Met Ball Fine or Feh: Michelle Williams

fug-or-fab

I guess I should be glad she’s not wearing a full-on crewneck, right?

In fact, this dress may be one of the most flattering to her neck and bustline that we’ve seen all year — don’t ask me how someone so tiny has such a big tendency to veer into matronly — and I still dig the hair.  I even like the fabric…except that it also reminds me of the front cover of a menu at a fancy Chinese restaurant, and now I’m hungry. It’s too early for moo shu pork! On the other hand: zzzzzzzzzzzzzz. I mean, did you SEE what other people wore? I saw a dude in the crowd wearing a MASK, like he just fell out of Dangerous Liasions. JEN LINDLEY UP YOUR GAME.

I actually love this dress and covet it.

I fear the birds on her chest add to the optical illusion that her boobs are surrendering to gravity…. the whole dress just seems to pull her down into the floor…

    I love her hair though!

I love the draping, I LOVE the sleeves, but I do feel it’s too matronly and certainly too boring for the event. A mother of the bride would kick ass in this though!. PS Thanks for the mention of the Blue Zorro. I love him with a fire!

I like the dress, and I am SO HAPPY to see her looking so much better than usual, but I almost had to vote for the last one because it made me snort.

I too loved this dress and thought it was probably the most flattering dress I’ve seen on her in a long time.

I love the birds!!! the bust to me makes it look like she’s magically top-heavy though

I love this and I want it for myself. Maybe not daring enough for the event, but it looks great on her. It’s nice not to see her looking like an oversized 10 year old.

I love this. Just wish she would tone down the bronzer. Embrace your alabaster complexion, MWill!

I’m so glad others loved it! I adored it and I thought for sure the fuggals would love it as well. Although good call on the chinese menu…

It reminds me of the one Kirsten Dunst wore to the Oscars a few years ago, but her dress was white with blue birds.

This is pretty matronly as is, it would suit Helen Mirren perfectly. I think her problem is that she is short AND short-waisted. She has thin arms and legs, but a very small squarish torso.

I never like this woman’s red carpet facial expressions, so I covered up her head to see what I thought of the dress on its own. It’s a lovely and unusual dress, but too matronly in fit and silhouette for her body shape. Surely she can find a red carpet dress somewhere in between her usual too-cute-and-girlish frocks and this!

No crewneck. Doesn’t look like it was originally designed for a 6-year-old. Interesting draping and fabric details. I have to give this a thumbs up for her. And please, honey, smile. You’re starting to just look smug all the time.

I actually love this times eleventy billion and covet it times eleventy more.

One of her best ever. Sure, it’s no mustard-yellow Vera Wang at the Oscars, but then, what is?

I LOVE this. I wish she’d worn something completely over the top — this IS the event of the year that you can get away with complete sartorial crazy, and even get lauded for it, so why not go all the way?? — but I love this so much more than most other things I’ve seen her in recently that I’m essentially happy with it.

The dress is amazingly excellent on her. However over quite a long time now her hair color has been a problem. A little less yellow would be good and it would appear that she’s been going that direction for a while. Keep on going.

I love this, it is just dramatic but at the same reserved, which is a good thing when everyone else, bar a few, were going all out cuckoo bananas.

I’m kind of over the whole swallows thing. I think MW is trying to go hipster, which is hard to do seeing as she’s a gazillionaire.

I LOVE PBS costume dramas! Michelle’s dress? All right, I guess. She’s so tiny that her clothes often seem to overwhelm her.

I love the dress. But I’m not sure if the hair and expression just make her face look weird, or if I’m a little worried about her weight. Her face seems to be thinning in a very unflattering way.

I like the cut, though the bodice is ever so slightly Edwardian MonoBoob-esque. I’d love to see it in a slightly more vibrant/ethereal colour, like a muted violet or a warn grey.

I think I would like this, except that it reminds me too much of the “Put a bird on it!” sketch from “Portlandia”. Maybe Michelle hasn’t seen that episode.

Can’t stand her makeup here. Way too brown and orangey for her tone.

When, when, when, will she ditch that horrendously unflattering hair color? It washes her out and doesn’t go with her own coloring at all. Cute cut—Darken it! It makes me feel as if she’s trying to be perversely precious, which isn’t attractive.

The dress is perfect. The gal wearing it needs a hair intervention, (looks like barnyard straw) and her makeup makes me think she’s 42 and has had cheek implants, a chin implant, a brow lift, botox, and collagen in her lips.

I love her makeup, it warms up her complexion – I think this dress is great on her. It’s one of the few silhouettes she’s worn lately that she hasn’t drowned in. Plus it’s black! She’s been doing nudes and pastels for so long that this really pops on her. Love it.

I love the dress, but I can’t stand HER. I wish she’d take that stupid haircut and just LEAVE. The makeup cancels out the gamine look she’s trying to acheive, and besides, I think she’s a little too old to be working the gamine thing anyway. Leave that to Carey Mulligan.

She seems to be wearing some sort of shrug/bolero. I would like to see it without that, but I this I would still find this very funereal. This is more bird-phobia inducing than Liv’s for me.

It wasn’t until I scrolled up and reread the title that I realized this was Michelle Williams and not, in fact, Carey Mulligan. Oops.

    But the dress is pretty!

I also love and covet this dress! She looks great – beautiful and stylish! It’s not super dramatic (for the met ball) but it’s not boring either. I really hope that H&M (or the like) knock it off (I don’t typically condone knock offs) so I can afford one of my own!

Okay, I like this dress a lot.

That being said, I do NOT like it on her. She has NO clue how to dress her bosoms! They aren’t that insane, this can’t be this hard. She always looks so awkwardly shaped on top.

And her head is no good either. The hair (which I haven’t liked for a long time) and the makeup combo make her look so old and bland. Ick.
