Well Played, Christina Hendricks

well-played
There’s something about the shape of this dress that I love:
Maybe I’m nuts, but the whole thing looks kissed by the wind — like she just drifted over from someplace fabulous, and the air around her smells like dark chocolate and flowers, and then just like that she’ll be gone again to some other fabulous place and you’ll be left wondering if you imagined the buxom redhead with the tiny waist who made you want to wear sunscreen three times a day for the rest of your life.
Bonus: It FITS. Flights of angels are dusting off their trumpets right now in preparation for a rousing round of alleluias.

The dress itself is nice. The fabric’s a little Hefty, Hefty, Hefty baggish, though.

Soon as I saw this in the paper this morning, I thought, ‘Oooh, I hope the Fug Girls are pleased.’ She looks like a beautiful doll: tiny waist, girls safely contained, make-up gun set at a discreet level, simple hair.

I am like that Muppety man in the background: smiling broadly. JoanIloveyoucallme!

She is one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood. Her face is so innocent looking and her body is so lush. Redheads look wonderful in black but even when her dress is a miss, I am fascinated by her.

It does fit, but I can’t get past the hem on that second layer. Way too stiff and, yes, Hefty-bag-ish as the first poster said. A different fabric and perhaps color, and take that wire out of the hem, and I’d be in.

PS: I’m not too crazy about that belt, either.

I love her!!! She usually does pretty well at big red carpet events, if I recall correcty. I love that she doesn’t resort to “pinup” on carpets like she does in photo shoots.

I love this dress. I kinda wish it wasn’t black, but it is so flattering and interesting on her that I can get past it. I also love that she’s toned down the makeup and her hair looks great, too.

I support the Hefty bag fabric. I like the color but a little softer or a little less.

But my major, although even this is minor, problem is with the upsweep on her left. I think it goes a little far, maybe shave it back by an inch or two.

    RE: BELT

My first impression of this dress was, “BELT?”. I’m not sure what the designer (Christian Siriano, they must be friends because she wears a lot of his stuff) was hoping to achieve; something to off set the wind blown effect? something to show off her waist?
    It confuses…

  8. Valentina

Too much layers! although it does fit. She should stick with Christian Siriano, just like Meryl with Chris March.

Her face looks so beautiful there, who knew she was even wearing a dress?

I feel so bland in comparison.

her outfit, especially the bottom part of the dress somehow reminds me of the Batman attire hehe, perhaps the designer extracted the concept from that =P

it looooks cool! i love it!

She looks really tall! I love the top half, until the belt. The belt looks like a seatbelt. I just can’t bring myself to love the rest of the dress, its like the Wicked Witch of the West put her raincoat on backwards. (Not that I think Christina is a witch)

  12. Rayna
    0

Hooray! Magnificent Christina deserves a magnificent dress, and this is VERY nearly it.

Alas, have to agree with the oyveying vis a vis belt and Heftyish tendencies, though.

Another color, or a softer fabric in black, would eliminate 1/2 of that……….

But still, my first reaction was, now THAT’S how you do that neckline!

  13. Kathy
    0

Like the belt, like the color, love the hair and make-up…HATE the left-shoulder “swoosh”. I think it would have been perfect with continuing the neckline into wide-ish straps instead. She looks great, though, overall. Good for the curvy girl!

  14. Kristen

Love the hair, love the makeup, hate the material of the dress, and the second layer is way too much.

  15. Helena
    0

I would love to see this in a deep midnight blue on her…the black is a little flat and takes away from the heavenly sweep of it all. I would have foregone the belt too, but overall I love the design, absolutely divine.

I think something a little more dramatic, up-do-y could have been done with her hair as well, to match the grandeur of the curves below, it falls flat for me.

  16. testington

I just don’t like the bottom of the dress, the tiered hemline doesn’t work with the fabric…but everything from there up looks fab, and I like this hair on here it is done looking but not too fussy.

Paint her green, give her a pointy hat and we have a new Elphie.

I love her & I love the design & idea of the dress. But, my first thought was “I bet her lower half is sweating like crazy!”. It looks like it would be so hot under all that heavy (looking) black fabric.

  19. Cattie

I don’t think she suits black! I think it would have looked fab in forest green or a deep inky purple. The shape is wicked though.

She looks like Batman, or possible like she’s going to team up with Batman and fight crime.

I really can’t argue with that.

My senior year of highschool I wore a black dress to prom. I was worried I was going to spill dinner all down the front of me so my mother jokingly wrapped a black trash bag around my waist and told me to have fun. The apron looking thing reminds me of the picture we took. Of course shes way hotter than me.

    And I LOVE the belt.

I thought the hair could’ve been better, but I love everything else. Great dress. I want to take a bite out of her shoulder, her skin looks so yummy.

ARE YOU KIDDING?!?! Hello, has someone swapped with Fug Girls?
The lady is beautiful, the dress maybe wouldn’t be bad if it was in a different coulour or if is was worn in the evening, as it is an evening dress. But it doesn’t matter, cos the dress has a look’n’feel of something made from material left after the dismantlement of huge umbrellas. I’ve got one (sans flounce though) and its material has the same colour, stiffness and semi-matte sheen. And it doesn’t look like a rainy day. On the other hand such a dressella might be very practical in case it suddenly started to rain.

If she had just used color it would have been gorgeous. The black is a little too funereal.

  26. KK
    0

Huh. I hate it. Her face, obviously, is as gorgeous as ever. But the color is too dark for her skin tone, the best doesn’t o with the dress, and that draping shit just looks as though there was soo much fabric so the designer bunched it up. I think the dress is hideous.

  27. Sandra

Too much going on. Girlfriend has a curvy figure so she doesn’t need to put wings on shoulder and hips. The whole thing is a little too architectural for my taste. Ditch the Lawn ‘n Leaf bag she tied around her waist and I think the straight black underskirt would look fine with the top.

  28. Fuh Ugh

I’m with @Mina – I was going to say give her a broom and a pointy hat and she is set to go. Now I realize that a green cast to her skin and red and white striped stockings would REALLY make this pop.

That’s a whole lotta dress. No mere mortal could carry it off, but herself wears it beautifully. I LOVE the belt, but dislike the left boob-wing. It could also have worked in a jewel tone, or maybe even a pastel.

Shape and cut are EXCELLENT, but I was all ready for a hefty-bag reference…it does look light, light enough to be windbreaker nylon…is that the secret?

  35. emster

Very fond of it all, but the dress would have been better in chocolate (or green, but that’s so obvious for a redhead).

  36. Amy

She looks like she borrowed the dress from Bette Midler’s character in Witches, and while I like the hairstyle, the dark roots are disconcerting.

I think she looks incredible, but would it have killed her to wear something a little more summery? She must be DYING in that thing.

  39. Veronica
    0

There’s a heaviness to the material of the dress, but I wouldn’t quite say I dislike the black either. It may just be the contrast of the dress to the summery feel of the photo. Otherwise, I really like the construction of it. I’d love to see her whip out a few more of these winners more often. She’s got a certain flair about her that makes dramatic designs stand out.

Your comment about dark chocolate made me realize how much better this would have been in that color (someone needs to send a memo to all redheads that all-black is rarely going to work for them), but I still like it a lot. And now I need to go locate some dark chocolate . . .

I cannot stand Christina Hendricks. I’m sick of hearing about how she’s curvy and it’s so great that Hollywood is embracing her as she is, but the fact is that she clearly has gotten implants (bad ones too), and is therefore fake curvy. She’s like a blow to real curvy women out there.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.
