Ooh, spiky heels and cobblestones don’t mix well. Be careful of your ankles, Kate.
Right – I was thinking the same thing; she really needed a chunkier heel.
I have a feeling she’s probably mastered that skill over the past year or so, actually. Though I do fear for her.
Itʻs beautiful, but I find the length a touch awkward.
Agreed. I think the jacket needed to be a couple of inches longer. This makes it look like the jacket is too tight in the shoulders or something. Just a bit wonky.
I’m kind of getting bored with her looking so freaking good all the time. I sort of want her to look just a little crazy. Just once.
Her hair got a little frizzy on her Asian trip. Sadly, I think that is the most “rumpled” you will ever see her.
Well, she did look naked for a while.
Hee! I really wish I was able to upvote this!
It’s completely unexplainable to me, even by me, but I love seeing these two together, and I am almost too invested in their happiness. I’m not a fan of monarchies, in general, but I am a fan of these two. I think it makes me believe that there is happiness to be found when you find another who is a friend and enjoys your company. These two clearly enjoy being with each other.
He has such a great smile in that last picture–totally natural. I don’t usually consider him cute, particularly–but he really is here.
Kate Middleton always reminds me of a mouse…
I love the suit and of course she looks great..as always! I do have to say I’d like to see her go outside the box with her hair a little. Up? Half up? Pony tail? NAUGHTY TEACHER BUN? You know, just punch it up a little.
Yes please! Bangs, a killer blowout, a chic chignon. Give me something else, lovely lady.
Why aren’t you ladies asserting that HRH Kate is the most boring dresser ever. It’s never bad, never great – her body is basically athletic and boyish so she can wear anything but even that is boring – and they might as well just have taken the old queen mum’s wardrobe and tailored it down to teenage sylph size. Otherwise she reminds me of stuck up girls with curled and set hair (in their mother’s Liz Claiborne dresses) who I had to sit next to at Temple on the high holidays and at the after service Jewish youth get togethers. Parents liked those girls and said they were sweet and would do well, but they were bitches.
Because I don’t think she is the most boring dresser ever. I think she looks great. Everyone is operating within their own situation. She CAN NOT go out looking like Swinton, and SWINTON would look boring dressed like this. I like how she dresses, but she is also required to look a little conservative.
Okay, I hear that. I accept. But, what’s with the two of them and the crotch block poses. Suspicious.
This young woman has to walk a very narrow line. She is married to the heir presumptive, and most likely will be the mother to a future monarch of England.
So she is dressing for her profession. ALL the time, considering the paparazzi presence. (Something she sadly learned – even in the middle of nowhere on the roof of a villa, she is being photographed.) She needs to look her 30-something age, but not tarty. She needs to look ladylike, but not frumpy. She needs to look professional, but still be able to sit down with a group of kids or pensioners. In group occasions, she has to dress so she is not the center of attention (such as the Jubilee – her red dress that blended into the red background so the Queen in her white stood out was quite adept).
This is not a Hollywood starlet, who can take fashion risks. She is the emblem of a nation, and part of a tradition that is 1,000 years old. So while her fashion may not turn heads, she is walking a delicate sartorial line and doing it nearly flawlessly. I am sure, left to her own devices, she might like to take more risks, since she seems to enjoy clothes. But she cannot, without inviting even more scrutiny. I think her life is scrutinized enough.
The thing is, her public appearances are essentially her job. So when she goes out anywhere, she’s in “work wear.” She has a dress code to meet just like the rest of us do at work. Her wardrobe is SUPPOSED to be neat and non-controversial.
I’m a fan of these two, but, I, too, think she usually looks a bit boring (though her long coats can be pretty awesome, and I did really like her wedding dress). She has some very good stuff from time to time, but in general, I think she’s more boring than she has to be (yes, even knowing that she is a royal and whatnot and has to dress accordingly.)
Also, I would be more forgiving of her boringness if she’d change up the hair a bit. I think it’s gone a little too ringlet curls on the bottom lately. Looks heavy.
Oddly, I particularly dislike this suit. The color is a little 1990′s cranberry, and I don’t really love the cut. Also not a huge fan of the tights… But hey, her stuff is always impeccably tailored and situation appropriate, so that’s a win = )
I usually am 100+ % on board with her outfits, and I love that she looks classic and classy all the time. This one is leaving me with a “meh” feeling though. The top and bottom don’t jive together for some reason. The coat is too structured while the skirt is too flippy? I will give her the colour though, it’s beautiful.
Agreed. I think a pencil skirt or a more classic a-line shape would have worked better.
I love the juxtaposition of the three ladies in the “Hot Right Now” scrollbar at the top vs. burgundy Kate. Giant gray YSL hat lady, bespectacled mess Christina and Dior yellow dress. They make the Duchess look amazingly normal.
The beautiful color of the suit brings out the red in her beautiful hair. Those two make me happy.
like that he matched his tie to her suit.
The color is awesome! This really is a cute outfit, well done.
And damn her for the millionth time for that hair! Bouncy, shiny….
Eh, this isn’t great. The proportions are off and the shoes are completely and utterly wrong for the suit. She is prevented by her situation from ever dressing in an exciting or fashion forward way, which precludes her from being interesting.
very very sweet all around with the exception of the black tights. i really hate the black tights. isn’t there something we can do about it?
I’m with you Liz. I’m not a fan of black tights, 99% of the time they look too heavy for the rest of the outfit. I’ll be so glad when this fad ends. I love the colour of her suit though, it is gorgeous, just like her hair. sigh.
+2 on the black tights…
The suit is OK. I would have gone with subtly-patterned dark tights and mary janes with a chunky heel. But maybe that’s not scholarly enough?
I like the color and the skirt and the jacket– but not together. The cut of the skirt doesn’t mesh with the cut of the jacket and so the overall I feeling I get from this is meh. I also wish she would do something else with her hair– it’s gorgeous and shiny and wonderful, but I also feel like it’s overshadowing her. She needs to start pulling it back more, even if it’s only half up/half down.
The last picture is so adorable, though! I love these two together!
She should have worn boots, but look how William’s tie nearly matches her suit!
I don’t like the tights and the shoes with the suit. Or the tights and the shoes with each other…they blend a little too well.
I love everything about this and wish I were wearing it in my office right now. Including her insanely gorgeous hair.
And I try not to invest a drop of emotional energy in the love lives of famous people — but these two just look like they enjoy being together so much. It makes my stone cold heart warm a few degrees.
That’s a really cute suit on Kate and I would love to wear it. And I know Wills gets a lot of guff for not being the “hawt” brother but I think he’s good looking AND wears a suit really well. They’re a cute couple, both wearing what their roles demand they wear. Can you imagine if she stepped out in a silver lame disco dress with high heeled boots and he wore, I don’t know, an American football jersey and some faded jeans with a backwards ball cap? People would tear their hair out.
. . .and speaking of the “hawt” brother, have you seen the Tatler mag with Prince Harry on the cover??? Seriously, be drinking something cold before you click on this: http://i.huffpost.com/gen/804401/thumbs/o-PRINCE-HARRY-TATLER-570.jpg?12
Oh my God YES. There are so many photos of him looking delicious, but this has to be one of the top 5. It’s not right how hot he is.
He’s never really done it for me except in that “rapscallion” kind of way, but dayum – i felt a few tinglies when i clicked on this. YES PLEASE! I will take that, a glass of water! to my room.
Wills had a long time of being the hot brother though.
Personally, I still think he’s the hot brother. Yeah he’s balding, but he looks nice in a suit or polo outfits, and I like his face = )
I find Harry to be the “cute” brother. Both quite datable if spotted in a bar, haha.
You must be doing something right when the most people can come up with is, “ooh, the line of that skirt isn’t quite right with that jacket” or “the shoes aren’t really very interesting” or “why doesn’t she do something different with her hair?” All of those acknowledge that she is dressed appropriately and in a becoming style. She and William were there to honor winners of scholarships, including some endowed in memory of his mother and great-grandmother. This is perfect for a law-school awards ceremony.
What I want to know is how she escapes the Tyranny of the Hat. She does wear them sometimes, but not as much as I would have expected. Is this a trend among royal ladies or does it depend on the event, or does she just say “look here; I’ll wear the tights but I will not put that thing on my head” ?
Hats aren’t essential for royals; it depends on the event and on their personal preference. Hats will probably always be required at more formal events and (probably) religious services, but otherwise they’re personal preference. The Queen is from a generation of women who wouldn’t dream of going out without a hat, royal or not, or even a headscarf if she’s just walking the corgis in one of her parks. You rarely see Princess Anne wear a hat unless she’s at a very formal event. Diana and the Duchess of York didn’t always wear them either.
The hat issue is definitely generational and seems to be true for all European royal houses. Personally, I miss the hats.
The fashion magazines say that that deep “oxblood” red is going to be huge for fall/winter this year.
Nice to know it looks good on somebody, because it makes my pale self look sickly.
I hope so; I can’t wait to wear it. I love that color!
Oddly, it’s the ONLY shade of red I can wear. Any other red shade does something horrible to my skin, fighting with the yellow undertones and conspiring with the pink undertones in a mutiny. So I love this color and have a sweater this color that I wear obsessively in the fall and winter.
pantsonfire, it sounds like we have the same coloring and this is the best description I’ve ever read of it. Lol and shudder!
Man, they just look like they like each other and have so much fun together, no matter what they’re doing. It’s hard not to like them. Also, love the color.
I hate it! Hate the colour – and the rest of it.
My love for K&W is deep and wide, but not in this suit. It’s too young for who she is – very juevenile cut, awkward length, and the black tights take it strait to Girls School. Usually Kate is spot on for who she is and what she represents. But not with this suit.
I actually really dislike this outfit and I tend to agree that it looks like she’s tried to jazz up a school uniform.
and my spell checker is not working. juvenile. straight.
I have to wear suits a lot in my profession, so I’m sort of a suit stickler. And I must say, this one does not make the grade. I do love the fabric (both color and texture) and I do love the kickiness of skirt, but the jacket is off. The shoulders are too boxy for the slightly short cut of the jacket, throwing the proportions off. Plus, Kate does have square shoulders and a narrow waist and hips, so the boxy shoulders is compounding that. I almost think a lapel-less jacket would have been better…something Chanel-y maybe, but who knows. I’m not so good at envisioning what would work; my strength lies in nitpicking things to death. Haha.
I sometimes think she could wear the proverbial burlap sack and I would like her because she seems so confident, delighted to be with her husband, and just downright enthusiastic and happy. I love almost everything she wears with my own enthusiastic happiness. She is delightful. And yes, the beauty of her hair makes me want to sob in a corner about my own…
While she looks great the second photo makes her look a bit bobble-headed. She doesn’t come across that in other photos, so might be the angle.
Its nice. But… Not best ever. Not better than the white McQueen coat at the 2011 trooping the colour and 2012 order of the garter (garter hat and dress better). I don’t even like white and that was, is an AMAZING look.
I’m with you on that. Nice, but not best ever. She’s had so many big hits – like even the red McQueen for the jubilee and two fantastic full length dresses she wore in a week once, etc, etc That white McQueen jacket is still one of my most covetted pieces.
She can even make horizontal lines look good.
The skirt is too short and has funny tiers on it. The jacket is too loose and those black tights with black suede pumps are so 90s. It’s the kind of outfit she would have worn on her school pictures back in the days.
And she needs to tie her hair back.
Saying that colour is lovely and would have really stood out with sheer tights.
I like it, but it’s not my favorite thing she’s ever worn! And, damn it, her hair is sooooo shiny!!! COVET!
Not loving this at all!
hmmm….interesting. I am not a huge fan of the Royal Family, but I did feel quite bad for Kate when the nude pictures and video of her came out. She had been getting quite good press up until that point, and you can’t help thinking that it will damage her image in the long run. I saw the video at http://celebrityshocks.com/
You girls only ever applaud the dullest, most predictable outfits, you laugh at anyone who dares break from the norm. Kate Middleton is a dull dresser and makes fashion seem like work rather than something fun.
You are allowed to disagree with me, but please do it civilly. Perhaps we have different tastes, but I would prefer if the comments would focus on what you think of her outfit — like it or not — rather than on my taste.
I have an honest question, one that I’ve been struggling with lately. How is Jackie’s criticism of your taste not acceptable, but your website is largely based on criticizing the taste of celebrities?
I agree with Maum! A fail in my book- old fash, bad tights.
I love the Double Crotch Pose. Do they practice it? Will it turn up in yoga studios in LA oand NY soon? Alternatively, it looks sort of like they’re hiding something… Very cute. I’m sort of into them. Though I wish she’d eat some pasta.
