Emmy Awards Fug Carpet: Heather Morris

When I first saw this, as Heather Morris wandered past the E! cameras aimlessly, I thought it might be cute. But now that I’m really looking at it:

I just said, “I…don’t….know” really slowly to my lap top.  Heather and I just had a whole discussion about which part of this we kept talking ourselves out of liking: I don’t like the skirt, she doesn’t like the top, and between the two of us, that makes a whole outfit we really don’t like. In the final analysis, while I appreciate what she’s going for here, I kind of think she looks like one giant formal Hershey’s kiss. Which is delicious to eat, but perhaps not so much to wear.

For some reason, the whole thing makes her head look teeny-tiny.

I like the color, and that is all.

Even though the hair is completely nuts, whenever I look at it my eyes are drawn again down to the grand abstract staircase/choppy sea that is the rest of the dress. The neckline points to it and then it’s like, whooooosh, I’m lost in the skirt again.

And is she only wearing one earring? Is that on purpose?

I like the color and shape of this, and even her very-high hair and make-up… but I think the ruffles need to be different. They look cheap and messy, somehow, like they belong on an amusement park princess costume that has been worn too many times.

The color is gorgeous on her, and I agree with Jessica about the general shape. But holy craptastic, Batman–I think I designed this dress for my Barbie when I was seven. So many directions of ugly!

One earring was Melissa on “Thirtysomething”.
She is bringing this look back because?
The dress is Barbie, the hair is Barbie,
I’ll assume she has on Barbie shoes as well.

I give her props for being interesting and taking a risk. Yes to the color, but also, yes, I’m not sure about the execution. I have a feeling that this was something that looked a lot better on paper. I think if the ruffles were a bit longer? Perhaps? And a bit more drape-y (you know what I mean) it might have been better. Finally, the one earring (or one post and one dangle earring) is, at best, a casual look, not a red carpet look.

I…like this? Maybe it’s the color I’m responding to or the adorable pictures with her and Martin Scorsese (random!), but I think the look was a lot more flattering in different angles. She’s certainly worn worse, so I’ll grade on a curve.

Oh, and she’s actually wearing both earrings on the same ear. Heather’s a quirky one.

I saw this and cackled. Heather is a dear, but she looks mentally bereft in this shot. And the hair needed to be down. A nice slicked back ponytail would have helped things a lot to tone down all the RUFFLEYNESS happening.

it’s the both earrings on the same ear (thanks, Chris) that sold me. way to go, Heather. when it was just one earring, i wasn’t a fan of any of it. now, though – i dig it.

Something about this just reminds me of the Harlequin Demon from The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Nice color, but this monstrosity lost its way in the process from sketch to dress.

I actually really like this dress!! It’s the bride of frankenstein hair I take issue with. Real issue.

@zah – Same here! The double-earring makes me love this. Girl’s got her own style, that’s for sure. And I’ll say this about Heather – she’s never boring. This looks better in motion, but I’m in.

but she looks very pretty( facewise). she is pulling off the bubblegum pop princess makeup

The look on her face says it all: “This isn’t really working, is it? And I can’t move a muscle for fear of boob-tape failure.”

This is precisely what I imagine Phoebe Buffay would look like if she went to the Emmys.

I think if it had gone straight instead of expanding and if the ruffles had not grown so much it would have been nice. Also if she had not looked like a deer in headlights in her expression.

I like the skirt a lot, but the whole thing seems too big on her…she is tall and lean this shouldn’t be making her look boxy

  21. Jennifer

I think this is a classic case of the dress wearing the woman instead of other way around.

The ruffles go too far up the skirt. They should get smaller and stop at the top-of-the-thigh region, and then just be sleek and black (navy?) up top. Also: I suspect that under all those ruffles, this really doesn’t fit all that well.

  23. Claire L

I love love love ruffles… but this is just too much. Maybe with a simple bodice….maybe a tad shorter….. I don’t know…it feels like there was a fabulous idea and some whack-a-doo execution.
I don’t like her hair at all.

The hair bothers me more than the dress–it’s far too fussy. If she’d worn is down and sleek, so it wasn’t competing with the dress, she might have pulled it off.

  28. Chelsea

I’m going to be honest with you, this was my favorite dress of the night. Apparently I’m insane. Maybe I should go get that checked out.

I’m glad at least a few other people loved this dress like I did… I was starting to feel ashamed for disagreeing with the Powers that Fug. With so many boring dresses wandering around, this one stood out in a good way for me.

From the top of the terrible hair to the bottom of that waves of ruffles skirt it is a nightmare! She looks like a a Western bar maid. Yeah, Miss Kitty’s younger clueless sister on Gunsmoke. Feh.

I liked it too – I also thought it was clever that her hair echoed the ruffles in the dress. Granted, not a good look for every day, but I thought it worked here. Ah well, you know what they say about opinions … as in, we all have one.

  32. vandalfan

Her hair is just stupid looking, plain idiotic. We are NOT amused.

I’m with LG, the skirt’s fine, have the ruffles begin at the hip, not the waist, make the top a plain dark tank top, and Bob’s your uncle.

  33. CH

Yeah, this is not working. I like the neckline, and I think a ruffleless version of this with the same (non-frilled) silhouette could have been nice, but it’s trying to be way too many things at once.

While this is terrible, let’s talk about how AWESOME Naya Rivera looked.

I’m with Jennifer. I like the dress (amazingly, since it’s so not my normal style), and it fits Heather well, but, as TLo would say, this isn’t *her* dress. She looks really unsure of it, and if you’re going to wear something like that you have to own it.

  35. Sajorina

This could’ve been a great dress! I like the top of the dress and if it had been paired with a simple skirt in the dark blue fabric and just left the flowy ruffles in the other fabric on the top…. it would’ve been gorgeous! So, the skirt makes it FUG! Like the makeup, hate the hairdo!

  36. Daffodil

I think if you subtract the tall hair and de-ruffle/smooth out the section over her hips, you’d have success. I actually kind of dig the top and the bottom of the dress, just not how they’re joined. And the tall hair just looks weird with So Much Dress.

Completely disagree with you. Hershey’s kisses are not delicious to eat, they taste like sick. Get some real chocolate, America!

  38. Jen

She looks 2-dimensional…like the dress and her don’t exist on the same plane of reality, and they are just overlapping briefly.

  39. Leone

This just doesn’t suit her at all, but at least it’s not boring. And that hair. OMG! No, sweetie.

I love the color, love the fit, love the way it flatters her body, of which I am jealous, HOWEVER, something about this unfortunate gown makes me want to run my car through a car wash… can’t put my finger on it, though… Yeah… gotta go take the car to an automatic car wash this week.

I kind of actually love this. It does seem that the expanse of chest showing is unending, yet not revealing. Which isn’t so much of a good thing, but I think the dress is beautiful on her.

  43. LibraryChick

The expanse of chest turns a potentially fun dress into something less attractive. How can a dress try to hard to be va-va-va-voom while simultaneously making it look like her va-va-va-voom got up and left during a commercial break? Forget Barbie, this reminds me more of relatively flat-chested little sister Skipper. I really do find the skirt fascinating. I’m also relieved she didn’t wear this in white, or I would have confused her with one of those Swiffer dusters.

All I see is a tropical carnivorous plant whose jaws are about to devour her shoulders. What really turned me off on this dress is when I saw her walking on the red carpet and the skirt did not move with her gracefully. Good color on her, tho.

I am proudly with the weirdos who love this dress. LOVE IT.

  46. Miranda

Something about the dress with the hair and, I think, some aspect of the photograph itself, makes her look slightly unreal. In a limp sort of way. Like, she’s a sea goddess on the back of a Magic: The Gathering card, but she only has +5 Wave Strike Power or something because, I don’t know, her stylist neglected to bung a bracelet on her.

  47. Jules

    I love it!
It brings to mind “Magic Eye” pictures, and fractals.
Like it was designed by a computer.
This is 2011 people! In my opinion, fashion designers aren’t pushing hard enough.

  48. Matilda

She looks like my Barbie doll in one of my grandmother’s handmade dresses. Which was fine in the 1970s but not in real on the red carpet in 2011.

I actually like the skirt just the way it is, although you have to be small of hip (as Heather is) in order to make it work. Apparently, however, I am just not a fan of the plunging V-neck — I didn’t like it on Julie Bowen; I don’t like it on Heather. I’m with Jennifer in thinking the dress is wearing her rather than the other way around. As for the hair… redonkulous.
