Well Played, Dita Von Teese

well-played

I know I complain about Dita on occasion — I occasionally wonder if her look is becoming less flattering as she’s getting older, and sometimes it leaves me cold, despite the fact that I actually really love the Old Hollywood Aesthetic. This, however, I think is delightful:

Also delightful? The fact that she’s attending an event called “Mario Lopez Receives The 2013 North America Hairstyling Award.” I pray to all the gods that this is literally an award for the dude who seems more adept at wrangling his own coif. In which case, Seacrest was robbed.

Oh I covet this, head to toe (and arm because that little bag is fab).

I kind of just wish the little shoulder pads weren’t there–brings back too many unpleasant memories.

I think they work. They’re more 1940′s Hollywood starlet than 1980′s realtor.

I also love this. Her look usually works for me when it is Old Hollywood/40s-inspired, but she loses me when she veers into costume territory.

Sometimes she veers into Hollywood horror movie territory … and, yes, the makeup and hair will start to look aging at some point, versus retro-hip.

I do wish her makeup was a little softer and rosier, rather than all black and white and red. She could do something more flattering and radiant and still be authentically retro.

Dita is fabulous and if you haven’t seen her perform live, you are missing out big time!

She could be wearing Kleenex and Saran Wrap and I would forgive her because she brought the event called “Mario Lopez Receives The 2013 North America Hairstyling Award” to my attention. That’s priceless. I want a t-shirt from that event as a companion for my “Scott Baio International Day of Peace” t-shirt.

I love her…without apology….no matter what she wears. And someday when she’s dressing like this, with a wrap and her cane wrapped in crystal and people saying she’s “too old” to be so decked out…I shall love her still.

Love the polka dot, and I need this dress in many colors (of dots, I mean). Black and white, white and red, etc.. It would be so cute!

Are some of the dots actually bombs? I love it, and she is a bombshell.

I’d like this dress a lot more if the colors were different. As it is, I’m going to have Roger and his trombone in my head at least until Twilight Bark-time.

I never “got” Dita at all- but I love her in this look.

This is beautiful – love that bag.

Perfectly put together, head to toe, and the round bag with it too! Lovely.

It also looks supremely comfortable, which is not something one can often say about a von Teese ensemble. But this really does.

Yes! It drapes beautifully. Isn’t it SO much better than all those ultra-tight low-cut bandage mini dresses the Amanda Bynes’s of the world keep squeezing themselves into?

Those do have their place, but so do cool and ladylike things like this one.

I also like that it “covers a lot of ground,” as my mother used to say. This dress would be appropriate in a variety of venues and on a variety of women – you don’t need a Dita von Teese figure to pull it off.

I’d change the little padded capped sleevelets. Strap, or a short but real sleeve.

This might be the least we have seen of her skin in a very long time. It’s great! Goes to show your clothes do not need to be tight AND revealing to make an impact.

I need this dress. In every color combination imaginable. Then I would wear it every single day. No joke. Lovely

Except for the length of the dress, there is a sort of Katy Perry vibe to this, to me. And I mean that in the best possible way (I am usually onboard with Katy)
