Oscars Well Played: Shailene Woodley

well-played

When I heard that Shailene was wearing white, I believe I tweeted something along the lines of, “BORED NOW.” However! As anyone who reads us knows, I am completely fickle and this is no exception. I totally dig this:

I don’t know, there’s just something so refreshing about how modest and 60s it is, and yet there is nary an air of Sister Wife about it — which is hard when something’s so covered up. This dress makes Shailene Woodley — who is very good in The Descendents, and very bad on Secret Life — seem like a tremendously interesting person. She looks like someone who goes to Palm Springs to look at the cave paintings and has a house with a Warhol in the bathroom and has people over for cocktails on her deck, which are all made from weird herbs she grows on the thatching on her roof (she did tell Ryan she’s becoming an herbalist) and she’s always dating someone who doesn’t speak English and her parents have an entailed estate that they never talk about. Almost none of those things are actually true! The power of a dress.

I disagree. She looks like a Star Trek schoolmarm.

While I love the dress, I don’t think it’s right for her. A dress that can tell that many stories shouldn’t be on someone so young. This is something GOOP could pull off, not a 20 year old.

    • Chasmosaur
      0

Yeah. If these two had to wear clingy white, they should have swapped. Though sans cape for Shailene – she doesn’t have enough GOOP to carry it off.

I think this looks better in photos than it did on TV, but I spy panty lines…

  4. Lindy

You know what? This dress is lady-like and elegant, which is something most starlets seem to not want to be anymore. I love it on her and like her for choosing it. And, yes, she WAS so good in The Descendants.

  5. Feena
    0

I adore this. My best dressed. And they should’ve nominated her for The Descendants, she was awesome in that. This is what Streep should’ve worn in the 70′s. Imagine all that flowing blonde hair with this….

My exact words when I saw this: Winter wedding on the prairie.

I think this would’ve worked for her if it had been sleeveless, maybe? OR with sleeves on someone older. I do not like. DO NOT. Though I like that she was so happy to be wearing it.

I’m so relieved! I loved this, and GOOP’s cape. Thank you for validating my love of the odd white dresses!

I was dismayed by this dress last night and I’m even more dismayed in the clear, sober light of day. It’s so inappropriate for someone her age. It’s so inappropriate for 2012. It’s so… macrame.

It looks like the curtains in my nana’s powder room – with the little fringe balls – or an afghan. it’s heavy looking and it making me sweat just looking at her.

That said – it at least fits her and she’s covered up which to Lindy’s point, is quite a change.

When this is all said and done, this might get my vote for WORST dress of the night. Absolutely awful. Everything about it. I might honestly never have disagreed more with a well-played vote. But hey, you can’t always be right:)

  11. Ariel

This dress is terrible, especially because it’s on her and she’s so young and fresh and adorable. The Oscars are supposed to be the culmination of the entire buildup of months of award shows, and she went with this?! This is so not glam. I see this working only on the Sev on a lower profile red carpet, MAYBE.

  12. Stefanie

I like it! It reminds me (in a good way) of my moms prom dress she wore in 1979 – all white and buttony. Good stuff.

I LOVED this. It’s sexy in a 70′s key party kind of way.

    • Elissa
      0

I love it too. I echo the sexy 70′s vibe. But in a way, it’s also much more modern than anything else last night. She looks great.

  14. Stefanie

Oh and, can you see under boob in that? Is that chest lined? Cause Im thinking it’s not. Take that ABC Family!

  15. Daffodil

See, I am not in love with this. The detailing looks too much like she’s the practice areas at a Wilton cake decorating class. It’s like someone got her on a cake turntable Sunday afternoon and went to town with a frosting bag and a #8 tip.

That is exactly what I thought…who was standing there with a piping bag and said, ohh this dress is too revealing – let’s just cover some of that up.

My aunt actually did that once (though not with frosting) , she thought the Dallas Cowboy cheerleader poster she bought for my brother was too revealing, so she inked in the more risqué areas with permanent marker. I couldn’t stop thinking about this story when I saw this dress.

  16. Deborah

This dress reminds me of Barbra Parkins circa Valley of The Dolls…which is great, if that’s what look Shailene was going for. The detailing is lovely, but I can’t help feeling that the waistline should have been more fitted.

I wish she had just gone right ahead and owned it and done big hair and big earrings if she was going for late 60′s mod hostess gown. Her hair and makeup and jewelry is too restrained.

  17. Jen S 2.0
    0

Meh at best. She has the rest of her life to wear Lanz nightgowns to formal events. At this one, she could have picked something that showed her off. A lot. While I absolutely appreciate that this is interesting and modest and different and not tacky or attention-grabbing, I don’t like the dress on its merits, and then it’s just 40 years too old for her.

  18. strah

This dress looks like it’s made out of thick, 70′s style polyester. It also reminds me of the musty smell of thrift stores where I’ve seen similar dresses.

  19. Irina

I think that with different sleeves this might have worked, with them however… she looks like she raided her grandma’s closet. Hate.

  20. Anj
    0

The bottom half is all right, but the top half is plain fug. Either way, I felt this didn’t seem right for the occasion. She’s worn far nicer things this year for far less formal events. It’s like wearing a couture gown to the engagement party and then a Herve Leger dress to the wedding. In short, this makes me confused and it looks blaaah.

  21. rene

She looked great. I thought: ‘Finally her boobs are in the right place!’ And it’s interesting choice of dress… well done.

Bleh. This is Jackie O (not Jackie Kennedy) and thereby too old for her.

LOVE!!!!!! This dress is AMAZING and she’s doing it justice! It reminds me of the dresses my mom used to wear in the 60s that she gave away to charity and didn’t keep for me to wear as vintage one day… I hate her! Anyway, I love Shailene in this… She picked the right dress, which fits her beautifully, with the right hairdo, makeup and jewelry for the right awards show! My mom would have worn this with like Peridot 14k Yellow Gold Chandelier Earrings, but that’s not Shailene and it’s not the 60s anymore! FAB & BRAVO!!!

  25. Dani
    0

This was TERRIBLE! If it had fit her it might habe been better but I spent the whole time looking at the fact that you could see every outline of her stomach on the red carpet. She is a tiny waisted girl and this thing made her look like she had a gut. No Oscar dress should do that!

  26. Molly
    0

I am SHOCKED that this mess got a Well Played. Shocked. This dress is WAY too old for her. And it looks musty. And heavy. And dowdy. It looks like she found it in her grandma’s attic. And that line of poofballs down the front is all wonky. Blech.

did it make anyone else think of that horrible wedding dress on Sandra Bullock in the Proposal…

    • Kara

Preach. She’s young and has an amazing body, and this is waaaaaaaaaay too old and matronly on her. Top 5 worst dresses, for me. In fact, if someone 40 years older had worn it, I’d still give it the thumbs down.

    • Kathleen F.

Yeah, you can almost literally see her being weighed down by the heaviness of it.

Reading the comments on this one was interesting. So divisive!

…and I find I am somewhere in the middle. When I first saw it on tv I thought “Oh honey, no!”, but its definitely grown on me. Not so much because I love it, but more because she does indeed look beautiful,it fits, and I think this is the last thing any of us expected her to show up in.
    Way to go Shailene!

  28. Willow

I love this on her! And I like the backstory, too!

  29. Bella

I like it. Refreshing to see a young girl who doesn’t feel everything must be hanging out. But what is the material? I thought this looked vintage.

  30. Eileen
    0

This looks like it was made out of the worst of the 70s double-knit polyester: unforgiving and nearly indestructable, which is sad as this dress should be destroyed. Remember how happy everyone was when Hailee Steinfeld came to the Oscars for True Grit and wore such a beautiful AND age-appropriate dress? Shailene should have studied that. This is too old looking and too school-marmish for her. She could have looked lovely and demure without the 70s armor.

  31. Wordphreak

    Wait — she’s how old? And she’s wearing a 60-year-old’s dress?

I personally like this dress (I am also 20 years older than her), wish it had 3/4 sleeves, but don’t love it on her. I think it is definitely wearing her, not the other way around. I think on goop or Cate Blanchett this would have been loads of fun. Even Diane Kruger.

  35. Katharine
    0

No. It looks like a blanket, seems a hair too tight in the skirt, and I’m not feeling anything “modest” about a front which is peekabooing her whole chestal region, plus, I swear, giving me a hint of nip in the full picture closeup.

  36. ceecee
    0

I like it. It’s glamorous and formal for a glamorous and formal occasion, and the structural details make it visually interesting. Are we really so resigned to 20-somethings showing up nearly naked that when we see one dressed like a grown woman we think she looks dowdy?
This is how you do white. GOOP’s dress was boring (except for the cape and that was weird).

  37. Jen
    0

Sadly, madly, I agree with ALL the comments made thus far! I think I noted in an earlier (Gwyneth maybe?) post today that I think this dress ages her… but she does look great… but it’s not great…. wow,I don’t know. Let’s look at her after-party dress instead, where I think she actually looks 20 and not like she’s time-travelled to the 60s. It IS so much better than she looks on the ABC show. Shailene for the win. Somehow.

That said or mumbled, I DID love when she told Ryan that this (the Oscars, etc) was “one part” of her life and that she had other things in her life that she enjoyed. THANK YOU for having some perspective!

  38. Jen

  40. Kris M

She was so cute in her red carpet interview and when she talked about her dress, I thought she said it best: It’s classy and simple. Just because she’s 20 doesn’t mean she has to be partially nude.

    • Kelly O
      0

I totally agree with you. It was so nice to see a girl choose a simple dress that does not have her all-together hanging out anywhere. She seems to have a really healthy perspective on the whole “I’m in a movie with George Clooney and here at the Oscars” thing.

I appreciate she chose a dress she felt comfortable in – no odd stances or worries about how you’re being filmed or getting in and out of limos. Her hair and makeup were pretty and age-appropriate. I thought she looked lovely, and yeah, the fabric is a little 70′s, but there are way worse things we saw last night (I am looking at YOU Rooney Mara and Angelina.)

  41. Halo

I hated this. It’s very Star Trek, as was Jennifer Lopez’s dress. The only alien life form costume I liked was Gwyneth’s. Is this a thing now?

  42. Elin

This dress has grown on me, but I think it would have been cuter with cap sleeves. That would probably have solved some of the weird shoulder seam bunching issues, too.

  43. mepe

I really like this dress…looks like something Kate Middleton might wear (but fully covered in the chestal region of course) or maybe Rachel Zoe. I’m not sure I love it for the Oscars but it’s cool that she’s keeping to her own style and not getting all spangled up if that’s not really her.

  44. barbarena

this is a really croovie (cool + groovie) dress, very courreges…I can salma h. in this, in a knee-length version

  45. Julie Chase

I still hate it. It ages her and it’s not interesting enough for me to forgive that.

  46. casey
    0

My issue with this is more about the styling than the dress – I’m not sure she has enough whatever-it-is to carry this off, but I know for sure she can’t carry it off with the hair and makeup she’s wearing here.

  47. Miranda
    0

I guess I’m sorta meh on the dress, but I am seriously amazed that she didn’t get her hair and makeup together for the Oscars. THE OSCARS. HIRE SOMEBODY.

  48. rosasharn

I like this; as the other supporters say, it’s different and classy. The only thing I think it needs is big emerald earrings.

  49. Katie

Are you FUGGING kidding me? This gets a “Well Played”? This? I’m terrified.

  50. Bea
    0

I’m surprised this gets a “Well played” too. It’s like a weird mixed between a curtain and a bedspread. I like the sleeves and I could have liked the top is the waist area/bottom was better. As it is, it really doesn’t work for me and although it fits her very well I don’t think it suits her.

  51. liaso
    0

I also think this dress just does not work on her. It’s far too “old” for her.

  52. Nina
    0

That material looks really warm. Like if she’s sitting underneath the AC vents, she won’t freeze. Maybe that’s why she wore it.

There’s a happy medium between dressing slutty and dressing dowdy. This ain’t it. It’s not even a conservative look, just old, especially coupled with the nearly nude makeup and simple hairstyle that SW was sporting.
The dress itself isn’t awful. The simple detailing and cream color could have worked in someone else’s favor. If the dress had been backless, or a shorter hem, it would have made a huge difference on Shailene.

  53. roser

    Awful. Awful. Awful.

  54. Alice

Nice dress, but totally inappropriate for her – not just because of her age, but her personality too. Not to mention that it totally hides her beautiful skin and body. The dress would also look better with longer cuffs and without the line of bubbles up the front.

  55. essex

One of the best of the night and one of the best plays I’ve seen at any awards shows ever. Plus she looked comfortable and confident. All around fantastic showing.

It looks like she is wearing Fondant, by Cake Boss.

  57. AK

Ugh, watching her live, that fabric is so awkwardly stiff and thick. Maybe it would be okay (a big maybe) if a fabric that was meant to be worn by humans.

  58. vandalfan

Yet this is totally Youngest Sister Bride to me. Girlfriends needs something fluffier to suit her youth. Not hoochie-exposing minis (I’m talking to YOU KStew; also thank the Lord THAT crowd wasn’t at the Oscars), but go with tulle and ruffles while you can.

  59. Crysh
    0

I respectfully disagree. I want the runway on her chest to light-up. She needs on one of those huge 60s straw hats. In fact, it reminds me, a bit, of the dress my grandmother wore to my parents’ wedding. UGH.

  60. Maggie
    0

This dress is the worst. Color, fit, styling, material, all of it– awful. I don’t think even SWINTON could have pulled this off.

  61. Shannon

This was my pick for WORST dress of the night. I hate it so much that I am personally offended by it. I wrote on my Facebook that it looks like it was originally featured in the 1973 Sears bridal catalog, and I stand by that. This is TOTALLY sister wife material. It’s beyond ugly. There is not a single thing redeemable about it. I wish I could burn it and all of its copies so that no one, anywhere, will ever be able to wear it again. Fugly, fugly, fugly!!!!!!!!

  62. Fiona

There was a kind of knit dress brand which was huge with my aunts in the ’70s (it had a kind of twee name and was the maker was based here in LA) and this dress looks like a long version of one of those dresses. In other words, OK on my 30ish-40ish aunts then, terrible on a 20-year-old actress in 2012.

If she was trying to look older to impress any producers she might fall over at this event, she should have taken a page from Jennifer Lawrence last year and done va-va-voom simple-but-smashing beachy instead of old 70′s auntie.

  71. Lilibet

Yes. She makes it work! as Tim Gunn would say.

  72. Tessie Bee
    0

It is just so all encompassing! Long sleeves, long skirt… long long long.

Maybe keep the sleeves but with a nice fitted knee length skirt and get rid of the weddingcake accoutrements. That cutout top is gorgeous all on its own.

Or sleeveless with the long skirt, that would be good too. At the moment it just swamps her

  73. oohsparkley!
    0

I like it and I like it on her. It looks chic and comfortable. Trying to bring back sleeves. Whenever I see formal dresses I always think I’d freeze. I could get behind the big hair and big earrings too.

  74. Rachelh
    0

I love that she did something different, without it being “Look at me! I’m doing something DIFFERENT!!!” (the only one allowed to do that would be Cher). I also think it is very stylish, and flattering, if a bit too modest.

I honestly think the big problem is her hair. If she had gone with a sophisticated, Tom Ford-esque nod to the early 70′s hairdo, it would have pulled the whole thing together. As it is, the hair looks dowdy and after thoughty, blowing the whole thing. So, the dress is great, the styling,… not so much.

  75. Anna Maria Cárcamo

As someone who has loved Princess Leia for YEARS… yeah, love this dress. I can get why people think it is too old her, but I don’t know– I love it! It’s pretty and I like that she’s not Boobs Legsly.

My only complaint is the waistband– it looks too wide to me. I think something slightly narrow to really accentuate her tiny waist would have been better.

Sister Woodley is wearing a perfectly modest temple dress. At any moment now a hand is going to reach through the veil and welcome her into eternal life as a goddess. I especially like the woman in the backgroun who is pointing out that heaven is on earth, here, right now. You know, for all who might have been confused about it :)
