Fugger: Octavia Spencer

Fugs and Fabs: The National Board of Review Awards

First the New York Film Critics Circle, then this, and the People’s Choice Awards are tonight, so that makes three days in a row of things keeping Hollywood spit-shined and speckled and shoe-horned into glad rags, all in advance of the Globes on Sunday. Nobody loves giving out statuettes more than this town, and bless it for THAT.

Fugs and Fabs: AMPAS’ Governors Awards

Because it’s Monday morning, and you NEED to see a shot of Angela Lansbury kicking it with Angelina Jolie.

In which Sandra Bullock and Lupita Nyong’o battle it out for best dressed. Start the awards season as you mean to go on, I suppose.

Fugs, Fabs, and Fines: Various Fruitvale Station screenings

First of all, I am really looking forward to seeing this movie; I’ve heard it’s fantastic. Second, can we just talk about how I want all the good things in the universe for Michael B. Jordan? He has a quality that makes him innately sympathetic in EVERYTHING from All My Children to Friday Night Lights. I spent all of FNL — where, Hart of Dixie fans, if you haven’t seen it, Mayor Lavon Hayes played his SUPER TERRIBLE father — wanting to hug him. He didn’t have to do anything. Every time I saw his face, I just wanted to run up to him and hug him. (Finding actors with this quality must be a Jason Katims specialty because I also felt this way about Matt Lauria and Zach Gilford.) It does not hurt that he wears a suit very well. Let’s ogle him (and other people)!

Oscars Fug(ish) Carpet: Octavia Spencer

You guys know how great we think Octavia Spencer is. She spent all of last awards season looking amazing, and she was a scream on 30 Rock this season. So I want the best for her. Sadly, although I don’t think this is a complete strike out, I fear she’s behind on the count:

When you’re the outgoing Best Supporting Actress, I think you’re in a rough spot. You obviously want to look great, because you are human, and an actor. But you also, if you are a smart and sensitive person, you realize that this evening is not All About You, so you want to have the glam turned up to only about…say, a nice strong 7. How do you manage to juggle Fantastic with Not Making It All About You? I don’t know (which is one of the many reasons I am not a stylist, which has got to be a really hard job). And I think this is really close, but perhaps not completely on target. It’s drifting down from a 7 and closer to a 5, and a 5 is not good enough for Octavia Spencer.

Critics’ Choice Awards: The Best and Worst of the Rest

Thanks to technical difficulties, we didn’t get through as much stuff as we wanted to this last week. And so, a special GFY Saturday post that clears out the detritus from our lightboxes as we make way for the Golden Globes on Sunday. Big fun, y’all.
