People’s Choice Awards Fug Carpet: Olivia Munn

When Olivia Munn got cast on New Girl, I thought to myself, “ugh. Now I am going to end up liking Olivia Munn.” The good news is, that totally hasn’t happened — I feel like her character is kind of a non-starter, and definitely nowhere near as amusing to me as, say, Lizzy Caplan was. In fairness, though, her haircut on the show is really cute.

But this dress. Oy.

From the waist up: cute. From the waist down: excuse me, but your doily factory just exploded.

If that dress was chopped off at her fingertips, I’d LOVE it.

    • Helen

Or even just take off the bottom flounce, for me.

But in August. This is a summer dress.

Actually, I’d say waist-down is okay. A bit doily-esque, yes, but not too terrible.

The top, though, is completely shapeless and commits fashion crimes against her boobṡ. The potato-sack with a central stripe that’s masquerading as a blouse is just not flattering. The bottom may be a bit lacy-twee, but at least it’s not deforming her like that top.

If you chopped off the bottom two layers/ruffles, it has some potential.

    • TonyG

Agreed. Also, once you chop off those lower two layers/ruffles, make the lower portion of the skirt all white, with one black thin stripe at the hem line.

I don’t hate it but I’m not sure if the top half goes with the bottom. It would look better with the bottom ruffle layer removed. The next ruffle should match the section above it and not really be a ruffle. But if you removed it too, the dress would be too short in my opinion.

I was glad she went on New Girl, because I wanted to see why everyone is bugged by her. I still don’t see why…other than I’m not buying her being as kookoo for cocopuffs as her character is supposed to be. She is so pretty, though.

    The dress is nuts.

You can’t really see it in this picture, but on TV I thought her eye makeup looked weird. Like it had a red tinge to it, in kind of a zombie plague way. She can and has looked more attractive.

    • kat

yes, seriously second this – my husband and I were watching and we were like ‘wtf is going on with her face???’ her eye makeup was really weird and her nose looked it had dirt all around it – I think someone overshaded.
I do like the top half…as a blouse.

She was in Vanity Fair … last month? two months ago? … and I couldn’t believe how glamorous she was. She really needs to get a stylist.

  8. KO33

I actually love it as is. If I looked as good as she does in it, it would totally be one of my go-to pieces. Also is it a dress, or a skirt and top?

  9. hdew

I feel like “doily factory” could be used as a euphemism for vagina. I’m not sure why, though.

I know what you mean about Olivia: one cannot decide whether she is smart and sassy and therefore irritating to the male HOllywood establishment or if she is just annoying. She is very pretty and her hair looks great all the time. I think the dress works on her – it’s different.

I like her, she kind of high-jacked Taylor Swift’s acceptance of The Most Boyfriends or something. So that is endearing to me.

    • Sandra

Taylor Swift is very annoying, but I thought Olivia’s antics were kinda douchey. TS won that round with her response.

  12. Emma

I don’t love her character on New Girl either. I’m glad I’m not alone. I don’t buy that Nick would go for her, and she makes him behave in ways that don’t make sense for his character.

  13. Sajorina

Yeah, like the top, hate the bottom!

  14. fritanga

She is so awful on New Girl – just another annoying place-holder until the writers can figure out a way to bring Jess and Nick together without boring the hell out of everyone with its extreme predictability. Bleh. And her dress is horrid, which sort of makes me happy.

  15. Jules

For some reason this dress reminds me of a question in a college math class that I will never, ever figure out.

  16. Mongerel

I like the ruffles around the bottom. To fix this, I would remove the top two bands of lace on the skirt to focus attention on the ruffles, and add a belt to fix create a defined waist. And replace the toe-torturing shoes. Truly, nothing brings down a look more than screaming toes.

IS it a dress? Or is it a sort-of-matchy-but-not-really blouse and skirt? Either way, I don’t like it.

I have mixed emotions about Olivia Munn, herself. I mean, she’s very pretty and sexy, but I think she’s been shoved at us as pretty and sexy but with not a lot of notable work to really back it up for years. I mean, people who do guest shots on TV shows and work as correspondents for basic cable news-ish shows don’t usually get this kind of media saturation. She’s teetering on the edge of being famous for being famous- which I’ve seen more than enough of, thank you! On the other hand, I thought she was good in “Magic Mike” and even though I didn’t like her character on “New Girl,” I thought she did well with the part. I don’t think we were supposed to like Angie or believe that she and Nick made any sort of sense, at all.

I think I want to like her, but I wish that she’d done notable work and then become famous, not the other way around.

  18. Lily1214

She probably ran this up at home.

  20. Esme

She should have run it up the flag pole first and when no one saluted (which no one would), she should have trashed it!

  21. Brook

I typically find her blah on shows and grating in articles/interviews, but her sartorial awfulness is starting to make me feel bad for her. I feel conflicted and I do not like.
