Fug the Show: Hart of Dixie recap, episode 302

Which prompted Heather to type words that I never anticipated reading, ever: “Meatball is really great in this episode.” The thing is, Meatball is really great in this episode. Meatball was also great in the episode where he and Wade were in a band called MIND FACE. Maybe Meatball is just great, period.

Ok I’ve read through the whole post now. I think it’s sad how they totally obliterated any chance of Lemon being able to date Carter Covington since he’s basically a male Lemon. He would have been great endgame for her :(

Zoe’s jacket at the end is amazing.

Also, even though HNW has come a long way since the beginning of the show, he still has a reputation of being an ambition-less womanizer; it was really only when he started dating Zoe that he started to become more respectable. This is why he is considered largely undateable.

But I feel like, people would realistically be, “this is a bad idea….BUT I FEEL YOU.” Because Wade is hot, AND also he owns the bar now? I mean, I know what you’re saying — and I think that’s what the show is saying — but it seems weird to me that no one has pointed out that one really good reason for Lemon to be dating Wade is that he’s sexy? You know?

          +7

that was probably my favorite moment on this episode, Joel commenting on Wade’s guns.. and i was like, “Duh, he’s Hot Neighbor Wade, don’t you know?”

I guess it’s not really Lemon’s style to date someone simply bc they’re hot? She always seems like she’s looking for The One, though the whole fling with Meatball suggests temporary insanity, possibly brought on by the stress of working (with Wade?). Also Lemon’s type is “southern gentleman” (Lavon, George, Carter, that dentist dude?) and she’s also known Wade her whole life, and dating him is almost like dating her brother.

I think what I’m saying is:
          Zoe + Wade: understandable.
Lemon + Wade: makes no sense even for a fling.
Lemon + some other random hot guy: not that unexpected.

Wade is this show’s Tim Riggins. No matter how well intentioned WE know they are, in their universe they will not be regarded as good partners for well mannered girls.

I want you to know I have work to do…but this was way way more important. TEAM MEATBALL

Last week I thought LemonBall was a product of the old soap opera problem of trying to put together a couple who had not slept together before and were not related and not casting any new characters – resulting in unworkable combinations. But after this week? TEAM MEATBALL it is.

Also, these recaps make me sad I never watched PASSIONS.

I actually watched Passions and am sad I watched Passions. I used to TAPE IT! Like with a VCR!

NO. Passions was AWESOME. I once got a ticket for running a red light….BECAUSE I WAS RACING HOME TO WATCH PASSIONS. The cop was not amused.

I used to tape it on the days I couldn’t come home to my dorm between classes to watch it with my BFF. We actually taped it on those days too, just in case something awesome happened that required rewinding. And I saved the ones with good Sheridan/Luis Lopez-Fitzgerald moments. For her birthday, I made a Shuis compilation tape, which required the use of two VCRS, and a lot of practice hitting “play” and “record” simultaneously. The days before internet video were dark and difficult.

LemonBall. Tee hee. Perfect for my level of humor this morning.

Is it just me, or are they doing a really bad (so bad it’s funny) job of disguising Jaime King’s pregnancy?

I don’t know what else they could do. Her boobs really blew up but they can’t show her from the neck up in every shot.

Am I the only one who’s been a little annoyed by Zoe this season? I don’t know what it is, but in the first two episodes, I feel like I’ve been saying “ugh, shut up Zoe!” a lot at the tv.

Also….is the the longest the show has gone with Wade be-shirted? If so, I do not like it.

    • marie
      +1

Personally, I hated her exchanging “I love you’s” with Joel. also, they’ve been together for just 5 months(?) and they’re now buying an apartment? It’s like everything that happened between her and Wade during the Season finale didn’t happen.

This doesn’t bother me so much. I think being in NYC made Bluebell and Wade very “out of sight, out of mind” for Zoe, and it’s very easy to fall back into old patterns. I could see her meeting someone in NYC, and convincing herself that’s where she should be and who she should build her life with. Plus, she and Wade were broken up for the end of last season. No amount of chasing her down and saying “I love you” negates the cheating.

Joel is supposed to be a sensible adult guy (right?) but what sensible adult guy is like, “You think your EX-BOYFRIEND and your sometimes-nemesis are faking their relationship. I don’t wonder why you care so much, or if you might still be hung up on him, I just want to help you sleuth around, even though I just almost died”? This episode was mostly hilarious, though, with George Tucker’s Shaun Cassidy hair, and “we’re plotting, not eating,” and Meatball.

    Also, Lynly suuuuuuuuucks.

I took it to mean that he’s secure in Zoe’s feelings and he’s a good guy.

I like Joel as a character, but I think there’s very little chemistry between the actor and Rachel Bilson. I will, however, be sad when he inevitably realizes that Zoe is not yet over Wade, and probably never will, and so he returns to New York with a broken heart. And then I’ll be excited when Zoe discovers that his new novel, a best-seller, is basically a roman a clef about their failed relationship, and is hurt that Joel thinks she never truly loved him. And then I will have additional positive feelings about how the success of the novel has turned Bluebell into a literary tourism destination, which perhaps makes the townspeople grumpy until Lavon realizes this is something they can lord over the neighboring town that I forget the name of, because I like a one-sided fictional feud, and I really do love the quirky townsfolk of Bluebell.

I REALLY loved the part with Cricket and her husband! The “what’s a beard?” line was so hilarious to me. Plus, I think that dress she wore is from Anthro.

I loved Ryan McPartlin in Chuck and the Fran Drescher show where he was her boytoy, but he does always play hot innocent guy. I kinda want him to come back as a serial killer who garrottes Wanda with al dente pasta just to give the actor a bit of a stretch. And also that would get rid of Wanda…

I’m just gonna refer back to this line from now on when I need cheering up:

“WTF YOU GUYS. First the Letterman Dumpster disappears and now Lavon has no goddamned kitchen pastry I hate everyone. ”

Also, Passions references are my next favorite thing after 90210 and English Countryside Weekend House Party asides. Basically I just loved this recap, is what I’m saying.

Love your Fugcaps and for getting me to watch Hart of Dixie!
I really appreciate how they make sure that almost no character on the show becomes the bad guy (especially with Joel – they could have easily made him a drip or a jerk). With the George and Linly, Lemonade and Meatball developments it’s pretty much become hookup musical chairs, so we’ll just have to see who’s together when the music stops. Good thing they do all this in cute clothes and charm.

Does the fact that HoD doesn’t have any real vilains make me happy means I’m a shallow person? Because I swear this show really relaxes me everytime. I mean I love shows like GoT but damn it, HoD is my happy place (or TV).

      • Lizzy
        +6

        Exactly!
It’s like watching cute puppy videos. With everything becoming so darn gritty (I love GoT, too, and Justified, and Walking dead…) it’s a breath of fresh air. Ooh, look, abs! Cute dresses! Another town celebration that involves period costumes!

That is completely sensible. My other shows are GoT, Justified, and I’m catching up with Breaking Bad. I love and need HoD for it’s lightness. That and Parks & Rec are the soothing balm to the anxiety and heartbreak of my TV schedule.

I realize much of the costuming for this show involves a highly stylized retro-50s thing but every time I watch this show, I want to throw out all of my clothing, fill my closet with very colourful day dresses and invest in a good set of hot rollers.

Did I miss something, or has no one realized that Zoe no longer has a job in Bluebell?!? Matheson took over the doc’s office. I’m really glad that Zoe’s back in Bluebell, but where is she going to work?

    • Jessica

Oh, I feel like she will be back at work there by two episodes from now.

Love these recaps…and I’m surprised by how ‘Team Meatball” I’ve become.
Also, it might have just been me, but did anyone detect a bit of wistfulness from Lemon after her talk with Wade? I saw a hint of staring off into the distance, possibly pondering Wade’s hotness…

I am a lawyer, and I was like, “Uh, Lavon? If you know Lynly is a terrible student, why are you encouraging her to go to law school?” (Also, there is no reason a lawyer who’s been practicing awhile would remember anything about the LSAT.)

Poorly thought out ruses aside, I still love this show.

    • gin_in_teacups

I thought the same. I’ve never taken the LSAT but isn’t it similar to the GRE in that they’re testing for certain basic skills and reasoning? Just because I went to grad school doesn’t make me qualified to tutor someone for the GRE and I figure that’s got to be the same with lawyers/LSAT.

I’ve always loved you, but now sooooo much. So many of my favorite things here on GFY! I first discovered Hart of Dixie last June, while in the hospital on some very potent pain relievers and fell in love. I had heard about it before, but thought it would be stupid. Spurred on by those potent pain relievers, I became a HOD fan and have been watching it ever since… including the viewing the first season on Netflix and buying the second on Amazon. Watching Zoe in those shorts made me think of you <3. Anyway, I always love your recaps. I started through today's slideshow before work, but had to leave (damn this making a living thing). Came home and finished it about 10 hours later. So worth it! I love to hear both snarky and appreciative comments (especially at the same time!) Thank you so much for your efforts in this area. You made my day!

I rather like Joel too, and agree that he and Zoe don’t have boy/girl chemistry…but wouldn’t he and Lemon be great together? They would fall into each other’s commiserating arms after Zoe & Wade inevitably accidentally end up in bed together…they would be really cute.

However, I do think Lemonade is getting some sugar (whaaaat!?) before it’s over.
