always find Harry appealingly hilarious. Don’t know why! He just looks like someone who might be about to pull some sort of terrible stunt, at all times. I feel the same way about Giovanni Ribisi.

  30. amys

I remember just about everyone but my mother chastised me for having a complicated-appearing updo at my wedding (instead of wearing my curls down). I guess now I can say I was being fashion forward. ;)

Sometimes when you have that much hair, wearing it up and well-secured is just easier and there are no pictures of you moving your hair out of your face. And that’s one thing we can say about this girl – she dresses to be secure in front of the camera from every angle.

I freaking love the teal/turquoise lace dress. And her updo! Seriously, Kate, I need to borrow this dress for a wedding in October. Call me love! I’m sure we can work it out, even though you’re half a foot taller than I am and about six sizes smaller. Anyway, I think she looks fab. Agree the bag is a little matchy, but… she’s wearing the Jimmy Choos again so I will survive. I am so glad she finally has her hair up! Love it. The lace on the back is stunning. Sexy but elegant.

Prince Harry + PUPPIES!!!!! is amazing. That picture will never get old.

Er, wait, I wasn’t done yet! The other dress I am less than thrilled about– it’s a little too Little House on the Prairie for me. I actually liked all the side view photos I saw, but straight on I think it’s too… blah or something and I really dislike it. The long sleeves and the twee print and the collar aren’t working for me, no matter how high those wedges are or how awesome and toned her legs are.

Can I just say that looking at the last three photos as if they were in chronological order is kind of hilarious: Harry, tipsy from the champagne he just drank, snuggles a baby and kisses a puppy. Looking exuberant (and yes, hot) doing both. Love it.

I adore Prince Harry….but I can’t look at him and think “HOT”….because my nephew looks SO much like him ( just leaner in build) and they’re about the same age. So all I can think is “wow he’s grown up to be such a handsome young man”…… He is absolutely dear with the baby and the dog though…. sincerely feeling joy because of both of them, it shows on his face.

I am catching up with Showtime’s “The Tudors” and a terrible thought has come to my mind. Henry VIII was a younger brother. A redhead. A famous sportsman. Fond of partying, having a good time with his pals and generally very popular. Ladies, you have been warned.

Gosh, I hate to be a voice in the wilderness, but I find that Kate is not wearing the front of that dress as well as she wears most things. It may be her minimal chest, but there is something about the construction of the bodice that bugs me. It makes her shoulders look nervous or something.

That said, I love the color, LOVE the back, LOVE the hair (oh my god, the hair… it’s the epitome of Princess! It’s fantastic!). I’m honestly not crazy about what I can see of the shoes. The other dress is probably the least inspired thing I’ve seen her in (a royal trade-off for the daring shoes, perhaps?) and I have never liked espadrilles, so that gets a thumbs down for me.

Harry, babies, puppies, all thumbs up.

Just me then. I looked at a photo of that teal dress yesterday and thought, ugh, old lady frock (note: I am an old lady so it’s all right for me to say old lady frock). OK it’s more plunging and filmy than most old ladies would choose, but still. My mother wore something similar to a wedding in 1970, though it was duck-egg blue rather than teal and had beading on the waist. Kate does look nice from the back, I like the lace. But I’ve never liked teal, except on ducks.

And Jessica, now you are on the Game of Thrones train, can you PLEASE do a slideshow on the guys? They’re endlessly handsome except maybe the guy who plays The Hound, but I suspect that’s mostly make-up. And the hair! They all have such hair. Even Peter Dinklage has excessive hair.

I sort of hated Harry after the whole “Nazi Halloween costume” debacle, but he was roundly spanked for that and I guess he’s learned his lesson. He actually seems as if he’s matured a bit (the baby and dog pics speak of a generous, voluble nature), and he certainly looks good. I guess he also hasn’t inherited the male pattern balding gene from dad – his follicles look a bit more like those of his uncle, the 9th Earl Spencer. Guess it’s the luck of the gene pool.

As for Kate – she’s perfect as always. I wonder if she snuck in those open-toed shoes? I like to think of her as a bit of a renegade. ;) And I love the Laura Ashley dress, but then again that is my generation’s metier.

I read “Prince Harry kissing a dog and SMUGGLING a baby” — which gave me cause for momentary alarm. But all is right with the world!

BTW, I know there have often been comments about Duchess Catherine’s always-flowing locks; i.e., that she rarely employs a different style. Recently I thumbed through People magazine’s commemorative first-anniversary issue of the young royals, and there was a lot more variety in her hairstyles than I would have expected given the images that have been featured in this blog. It might surprise some of GFY’s other readers, too!

Prince Harry is hot. I don’t really admire him, yet, as person, but he’s hot. I don’t say that about many guys these days, as I’m 62 and not much interested in hotness. But Harry is hot. William is pretty hot himself, and Kate knows it, but she knows Harry is hot too, and it’s OK.
