Oscar Weekend Fug or Fab Carpet: Leslie Mann

fug-or-fab

Between this and her Emmys dress — which, as you know, I loved – I feel like Leslie Mann has decided she is ONLY going to dress like she’s throwing a Palm Springs Pool Party.

And because I too wish I were always at a Palm Springs Pool Party, I actually like this dress. If it existed in a vacuum. Or were at a Palm Springs Pool Party for real. At the Oscars, I’m less convinced.

Convince me:

I LOVED this when I saw it. It fits beautifully, it’s interesting, it’s flattering, it’s even tastefully sexy. Heidi Klum and Brandi Glanville note–it is possible to be sexy and be wearing clothes that actually cover more than 12% of your epidermis.

This works because it FITS! Right length in the sleeves and hem. Hugs her in all the right places while not being too tight. TA DA! A lovely, lovely look.

It’s time for the dance of the poolboy!

LOVE it, especially because she wore it to an Oscar party! The burnt siena is gorgeous, it fits her beautifully, and the beading is interesting! And her hair & makeup are great! FAB!!!

While I love the dress, I don’t agree about the hair – I feel like she should have put it up in some kind of fancy ponytail. Having it down covers the beautiful beaded neckline.

She looks so great though, so that is a minor nitpick!

My mother had this dress in the early 70s. UGH.

When she dresses well she always looks like the sartorial equivalent of a Nancy Meyer’s movie to me. And I would murder someone to cook in a Nancy Meyer’s kitchen, so drowning in a ten foot tiki head full of mai tai at Leslie’s pool party would be a dream. The applique or beadwork on the neckline of this dress is divine. She’s just so pretty.

If it’s for an Oscars after-party, I love it. If it’s for ATTENDING the Oscars, then I think it’s too informal. (But she still looks amazing in it either way).

I also love the hell out of this. The colour is amazing on her and it suits her so well. I find myself wondering who else could wear this as successfully and I’m coming up empty. I think this is absolutely her dress.

I love it. This dress is a first cousin to the white gown Shailene Woodley wore to the Oscars last year.

It’s a terrific style, a perfect fit, and she looks terrific in it. I voted “on the fence,” only because I’m not sure exactly how formal the Vanity Fair party was; this might or might not have been quite appropriate.

But I really love the look! Very elegant, and great color.

at first i thought she’d worn it to the actual oscars and for that i thought it was maybe not fancy enough. i’m on board as a party dress. i like the neckline. and yes my mother wore a version of this. my bet is that hers was not made of polyester double knit.

i mean leslie mann’s. my mother’s was definitely made of polyester doubleknit

Polyester doubleknit. Yes. Totally. I see this style and I instantly have a tactile reaction… Leslie looks great, the style totally is evocative of a terribly stylish pool party, and I don’t really mind it for the Oscars, but for some reason, I mostly think about how if I wore it, I’d have the most atrocious pit stains because in my mind, the fabric isn’t breathing.

Also, if I’m being totally honest, I don’t love the color. It’s not a bad color on her, I just don’t like it. And it’s so much. Would maybe have preferred it in a less intense hue. I’d probably choose it in a cream with multi-colored beading in turquoise, yellow, red, and orange.

Polyester doubleknit. Like a Sear’s leisure suit.

This would be such a cute summer dress if it was cut at mid-thigh!

I hate the sleeves. They are very 1970′s. Make them cap sleeves and I’m totally sold. The color is fabulous on her.

Oh, agreed. Now that I’m thinking about, I also think it would be better sans sleeves. I’d take them off completely and cut in a bit under the beading at the shoulders, a little bit like Cate B.’s absolutely divine lavender Givenchy from a couple years back.

Ugh. I must be A LOT older than everyone else on this site…this is giving me flashbacks of (now) hideous homecoming and prom dresses from way too long ago. That said, it fits her perfectly, so yay for that.

Total 70s. Color, sleeves, bodice detail and all. FUG for me. We’ve been cleaning out my mother’s sewing room and I swear I pulled out a Butterick paper pattern featuring this on the cover. I love a bit of retro but this isn’t it.

I love it. That color is awesome and it fits *perfectly.*

I would totally go to that pool party. And I would drink mai tais under the tiki torches and love every minute of it.

I’m not completely sold on the color but I am completely sold on the dress.

I was on the fence (mostly because I’m not sure it’s formal enough), but the comments sold me on it.

The fit is wonderful, the color is unexpected in a very nice way, so I’m choosing to call it retro, and very well done in that frame. She looks lovely.

It’s interesting and is tailored PERFECTLY. Maybe it’s just the wrong event.

On the one hand, not sure about the sleeves and it does seem a bit casual. On the other, it fits like a dream and it’s for an afterparty, not the Oscars ceremony.

Given that she gets 1000 bonus points for being in an actual color, that pushes it into the Amazing category.

I think it would have been a great choice for the BAFTAs (if she were at the BAFTAs) because they are FREEZING and it’s about time someone went for a dress that looks warm. I’m less sure about the Oscars. But it’s a great dress and it fits beautifully, which counts for a lot.

I love this and wish I could have a shorter version without the deep V to wear to work. I would rock it.
