Fug or Fab: Naomi Watts

This dress looks like someone wrapped her in fuchsia snakeskin bandages.

And yet somehow, being in the clutches of twelve Velcro fingers works for her. Yeah, it’s pressing on her chest a little, but only a little, and her skin is freaking luminous. For those of you worried about Hollywood’s dwindling bracelet game, my view is that her entire body looks like a rack of them from an accessories store, so maybe one on her wrist would be a hat on a hat (to mix accessory references)(also, I would accept a hat on a hat, by the way, if it were a Pharrell hat on a Pharrell hat. I’m a little sick of that hat right now, but if a person stacked them, then maybe I’d be back in because that’d be some surrealist Mountie non-realness right there).

In sum: This sucker is weird and looks like she’s being mauled by a cartoon sea creature, but she is making that look gorgeous and so I think I might be in on this. I DID love Finding Nemo, after all.

Brightly coloured animal print and/or snakeskin will always make me think of the tackiest part of the 80s and I therefore reject it in all forms. I just can’t. She’s lovely, though. I’d be happy if she kept the styling and replaced the dress with something prettier.

Here is another iteration, in which I think the top fits better, but I’m not crazy about the skirt.

I kind of like Naomi’s, but I kind of don’t at the same time. Sigh. Mondays.

Hmmm… I like Felicity Jones’s version a LOT better. Naomi’s is just too, too much.

  3. Stefanie

This is crazy but I really like it. I guess that’s the power of the styling.

    • Kristen

I like it as well though I wish the hemline was straight, not slap-banded.

  4. Alicia

That’s almost as bad as the version Felicity Jones wore. I just don’t think making a dress of slap bands is a good idea.

  5. BrownEyedBetty

A dress of slap bands….too right. Love the color though! I’m a sucker for anything iridescent.

  6. jerkygirl

If those slap-bracelets really do go on that dress with giant strips of velcro, I will love her forever for wearing it to the kind of event where “U’s” are replaced by “V’s” because it’s fancier. She must have a good sense of humor to wear that crazy thing, but yeah, she really is working it. ???

  7.  Hannah

I refuse to forgive a horrible dress just because she’s freaking gorgeous.

  8. patuxxa

I pretty much only clicked on this in the hope of bonus Liev Schreiber. Not even Naomi’s lolevy smile can help this mess of a dress.

  9. Lizzy

Might have worked better if the ends of the bands were aligned and were further to her left. Kinda looks sloppy as is.

    Lovely color on her, though!

  10.  Billie

All I see here is a fancy, celebrity inspired post-pregnancy belly band.

  11. ringletwraith

Looks similar to my weightlifting belt.

Correction — looks similar to twelve of my weightlifting belts.

  12.  karacocoa

I love Naomi Watts, bu this dress upsets me.

  13.  HelenBackAgain

I would love it if it had a waist.

  14. Lerie

This is horrible. She is wearing my knee brace x 10.

  15. Lady B.

This looks better than it has any right to. Her arms and shoulders are amazing!

  16. VV

Looks like a bunch of velcro straps. Is that where all my cable tidies went?

  17. Teresa

I don’t like the dress, but I love that you counted the bands, which them caused me to count them.

  18. Art Eclectic

I liked it at first glance when I thought it was a pattern, but as soon as I realized those were actual straps my reaction turned to “ew, pass”.

  19. Roz

This is a hard one. I freakin LOVE that pink snakeskin and the black together. But no matter how much I want to, I can’t get on board with those round Velcro-lookin’ strips, damn it!

  20.  KarenG958

No, too weird for me. Plus my cat hates the sound of Velcro, so she would probably tear it apart.

  21. Heidi

She looks beautiful but that dress is owning her.

  22. witjunkie

What good is having a dress made of velcro kneebraces if you can’t even cinch yourself a waist.

  23. lali

I too love Finding Nemo (which my daughter used to refer to as Momo but has since graduated to pronouncing as Memo) but this pattern reminds me more of the bad guy in Monsters Inc. He might have been closer to purple than pink but either way he is who came to mind when I saw this. It’s like someone at Johnson & Johnson said, “Why not include super-ginormous-wrap-around-a-full-grown-adult-so-they-can-be-almost-like-a-mummy in our assorted sizes of the Monster BAND-AID?” Yes, they really do have Monster’s University as an option – http://www.band-aid.com/submission_container?bvdisplaycode=1231-en_us&bvappcode=rr&bvproductid=2012&bvpage=http%3A%2F%2Freviews.bandaid.com%2F1231-en_us%2F2012%2Fsubmitreview.htm%3Fformat%3Dembedded%26sessionparams%3D__BVSESSIONPARAMS__%26return%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.band-aid.com%252Fproducts%252Ffor-kids%26user%3D__USERID__%26authsourcetype%3D__AUTHTYPE__&bvcontenttype=REVIEW_SUBMISSION&bvauthenticateuser=false .

Anyway – she is gorgeous. This…garment? is not.

  24. Gypsy Danger

NO, but great face, great arms and shoulders. Now I kind of wish this was held together by Velcro because I can’t help but picture her getting out of this dress and the amazing sound it would make.

  25. gryt

I wish her hair wasn’t side swept, in the same direction as the dress at that. I think. Yeah, too much asymmetry.

  26. CopyChic

Imagining lingerie made out of velcro bands with this pink snakeskin material and how the moment of removal would create … an unforgettable evening.

  27. Natalie

There is not one single part of this look I like. I hate the hair, the dress and the accessories. ICK. This dress is AWFUL.

  28. heather

LUNA PADS! The dress instantly reminded of luna pads. not good.

  29. G

It looks like it’s gradually unwinding and is going to land in an ugly heap at her feet any minute now.
