Well Played, Rachel McAdams

Usually I don’t go for the keyhole dresses, but I think this looks great on her:

I think it’s because it’s fitted well, so everything is divinely wrangled in it. But it MIGHT be because the bodice makes a giant W, and it’s exerting mind control and subconscious suggestion to convince me to call it a Win and Wonderful and Well Played and Wow and WHEEEE and all manner of other complimentary Ws. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go watch reruns of Will & Grace and listen to the Wicked soundtrack and buy a bunch of wigs and join Weight Watchers and wink at people and eat a Whatchamacallit. For no reason.

Darn it. Now I want a Whatchamacalit.

  2. Sandra

There is a whiff of eau-de-free-dance-to-Mahler’s-Requiem about this, but she’s pulling it off.

  3. Amalia

I don’t mind the keyhole whatchamacallit, but I would like to see it a couple inches shorter (just grazing the knee) and with different, non-Mary Jane shoes. But, as always with her, great headsuit!

    • Amalia

Oops, I meant a couple inches LONGER.

      • HelenBackAgain

That might help? I dunno, I think it’s making her look lumpy in general.

        Not a fan.

      • Claire1

I’m with you. It’s too short. Not scary short, just a bit too short.

      • Lisa

I concur. Too short, don’t find it flattering at all.

      • anne p.

Yep, the too-short hemline throws the proportions out of whack and gives the parts that boxy look we’re lamenting.
And agree with other comments about the shoes — it’s almost as if she realized the skirt was too short and “solved” the too-much-leg problem with a mary jane strap.

  4. Fawn

I think it could use better shoes, but YAY for bracelets and cute dresses!!!

  5. Maria L.

I don’t think the top and bottom go together. The top has the makings of something sophisticated and the bottom is perky tap dancer. And the proportions seem off.

    • Big Noise

OMG, now that you say “perky tap dancer” — all I can picture is Betty White and Rue McClanahan doing that tap dance routine in The Golden Girls, and Betty had a similar cut skirt!

  6. Katie

I also would like to lengthen it just a bit. I think it’s too short, which throws everything off.

  7. Brenna

This looks odd on her to me – I think it makes her look incredibly short waisted. The skirt just doesn’t look right to me.

  8. Dizee

Oh, gracious, no. Entirely too short-waisted and the skirt ends at an unflattering part of her thigh. Add the cutouts, and the overall effect is a futuristic cocktail waitress from a Gothic water park called Wasteworld.

That face is, as always, lovely and charming.

  9. Me

I don’t like it either. It might look better if it were a bit longer but I’m not sure that would save it. In summary…YUCK.

  10. Jill

I think the dress is great but her hair color isn’t quite working with her natural gorgeousness. It washes her out. Also I cannot be the only one who thinks these Justin Bieber ads are hilarious, especially given his horrible fuggery lately.

  11.  tigers4us

Don’t care for this at all.

  12. CBD

I also think this is really bad. However, everything bad about it would be fixed if the straps on the shoes were higher on her ankles. It’d turn the entire look from “clumsy tap dancer with cankles” to “sexy sophisticate with and edge.”

    • Susan

Seriously, cankles? I don’t see it. I see distinct tapering from a calf into an appropriately tiny stretch of ankle area. And actually, it always seems to me that higher straps (on the ankle) are cankle-inducing, not those that are lower/ on the top of the feet.

      • Magatha

Really, she does not have cankles. Her legs are lovely. But the shoes are conspiring to make her look like she does. Mean old shoes.

  13. Esme

She looks like she’s wearing a kid’s dress. The shoes definitely don’t work.

  14. Claire1

I think the thing is….from the waist up it’s kind of artsy and interesting. From the waist down it’s school girlish….and it looks like it’s made for someone much shorter than she.

  15. Bella

    Nope. Too short.

  16. Bridesmaid Designers

Really quite stunning. I love thinking about where designers might get some of their inspiration, love it. Designer Bridesmaid Dresses 2013

  17. Anne

I’m sorry, but I cannot see this anything but an homage to the Sesame Street skits where letters would walk around, operated by unseen muppetteers.

  18. gryt

    Me no likey.

  19. A. Beaverhausen

    Now I’m craving Winchells.

  20. scone

    THIS HAS A TAIL!!!!! NO.

(You can see it if you scroll through Lainey’s slideshow: http://www.laineygossip.com/Rachel-McAdams-wears-Saint-Laurent-in-Germany/27728)

  21. angelena

Hmmm, I think the W is for “whatever.”

    She’s awfully pretty though.

  22. HKS

I don’t like it at all. That outer straps of the W hit her in a way that makes her upper half look much bigger than it actually is. Ahhh…W is for WIDE.

Yup, when I covered up those outside straps and just had the inverted V ones, I think it’s super cute.

  23. Nicole Brenes

    too short

  24. ohsohappy

The top half screams sophistication. The bottom…little girl. Not a good combo.

  25. TonyG

It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World! Is there some hidden cash buried under her big “W” top? ;)

  26. Elle

Shades of “Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?”

  27. Sajorina

LOVE it head to toe! The dress is AWESOME! I love the shoes, the jewelry, and the hair & makeup! WIN!

  28. SPJava

Today’s dress is brought to you by the letter W. For What’s going on there?
It sort of looks like a weird overall bib, especially when you see the side images, (thanks scone & HelenBackAgain) , that she isn’t wearing anything underneath. The hair and makeup is too “I’m a cross between Amy Adams and Nicole Kidman and I shouldn’t be because I’m cool enough to have my own look.” Work on that.

Spot on with this write-up, I seriously think this site needs far more consideration. I’ll apt to be again to see much more, thank you for that info.
