Met Gala Best and Worst

Christina Ricci eked out a win in this year’s Best Dressed at the Met Gala battle, beating Sarah Jessica Parker by a mere 100 points;

Clap clap clap to her for having the foresight to pull out the Vivienne Westwood, and better luck next year to SJP. Better luck also to the woman who took home Worst Dressed in a LANDSLIDE:

I am actually starting to feel bad for KimKard, you guys. And it feels weird, all clammy and shaky and unpleasant.

It was those glove. Those freaky, irritating gloves. Oh, and the matching shoes.

Absolutely, the gloves. They took the look from dress to upholstery.

It was! Robin Williams was right when he said Mrs. Doubtfire “wore it better.”

Throw in the fact that she likes to pose cradling her “bump”, and when she does those gloves make her arms completely disappear. This picture is the perfect example: you can BARELY find her hands at all.

        +8

It makes her look like she’s wearing a floral straightjacket. Seriously, the first time I saw that picture I thought it WAS a straightjacket and was contemplating giving her props for an interesting take on ‘punk’ before I realized that they were just gloves.

I agree. In the first picture I saw of the dress, I sincerely could not find her arms. It was like Where’s Waldo, but arms. I think if there was some skin breaking up the pattern, it might have worked a lot better.

Dont feel too bad for KimKard. She’s the poster person for Things You Bring On Yourself.

Christina Ricci looked gorgeous, well done her.

  3. Rowynn

She would do herself SUCH a favor if she could get over the idea that everything she wears has to be skin tight. If pregnancy hasn’t cured her of that, though, I fear nothing will.

Christina looks great, but I couldn’t give such lopsided boob coverage the win. I gave it to Haillee (Uma was my #2)

    • Helen
      +5

I voted Hailee, too. I thought Ricci or Parker would probably take it, but I still say Steinfeld was the best-dressed, for me. Not only did she look great, it was just such a fun concept!

COURAGE! Don’t let the pregnancy block out the fact that K-Kard has mirrors, looks in those mirrors, and still walks out the door. She is responsible for the way she looks and dresses.

An unholy genetically engineered crossbreed of duck-hunting camouflage, oven mitt, wound dressing, lobster claw, and a sofa that should have been given to Goodwill long ago.

In other words, Kim is wearing Duck Dynasty + Top Chef + The Swan + Deadliest Catch + Hoarders. Plus, What Not To Wear. Obv.

Thanks to The Soup, I actually got that. I hope Joel McHale does that FOREVER.

Ouch, did someone already make this joke on The Soup? I thought I made it up all by myself.

I mean that I know that the shows exist, and have some idea what they show, because of watching The Soup. Otherwise that would’ve been so much Greek to me!

Well, I’d say they both earned it. Though it wasn’t my own favorite of the evening, major points to Ricco for the pattern and the deconstructionism, which both worked thematically – and the good sense to choose Westwood! – and of course the fishnets. Also, she herself looked just beautiful. That styling is great on her.

And no one needs to feel bad for Kim K, y’all. She chooses to go out and be photographed, looking like she chooses to look, on a daily or near-daily basis. She asked for this attention, she continues to ask for it, and she decides what she wears. Everything she gets, she does to herself.

*Ricci, not Ricco. Honestly, I do know her name, it’s just early here and I’m on my first cup of coffee.

Although now I have a nice beach vacation fantasy going, with a cute amenities attendant named Ricco…

Man, I hated Beyonce’s outfit worse than K Krard, what with the boots and gloves and strangulated boobage and all. Way. Worse. (not that Kim looks fab, but she looks kinda innocuous to me here. Bey’s was aggressively fug.)

It’s like in Gone With the Wind where you can’t do anything to remotely hint that you are pregnant, it’s indelicate to mention the word even, and everyone must pretend that nothing has changed about you at all, regardless of how big your belly is, and yet you must be so mindful and cautious because who knows, maybe you’ll see someone fall off a horse and it will make you miscarry.

    • Edith

I thought she saw someone fall off a horse, and then tumbled down the grand staircase while having a screaming fight with her husband?

Apparently Anna Wintour picked this out for her! If so, this is what I call paying your dues. She better get a cover!

    • Chris P

      Anna Wintour picked whose outfit?

Either or would make a shitton of sense.

      • elinor
        0

Wintour has very little design sense. She rarely dresses well. No interest in simple elegance. She and the former model with the wild red hair (what’s her name?) have destroyed the look of the magazine, and promoted a lot of fussy junk. Remember what she did at House and Garden before moving on to Vogue. Fugging disaster.

        • Chris P
          +1

I was more referencing that while Anna’s feelings for Christina Ricci are probably not that well-known, it’s EXTREMELY public how she feels about Kim Kardashian. And I’m fairly sure she’s fonder of Christina than Kim, as the former has never been publicly not invited to the Costume Institute Gala, nor has she only been let in the door as a plus-one to another attendee.

    SJP GOT ROBBED, Y’ALL.

Actually, I don’t think any of my top 3 did all that well – SJP, Madonna, or Miley. (I embraced the ugly this year.) I mean, I’m not going to deny that C. Ric’s dress is pretty, but it was too wearable for me. (That is, she still looks somewhat insane. Also, she never got any part of her ensemble felt up by Jennifer Lawrence and she did not Instagram herself doing housework in that thing, so those were also points against her.)

To be honest, I’d say even Hailee Steinfeld had a better dress (or at least a more memorable one) – because it just looks all frou-frou and then SUDDENLY HARDCORE.)

      I’m with you, Chris P!

    • Chris P

Err…the note on Christina Ricci’s dress should have been, “she still looks somewhat sane.” She does look slightly insane (it’s like a bright blue plaid can-can dress), but that’s not the point I was trying to make.

Kardashian deserves no pity at all. She’s been parading herself around for years now solely for attention, her horrible classless taste has never improved, and she’s never done anything that wasn’t completely self-serving, including becoming pregnant. Same as it ever was, as Talking Heads once sang.

She earned this “award,” as well as all the derision and scorn heaped upon her. And don’t you just feel sorry for that baby, to paraphrase Mary Jo Shively.

  13. Lori
    +5

You know, the best picture I’ve seen of Kim K during her pregnancy is the one currently on the cover of something or other in which she is in a bikini. I think it’s because the bikini is just so simple and not trying to hard. I just don’t know why she feels she has to try SO hard all the time.

  14. nmlhats

I had to take points off Ricci becausethe bodice does not fit her properly (or she at least needs to pull it up). We can’t ignore a poor fit when making these judgments! I mean, it’s not “which dress we liked best” but rather “best-dressed person.”

CRicci was very, very close 1st place for me, but I chose Anne Hathaway for of her total look, especially with the blond hair. Although KimK’s upholstered look was bad, nothing topped the hideous gown that Allison Williams sported.

I’m glad SJP did not win. I thought the headdress was a cop-out; if she wanted a mohawk or a faux hawk, she could have done easily done it (see Sanjaya from AI many seasons ago).

Also, don’t feel bad for KimK, I am pretty sure she is celebrating her worst of the night status. For her and her family (and those of that ilk), there is no such thing as bad press.

    • likeitis
      +8

Why is a cool headdress a cop out? Why is a Phillip Treacy headdress any less punk than doing a fake one with your hair? I don’t understand your POV. I think SJP’s intention was to take the elements, tropes, and iconography of punk and interpret them through a couture lens. You can fault that attempt for its subversion of everything punk stands for, but making a “Sanjaya” fake mohawk sounds pretty damn lame to me.

      • NCY
        +1

Hey, don’t get your knickers in a twist. I would have loved that Phillip Treacy headdress on her at the Kentucky Derby, that would have been a knockout. But the headdress is just so Vegas showgirl or gladiator to me, not punk. I only brought up Sanjaya because he came to mind since he had long hair and pulled/carried off a faux hawk. If she wanted a faux hawk, I think she could have done much better with her own hair, especially with the resources she has at her disposal. The boots were awesome, the dress was so-so.

    • Esme
      +1

I thought SJB looked way too costumey–too many elements thrown together, not making any sense. I would have liked to see the boots with something else (and lose that Rooster-head thing).

    • Chris P
      +5

Honestly, I think the headdress was more of a couture move than anything – so I’m actually counting that as a point FOR her.

Okay, I stayed mum all last week, but now I will say it:

I don’t hate what Kim Kardashian is wearing.

I don’t think it was right for the event, especially given the theme, and I *hate* the rumors that her stylist insisted she cover her arms and thus sleeves were added at the last minute. Also, I hate the fugly shape of the shoe.

BUT I’m kind of in love with the idea of going that balls to the wall with a print, especially with the optical illusion of her hands disappearing entirely. It’s weird, and interesting, and kind of cool in a clothes-as-performance-art way. It’s just really jarring because that is not Kim Kardashian’s modus operandi, and so we all just assume it was, what, a mistake? She didn’t know her hands would disappear? Surely she did. I actually have more of a problem with the height of the slit than with the gloves.

Also, that print is LOVELY. Roses can look so fugly on fabric, and they don’t here. And the coloring is fabulous on her, and her face looks amazing. So there. I do not like Kim Kardashian. I do not like what she represents in our culture. But this was an interesting thing she wore, not a monstrosity (and she’s worn PLENTY of those).

Kirsten Stewart was ROBBED. ROBBED, I say!

    • Pam
      +2

Agree! I thought she looked pretty. And the all over print seems to be a thing in fashion, so I don’t see why she is getting hate for that. I realize that she got famous for a sex tape, but we have forgiven others in Hollywood for worse. Drug addicts, adulterers, wife beaters, child molesters. I don’t watch her show so maybe some one would explain to me just what it is about her that makes people hate her so much.

      • Esme

Just watch in ONCE, then come back and report. I reckon you may have changed your mind.

I more or less agree with you, Edith, and i stood up for KK on the original post of the dress…a vast improvement over the usual from her…maybe lower the slit…but i thought she looked…gasp…very pretty. There, i said it. But i still think she is mostly a painful fashion wreck and publicity whore.

      • Edith
        +1

Oh, she’s loathsome, and usually dresses AWFULLY. This just is kind of interesting, and certainly no where near as bad as what KStew and Allison Williams wore – and MUCH better than most of what she’s worn, EVER.

    • Andrea

I could have worked with the dress if it wasn’t a turtleneck, had a sleeveless collar thing going, no gloves and non-matching shoes. Imagine it sleeveless with a bit of cleavage and I think it would have looked lovely. It’s what was done to it that ruined it. Not to mention I really hated her non-hairdo, she has really lovely hair however it’s obtained (and now I sound like my mum) and she should take full advantage of it. Strapless dress with beautiful loose hair flowing down her back? Total winner for me.

I’m actually starting to have empathy for K.K. I understand that people don’t like her, but there is a certain meanness to it all. So, this site, has me rooting for her more often than not in terms of her fashion getting better. Also, I think her pregnancy must make it very difficult to be judged these days. Yes, she is known for her fashion or lack thereof, but it does not mean it is not difficult to be judged for not being fashionable while you are growing by leaps and bounds because you are having a baby. I don’t buy the argument that she brought it (the right to be judged harshly) on herself either. Being famous for a sex tape and, well, for being famous and selling your beauty may be shallow, but I still see her as a human being.

    • Helen

Dude she calls the paparazzi every day to tell them where she’ll be.

I would put Ricci on the worst dressed list also. The dress is ugly, a d it’s sliding off her body! Her left you know what is barely even covered. How is that best dressed? Yikes.

There is nothing good about this print – the colors suck and it’s far too busy. The gloves just add insult to injury.
