Kate Middleton-ly Played, Kate Middleton

well-played

Guess who went out with her grandmother-in-law/ruling monarch? Let’s take a look at all the hats!*

*But before we get to the clothes, a note: For some reason, Kate “Duchess Catherine” Middleton inspires unusually fervent responses in people, and the comments on posts about her have a tendency to get a bit out of control. Listen, you don’t have to like her. Feel free to wax poetic about how you think her clothes are boring all day long if you want. But we’re really proud of the fact that Fug Nation is generally a reasonable one, so please keep it civil. Thank you!

i think she’s impeccable, boring shoes and all!

I think she looks like a line backer. Without a belt, her waist to hip ratio is not very noticeable and her shoulders are soo broad. She looks alright in the first coat but the second is totally wrong for her body type.

Forget Kate, the Queen looks AMAZING! Fair play with the diamonds and such!

Ok, Kate looks pretty great too, but she’s young, so it’s easy for her.

Camilla love, that coat is not doing you any favors. Please talk to me before your next clothing purchase.

Love the Missoni coat! Let the Duchess choose from the entire world of fashion! Think of how UK-Italy relations will improve, now that the Duchess is wearing something Italian!

That Missoni coat is exquisite. Such a beautiful line. And seated Lizzie looks decidedly impish.

Just check out the comments left on the Daily Mail whenever a story comes through about her – pretty awful some of them.

I think the issue is that if anyone says anything close to critical of her, all of her fans lose their collective shi*t. Americans seem way more enamored of her than Brits are – which is odd, since she is the one who is representing us.

I’m no real fan of hers – for more substantial reasons – and I tend to think her fashion is quite boring and poorly executed, so it’s a bit mystifying to me that so many people are obsessed with her.

      • Montréalaise
        0

One of my friends is English, and his take on Kate is “It’s absolutely APPALLING that the granddaughter of a coal miner is going to be the Queen of England. So horrible!” I think the Brits are as class-conscious as can be and that is why so many of them are critical of Kate, she’s “going above her station”.

I just love “days of yore”. I’m going try and work it into some conversation today. As far as Kate, I think she is stunning. She somehow makes it look effortless, but methinks there is quite a bit of effort (in a good way) going into her look.

I love the real flowers that Kate is wearing, like she just ran out to the palace garden and picked a couple of fresh ones. The queen’s powder blue is beautiful on her; I even like the pink.

And these women are on their feet for hours at a time. They deserve to wear comfortable shoes that don’t hurt with every step. They’ve chosen well.

Those stripes? A bit emphatic, I think.

Well, I think Kate is lovely, as always. Mostly I’m envious of her ability to wear that gorgeous suit. The belt, the peplum, the origami folds…she looks like a million bucks. I would look like a pillow with a rope tied around its middle. It also delights me to no end that Kate and the Queen seem to get on well.

      This, exactly.

      • Michele
        0

        Agreed, Kary – this, exactly!

I love that Kate knows this is the Queen’s year and is not trying to upstage her in appearance. I believe there’s a difference between conservative and boring, and Kate always falls on the conservative side. Nothing wrong with that; as wife of a Prince and as future Queen, I applaud that she is not attempting to “push the envelope” or be cutting edge. Let that be for Daphne Guinness and Florence Welch.

There was lovely coverage of the two of them on our breakfast news this morning (I’m in Royals-obsessed New Zealand), and it really did seem like the enjoyed being together, shared a few little jokes, etc. Very nice!

I like to think she’s leaning over to say to the queen “Hang on, Granny, it’s just a minute or two to finish up here and then we’ll have our tea.” Or from what I’ve heard about the queen’s favorite tipple, “we’ll have our G&Ts”.

      • Lilibet

Judging by the Quuen’s gleeful smile, G&Ts it is!

Actually, gin and tonic was the Queen Mother’s favourite drink. The Queen’s favourite – I have no idea what it’s called, but here is the recipe: two parts Dubonnet, one part gin, over ice with a slice of lemon.

It’s beautifully 1940s, isn’t it? I can imagine the Queen sporting something similar at a stylish event back when she was young.

I love how Kate knows not to upstage the Queen, but Camilla doesn’t seem to get it.

I also delight in the thought that the Queen is trained to kill with her purse! I’ve always thought there is way more depth to QE than the public sees. HRH Salty Broad, MI6.

HRH Salty Broad is right. In my imaginary conversations with her in my head, I call her “Liz” or “Yer Maj.” and she always chuckles indulgently. She is just SO cool.

In my mind, QE2 is forever played by Scott Thompson.

I wonder if she’s ever in the middle of talking to the Queen and then all of a sudden realizes she’s talking to THE QUEEN. I don’t think I’d ever quite get used to that. I could get used to having all of her clothes and jewelry, though. Boring shoes included. Love her.

    • JJ
      0

And what’s IN QE2′s purse anyway? (Bette Midler used to say, “A little card that says I AM THE QUEEN!”) I adore Kate. I have super girl crush on Kate. LOVE them both.

  12. Lynne

@Daphne, until you mentioned it, I had absolutely no reason to think about the Queen’s bra. And now I can’t see anything else. And while we’re noticing things we wish we hadn’t, the Queen is kind of… stacked, isn’t she?

Kate looks lovely — yet another coat I want for my very own.

Finally, there have been several photos of Hot Harry’s Caribbean vacation online. I’m (not so) patiently awaiting the Fug Girls photo essay on the topic. Thank you.

        I agree.
The Queen’s hat is not just good, she is not the afterthought here (Middleton knows her place), it’s freaking terrific (Beg your pardon, Mum!).
It is perfectly suited to her age and station, but it is not in the tiniest bit boring.
I simply adore how darn’d clever it is. (And I’ll bet Liz knows it.)
Some might feel her outfit is too matchy-matchy (the preferred designer’s technical term-coordination being for tennis players), but I am simply tickled pink by how matched she is. Indeed I’m tickled fuchsia.
E2R Forever, and nice job Kate!

Hilarious. I had exactly the same thought and wondered why no one had mentioned it before. And yes, a good bra would do wonders for her outfit. I often think the same of Camilla. That her clothes would look that much better if she just wore the right bra.

    • Dru
      0

Lynne, I do agree with you. Clearly Rigby&Peller need a stern talking-to about how best to support the Royal Rack. (which is funny, because their bras have a reputation for being supportive like none other)

I am pretty sure I am never going to get the phrase “support the Royal Rack” out of my brain for the rest of my natural life. Lord love a duck that is just too funny.

I adore Kate’s first suit. Having blue eyes and dark hair (sadly, nowhere near as lovely as Kate’s hair), I always love shades of blue. But this one is a particular standout I think. And it’s got lovely lines.

  14. Danna

I think Kate’s lovely. And when she married into the royal family I think she pretty much knew that dressing like Euro-trash or the Kardashians was just way out of the question.

      0

THAT is exactly one of the many reasons I LOVE Kate! She’s wearing nude pantyhose because it’s damned chilly in England and she’s not going to freeze just for the sake of fashion. Who decided that nude pantyhose were “out” anyway? Probably some man with really hairy legs who sweats in his pants.

      Long live the NUDE HOSE!!!

The identically crossed ankles in picture 2 are the cutest things I’ve seen in ages. ADORBS.
I like to imagine that these 2 are/are becoming total bffs in real life since the wedding. Imagine the afternoon teas of propriety….and SAUCINESS!!

Camilla’s stripes are both sad and aggressive.

Well, I don’t know who could say anything bad about our lovely Duchess. She’s gorgeous and perfect. She is classy all the time while still looking her age and GOD HER HAIR IS PERFECT. I love the Missoni coat. And I love the Queen — she’s one rockin’ old lady. Also, the picture of the two of them sitting with their ankles crossed makes me think of The Princess Diaries. But that might just be me.

    • Jules
      0

I adore the idea of the two of them kicking back over a nice gin fizz or three and some snacks, just talking about clothes and what William was like as a baby and other things you should do with a Gran (even is she is the Queen, she deserves some fun!).

  20. laura

Anyone else surprised the Queen had her purse on the floor? You’d think she’d have royal purse handlers or something….
In Central America women are always scolding other women about putting your purse on the floor, something about your money seeping through the ground nonsense, of course if you are the Queen then maybe this isn’t a concern for you….

    • LG
      0

She always carries her own bag (and often drives her own car and walks her own dogs and just gets on with it, because she is fantastic). And apparently there’s a whole code for her staff/attendants depending on where it sits or which arm she has it on.

    • Kris M

I really really hate peplums. HOW IS IT POSSIBLE THAT I LIKE IT ON KATE? Seriously, she looks adorable in that! And I love her little hat.

    • Sarah
      0

Jasmine, I have the same dilemma! HATE peplums! HATE. They are fussy and unflattering. And yet, on Kate I go “Damn if she doesn’t look pretty.”

      • LoriK
        0

ITA. Kate is making something work that I flat out hate virtually all the time. I’m trying not to give in to envy. The fact that the 2nd picture is just flat out adorable really helps with that since it’s hard to be in a pissy mood while looking at something that cute.

      • Chasmosaur
        0

Peplums have a place – very structured suits for slim women. They help create curves and emphasize a tiny waist. So, perfect for her.

It doesn’t hurt that is a glorsplendiferous color.

    • Kris M
      0

I think it’s because it’s not a REAL peplum that’s an unnecessary appendage, it’s just her coat flaring out.

    • RD
      0

The question everyone who wants to wear peplum should ask herself: “Am I at least 5’10? Am I a size 0?” If no to either, back away from the butt fringe.

      • Michele
        0

        Butt fringe – tee hee!

I was forced into a peplum for my sister’s wedding. NOT a good look on a short, round girl. However, the willowy (5’10″, size 0) bridesmaid next to me rocked the look.

I have called dibs on coming back as Kate Middleton in my next life. And possibly for several after that. Once again, an outfit that she makes look lovely. It’s a tough colour and a tough cut for most to pull off.

I also noticed that she pushes her knees together when bending down (to get flowers from a child) and the proper ankle cross while sitting. Could Kate et co. please come to Hollywood to teach ettiquette lessons?

  25. Kirsten

The Queen has a sort of sign language thing with her handbag to signal to her ladies in waiting. If she holds it one way it means things are ok, if she holds it another way she wants to leave, if she holds it another way she needs the toilet etc. I wouldn’t describe her as stacked but she’s always been shapely http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tAWSUN8Xlrc/TbvfclTk3oI/AAAAAAAAAsk/1E20mab9bo8/s1600/Queen%2BElizabeth%2BII.jpg

I don’t get the whole “let’s hate the Duchess of Cambridge” thing.

I LOVE how the Queen color coordinated her outfit to match Fortnum and Mason’s color scheme. That’s dedication, Your Majesty.

Princess Kate is, as ALWAYS, lovely.

P.S. I adore the matching ankle crossing while sitting. Apparently the lady behind them never saw The Princess Diaries when they addressed the fact that ladies do NOT cross their legs, only their ankles. :)

        Fug Girls AND Adriele :
Sorry it’s the icky Daily Mail, but you’ll love the photos at the end of this article. Her Majesty colour-co-ordinates her UMBRELLAS with her outfits. THAT is dedication.
        http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2112394/Diamond-Jubilee-tour-They-loved-Kate-Middleton-Queen-REALLY-came-see.html

I adore her. A great number of the Americans I deal with on a daily basis are idiots who think that everyone from England is absolutely obssessed with the Queen (yes yes; they are idiots, and I’m not grouping all Americans in with them!), and I hate to give them fuel for their fire, but I just love Her Majesty. She is always so impeccably well-presented and classy. You never hear of some great scandal coming from her. I think she does such a wonderful job of representing us.
And oh, the hats. I wish we still wore hats with everyday wear!

  28. Gigi

    Black hat = YES
Peplum suit = gives her needed curves
Blue coat or coatdress = fabulous. The DM is always reaching for the smelling salts.
Daffodil corsage = perfect color counterpoint with all the appropriate symbolism that royals are supposed to bear.

Camilla looks like she just stepped out of an old Bugs Bunny cartoon, one where Elmer Fudd or Wil E. Coyote has just gotten run over by a painting machine, thus leaving them covered in stripes.

Kate, as always, looks fabulous and I want everything she’s wearing.

And Her Majesty looks marvellous. I love that pink!

    • Elise

Camilla needs to get a hold of Kate’s stylist and hold him/her hostage at gunpoint until they agree to take her on!

  30. Frankie
    0

Does anyone else think Kate should collaborate with Victoria Beckham and release a collection inspired by her own wardrobe? I’m thinking an Autumn/Winter range of structured coats and dresses would sell like the proverbial hot cakes. In fact, that Kate isn’t wearing more of Victoria’s designs already is a suprise to me – they seem like they’d really suit her aesthetic.

  31. Blanche
    0

Kate developed a hata squad, eh? Whatevs. Weirdly, I always enjoy her fabulously-tailored appearance on this site. Prior to Middleton, I resolutely believed that royal inbreeding had destroyed aesthetic taste in the European feudal bloodlines…Although, she doesn’t disprove that theory, does she?

Now give me something to sink my teeth into, like that insipid Walden Media/Anschutz puppet/Park Slope Co-op shirker Maggie Gyllenhaal. I will tear her a new one, and it’ll be easy because she always dresses like a sucker. Oh, hell hath no wrath like a unionized public education fan scorned…by a sartorial limp biscuit. For years, I defended that dowdy, braless Quisling. Bring that Gyllenhaal on. I want a piece of HER.

    • Sajorina
      0

What is your problem, Blanche? What did Maggie Gyllenhaal do to you? It isn’t fair that because Jessica said to be civil in our comments about Kate, you insult someone else who has nothing to do with this post instead! Shameful…

Also: I. Do. Not. Get. Camilla.

Please God. I mean, she has gazillions of dollars, yes? And quite shapely legs? And is not a bad looking Woman Of A Certain Age? AND YET she manages to look SO DOWDY and DATED ALL THE DAMN TIME. Do not understand.

    • Jacq
      0

I think she’s just a product of her generation and breeding: her appearance is entirely normal when seen in the context of upper class English women of A Certain Age. Amongst that set it’s considered deeply naff to be flashy with one’s wardrobe (which also explains why Kate will make safe and conservative fashion choices for the rest of her life).

And she gets a pass from me for pretty much anything she wears, because I’ve met her and chatted with her – she is a lovely woman who in no way deserves the flack she’s got from people over the years.

      • Gigi
        0

Nice testimonial, Jacq! I’ve also heard she has a wicked (wonderful) sense of humor.

      • Heather
        0

Also, if she did anything other than what she’s doing, I imagine The Wrath of QEII would come down upon her, and Camilla is probably trying to stay as clear of that as possible.

      • LG
        0

Oh, no way am I criticizing HER. She seems like a pretty solid broad who got wrenched over by a shithouse elitist amoral system (read: Prince P and Uncle Dickie) about forty years ago and who’s managed to make a life for herself since which is hella admirable. (Sidenote: I wonder what dinnertable convo must be like when the boys visit. I feel like you’d need a PhD to wade through all that “I’m amiably chatting about the weather with the woman my dad was sleeping with all through my parents’ completely miserable marriage because my granddad told him that ‘bedded can’t be wedded’ and could you pass the salt Camilla good god life is weird” SUBTEXT.)

The hair, on the other hand…

  33. Megan M
    0

It’s so distracting to me in the one picture that they’re all wearing blue. Do you think they coordinated that or did they all show up for the car that morning and go “damn!” but they didn’t have time to run back upstairs and change (for the obvious reasons that a) the queen doesn’t and b) just getting back into your room in the palace would take 15 minutes (this is in a world where all the royals live in Buckingham Palace and have formal dinners every evening where someone is always not speaking at someone else and there’s lots of scandal and strife))?

  34. Stefanie

Kate is indeed lovely, but I think her look would be improved if she lightened up on the black eyeliner a little. Maybe the same application but in dark brown? I don’t know. It really distracted me during the wedding, though! Also, she is a very … narrow woman, isn’t she? So tall and yet, so wee! Sigh, so lucky…

    • Maria

I totally agree with you on the eyeliner. I have a total crush on Kate and I think she looks beautiful, poised, and fun in every situation, BUT, she has perpetually too hard eyeliner. Just smudge it a little, please!!

OMG, the 5th picture is priceless… Desktop Background, anyone? I love everything Kate’s wearing in these pictures, even the shoes (but not the nude hose, really)! I love the color of her first outfit and the hat is soooo cute! And, I’m in love with that Missoni coat with the color matching shoes! WANT! She looks lovely, as always!

The Queen also reminds me of my own Grandma, who’s 95 now and barely mobile and wouldn’t leave the house unless she looked impeccable or welcomed visitors into her home unless she was properly dressed and presentable! And, always wore matching everything! So cute!

I would be totally nervous all of the time having the Queen as my husband’s grandmother. Kate deserves a lot of credit in pulling this (fashionable/demure outfits) off with aplomb. That said, I also love Her Majesty’s pink hat – very jaunty.

Kate looks so very beautiful, as always, but I wish she would put the weight back on, she is so very skinny now. Of course if she does get her hips back the press will say she’s pregnant so she can’t win, poor girl!

    • Chasmosaur
      0

I’m hoping once she gets pregnant, she’ll retain some post-pregnancy curve. In the meantime, yes – this girl is scrutinized like few are. So she dresses for her job – she is part of the “family firm” – and probably can’t do anything without thinking 20 gazillion steps ahead.

  44. Sally

HRH Salty Broad (LOVE THAT!) does, indeed, look fab- that skin! So dewy and unwrinkled at 85. But her shoes with the pink outfit? They are worn, shapeless and unpolished- LOVE IT!
And Kate looks like she is enjoying life- good for her.

It made me sad to see that Fug Nation needed a warning to play nice :( especially where Princess Shinylocks (henceforth) is concerned. She is gorgeous and lovely and looks and sounds so….NICE. And, as another commenter said, is impeccably dressed. I can understand the “boring” comment, but I’d rather look at something lovely and boring than FUG and OMGWTFa;lsdjf;o019*&YIUH^6e#!@#$ghfl?! I just love how lovely and 1940′s Kate looks in this outfit. The hat is perfectly jaunty and the suit is impeccable and beautiful. I didn’t know the Windsor girls were so into their gin, me too! I could be BFF with them all and fit right in! After all, I share a birthday with Kate’s hubby.
Anyway, I wonder what the Queen does with all of her hats? She must have hundreds, if not thousands. I like that she is not afraid of a bold COLOR.
I think if Camilla’s coat had the stripes closer to the hem, it would look better. I do enjoy that the Queen seems to be thinking “look away! look away!” from the atrocity.

The Queen wears her hats more than once. She also has them redone, with different decorations. Try this site if you’d like to see a lot of her hat and suit combinations: http://madhattery.royalroundup.com/

Do you think the press loves to publish only pictures in which the Queen looks as if she is snubbing Camilla, or is the Queen actually always snubbing Camilla?

I do not get the ‘play nice’ warning either. I read this site all the time and I have never read anything hateful about this woman. Personally though, speaking only for myself, what I don’t get are all the posts and pictures about Kate M. She consistently looks fine. She SHOULD look fine. She has access to clothes from designers all over the world, she is physically attractive and in shape, and yes, she has nice hair. So, there you have it — it’s all fine.

People have written some really nasty stuff about her on here before – about her weight, fertility, and something about “not contributing to society”… who knows. So I’m kind of glad that Jessica said this – never hurts to remind people to be fair and that it’s all about the clothes.

For some reason I am obsessed with the hem lengths on the picture of the Queen, Camilla and Kate. Is there a rule on this? Like… Queen, just above the ankle. Sort of homewrecker who has nonetheless managed to become part of the family remarkably well, just below the knee. Heir apparent and fabulous grand-daughter in law, above the knee. I want to know how these things are decided! lol

Boy the Queen can certainly pull off a major hat. Not everyone could do that. But then again, not everyone gets to wear a crown every now and then either.

I think she looks fine, although I do wish the skirt from the Leicester event had been just a couple of inches longer. While she was walking it was okay, but when she sat down the skirt seemed a little short. She’s worn knee length before, so we know she looks good, and not dowdy, with a longer length.

Is anyone a fan of history here? Kate has to be boring because she is not the star – the QUEEN is celebrating 60 YEARS on the throne… The QUEEN is to be the star & diva of the day. Yes, Kate wore boring shoes, but the cut on the suit was amazing, and still the QUEEN was the focus of the show. Also, Kate was the only junior royal to be present as the QUEEN toured her first UK city in celebration of her 60 YEARS of being the QUEEN.
    Well played Kate, well done…

In reference to the haters – they are a) jealous or b) lacking in any kind of taste. Kate is impeccable. She has brought back class and decorum (yes, people look it up) to popular culture. Yes, her shoes are boring, but she is not a stripper – she is basically a public relations figure for the monarchy. No one complains that Latizia of Spain wears boring shoes.

I think it’s interesting you brought up Letizia – her fashion sense is way more out-there. She seems very New York to me – layers, accessories, pantsuits, miniskirts, directional pieces. I actually think her style is WAY more interesting and creative than KM’s but at the same time I can’t really point out exactly what her aesthetic is. Which is the reason, I guess, that there are so many copy-Kates, it’s a lot easier to dress like her.

      • Dru
        0

ooooh, I LOVE Princess Leti’s dress sense. I do agree it’s very “professional woman” in a way, there’s not much she wears that would look out of place at her former job as a journalist, but she’s always impeccable and for that, credit must be given.

People are entitled not to like what she wears, or to not be totally sold on her, if that’s really how they feel. It’s when things descend into cruel slings and arrows about anorexia and infertility that we really draw the line.

    1) I LOVE the Queen’s pink and black hat. So structured, not too wild, but distinct and shapely and fun. Probably I would only like it on the Queen, and maybe only because it matches/complements her outfit so well, but still. Love.

    2) When I first scanned the picture of the three of them, I passed right over Camilla because I thought she was some boring person in official ceremonial robes of some sort. (So much like a choir robe!)

    3) I love the Queen’s whole outfit in the last two pictures as well. So classy and appropriate but with interesting details. Superb!

    4) Kate was awesome as usual.

    • Stephanie

Haha! Yes – ceremonial robes are exactly what those look like on poor Camilla. She looks like she is about to bestow degrees on university graduates.

    • Mel
      0

Ha, I ALSO thought that about Camilla’s choir robes. Sigh. She could have done SO much better, and it was definitely unfortunate placement between Princess Kate FTW (fab!) and HRH the Queen (extra fab!).

I just do not understand why people don’t like Kate. She seems nice, she dresses classy, her etiquette is flawless, she seems to make Wills v. happy, and the Queen likes her. What more could you want? Seriously, if she isn’t good enough, who is? I heart you, Kate!!!!!!!

      This, x 1000.

Previous poster: No, not jealous and certainly not “lacking any kind of taste”. Ever occur to you that some of us might have genuine, considered reasons for objecting to the whole Disney Princess Kate nonsense? No, we must be all “haters”. Grow up.

Please be aware, not all Brits are fawning Royalphiles whipped into paroxysms of ecstacy by the sight of her shiny hair. Actually, most of us are Republicans, in the original sense of the word. Not that you’d guess that from reading these comments…

Well, I have a friend who can afford and thus indulges in designers clothes only but always seems to be wearing the same back potato sack. So… Cheers to Kate M.
But I guess I am the only one who doesn’t like the green tailored thingie… I guess I am not a big fan of deep green and black for starters. And the coat rubbs me the wrong way. It’s not very flattering. But I’ll just add that I love her passion for belts over coats and dresses – she has the body to rock those.
And it also made me sad to see a warning for out-of-line posting Daily Mail-style here.

    • Franziska

I think you still need a certain grace, a certain figure and a certain personality to look as good as she does. Just because she doesn’t have to pay for her own wardrobe and has help in the make-up and hair department doesn’t mean that she’s automatically looking good. Oh, and the Royal Family cost the taxpayer roughly about 85 pence per person per year. I’ll gladly pay double this to get a look at the Queen, Harry, William or Kate.

The Queen and Kate look perfect together. The colours of their clothes are beautifully complementary. With Camilla in the middle, you are drawn Kate and the Queen looking right for each other on each side.

I love the Queen. She is a wonderful woman. I bet she and Kate get on like a house on fire.

I love that at the earlier event the three ladies seem to have coordinated their outfits so it’s a nice range of blues, and also that they seem to be genuinely getting along and enjoying hanging out together. They’re all cheerful and smiling at one another! Come on, big AWW!

Also, to everyone who comments about how easy it is to look good with a lot of money and the entourage, please take note that this ENTIRE SITE is dedicated to the genetically blessed, very rich women who employ teams of handlers, personal shoppers, hair stylists and makeup artists and still manage to look bad, boring or inappropriate on many an occasion.

So why do we follow Kate rabidly? Because even when her outfits are a tad on the predictable side, she knows what works and has mastered the art of ALWAYS looking plain GOOD. She often tries to throw in an interesting element, like a hat or lace detailing. She stays true to her style and doesn’t go for things that are too frou-frou or avant-garde. Even when she wears expensive things, they lack an air of pretense. She wears high-street labels to red-carpet events without looking like she is pandering. But mostly she just seems nice, and happy, and friendly, and who wouldn’t want to know her?

I would kill – KILL – for that green suit. It’s a work of beautifully fitted art. And yes, perhaps the shoes are a smidge boring but I think perhaps Kate sensed that she didn’t want her styling to compete with the Queen’s awesome hat. In fact, this whole post has made me wish that I could wear cool hats and not end up looking like a muppet.

  72. Nancy

I LOVE the Queen’s light blue number! Also re: the pink, I love that she doesn’t shy away from bright colours. She looks awesome.

Kate: she looks lovely and gorgeous as always (love the colour she’s waring in the first outfit) but I’m a bit bored of her ‘look’. I kind of want her to go crazy and dye her hair/ wear spandex. Anything to annoy the Daily Mail. Anything.

  73. M.Amanda
    0

I’m not usually a Missoni fan (don’t stone me!), but I love the Missoni coat. The flowers are perfect. Camilla, God bless her, looks frumpy in that coat. It wouldn’t do her any harm to try cinching at the waist once in a while.

I have visions of designers presenting the queen with outfits where the hat does not perfectly match the coat. The queen frowns a bit and the designer pees himself, then runs from the room crying tears of shame. The queen shakes her head and digs in her purse for a mint to suck on while waiting for the next outfit to be brought in. I can’t wait until I’m old and it will be more acceptable to coordinate my outfits like the queen does. If I could afford it, I’d carry nearly every single bag she own right now, though.

  74. Sweetsinger

Until Camilla does something to update her awful 70′s ‘do, there is no hope of her ever looking like anything but a frump, no matter what she wears. Until then, she should avoid being photographed next to the Duchess.

No need to be rude about Camilla neither, I believe.
I think she is a great person (remember when Karl Lagerfeld said if you had to marry someone it should be Camilla because she was so funny and intelligent?)
And anyway, to me she looks lovely. She is a 60something woman by now and not a model

It seems strange to me that Kate gets the brunt of any discontent with the British monarchy. I don’t see how taxpayers dollars contributing towards the lifestyle of royals is placed upon her shoulders (and, while I have no doubt much money is spent upon them, I was under the impression the Duchess purchased her own clothing?). I understand how it might be frustrating to hear people endlessly gush over her and her style, but to somehow imply that the fortunes of the monarchy is HER fault or HER place to fix is baffling to me.

    • steen
      0

Amen. I can only conclude that either A) People in England secretly do believe in the superiority of the royal bloodline and are furious that Kate made Princess, or B) Are stauch republicans (in the British sense) and are enraged that she has single-handedly made the monarchy popular again.

From over here in the US, all I see is a poised, gracious woman who seems to be genuinely liked by her grandmother in-law; even more so than the “true” royal grandchildren.

    • Chelsea

I was under the impression that taxpayer pounds are not spent to support the royal family. That public funds are used for their public duties, but not as their personal income (though perhaps an outfit for an event falls into the “duties” budget). Obviously, the Queen is as rich as God (from centuries of making money off the taxpayers?) and has a stock portfolio worth literally billions.

Does anyone have a better understanding of the royal economics, and know whether Missoni goes into the public budget?

The Queen’s pink-and-black hat is delicious–and I mean that semi-literally: it looks like a cake from a particularly creative bakeshop.

And Kate looks gorgeous. I love that first suit with a passion. The color is DIVINE, and the details around the neckline are terrific.

I can’t help it, but I have such a total girl crush on her. She has such a lovely smile, and she always looks like she’s enjoying herself, which says so much about her (because surely she’s NOT always enjoying herself). And she has the most beautiful hair on earth. No one is supposed to look like a shampoo commercial every time they set foot outside; it’s so hard on the rest of us…

I don’t even care that her hair is always down. I’ve yet to see her make a single stylistic misstep, and for someone with such a high profile, that’s amazing. And clothes look stunning on her.

  78. MEL

I like Kate’s suit. It is a bit retro but yet still up-to-date. The Queen looks good for a lady ‘of a certain age’. I will never understand the upper class Brit obsession with funky hats but that is just my thing. I’m not a hat person.

  79. Jessica

Poor Kate is required to wear boring court shoes at all official outings. Not her fault. They aren’t too terrible. Her coats are lovely despite their provenance, she looks happy to be wherever she is, and she actually looks as if she gets on well with her in-laws.

The Missoni is my favorite of the duchess’s coats (fits her like a glove and the color is beautiful) so the DM should untwist its panties. And the Queen reminds me of my late, greatly missed and very beloved aunt. She too loved a color-coordinated outfit.

Until you mentioned commenters’ tendency to flame Kate Middleton, I truly had no idea there were any Kate-haters in the world. What could people possibly hate her for? We know almost nothing about this person except that she photographs very well and married a prominent public figure. What are the haters hating?

    • Montréalaise
      0

They hate her because she was born into a middle class, not upper class family and even worse – horror of horrors! – her grandparents were working class. One of her grandfathers was a coal miner. To socially-mobile North Americans, this is no big deal, but the British are very, very class conscious.

Although this post is about Duchess Catherine, may I say that the queen is rockin’ that hot pink? I can’t recall seeing her in something other than a pastel, and she looks fabulous here. The two-toned hat also seems to be a bold choice for her, and it’s terrific!

I love her and think young women all over the world could take lessons from her on how to be elegant and fashionable at the same time, rather than look like streetwalkers.
