I can’t even see the picture, but I still voted with “whole wig.” Girlfriend looked like she could not breathe last night. And with McQueen, it’s all about the fit. The fit is off, the dress is worthless. Case in point.
Missed this last night, so I need a photo to decide!
Though I can’t see the dress here, I remember the dress from last night, and it was a bit too tight. Too bad, because I liked it otherwise in that it was not the boxy stuff she sometimes chooses.
I will say that the dress looked about a thousand times better on TV when she was onstage than in pictures when she was on the red carpet, so she gets a slight pass from me. Maybe it looked really good in person and no one realized how poorly it would photograph.
that’s why Cher Horowitz always took polaroids.
Yeah, you’d think they’d have the stylist or an assistant snap a pic on their iPhones–but with all the ill-fitting dresses we see here, they either don’t think of it, or those pictures lie.
I said it last night and I’ll say it again: Jessica Rabbit. If it WASN’T so tight, it wouldn’t be drawing that comparison, but that whole look was just a homage to Roger Rabbits wife.
Argh, she makes me crazy. She’s always just a few details off from being awesome. I love the dress, but it’s seriously too tight–it would’ve been awesome a size up (and maybe a different color…I’m not sure I love the orange-ness of the red with her red hair.)
The dress is beautiful, but the wrong size. And I feel like there’s something off with her hair and makeup combo – like, if she’s going to wear her hair kind of flat like that, she needs a stronger brow, maybe? Oh Chastain, I adore you, but this needed work.
I definitely second the stronger brow! As a fellow pale redhead, an auburn-tinted brow pencil goes a looooong way towards making you look better in photos.
I thought the same thing. “Is that dress pulling a little too much across her stomach? ”
Shouldn’t her stylist see that, and had it let out or get her the next size up and take it in? She’s a rather small woman so I’d think even a sample size couture gown could be made to fit better.
I think the only reason for the terrible fit is that is must have been too late. Other actresses have talked about picking a dress the day before or the day of an awards show, and by that point it’s too late to make alterations.
I’m about ready to call bullsh!t on that excuse. Not to Annie E. personally, but to the whole concept. I refuse to believe that Jessica Freakin’ Chastain or any other A-lister couldn’t snap her fingers and have every seamstress in LA county who’s worth her needle-case swarming to her house within the hour. In fact, my mother could have done this, if indeed it was possible and if she lived there. A professional stylist should have someone on call. If there’s some reason you’re not allowed to alter it, then try it the hell on sooner so you can choose something else if necessary.
Jessica herself is lovely and I think I would even take her hair over Duchess Kate’s–and we all know how I feel about that. In my Mary-Sue dreams, my hair looks just like that.
As a former intern for the press department of a New York designer, I’d like to clear a couple things up about this. First, there really is no such thing as going up a size when it comes to red carpet looks. Basics like pants or a jacket might be available in more than one size in a showroom. However, the cost of producing more than one of any sample is inhibitive for most designers. Also, most red carpet looks are from a season ahead. I.E. right now we are seeing a lot of S/S 13 looks which only physically exist in the sample used on the runway because the stock that goes out to stores is still being produced. So you can’t just run out to Bergdorf’s to pick up another size, and of course wearing something last season isn’t as buzzworthy for either the celebrity or the designer. Secondly, a LOT of stylist’s decisions are very last minute. I blame it mainly on the personality type that lends itself to being a freelance stylist paired with the busy schedule of many celebrities making fittings difficult. Some designers like Dior and Chanel or known for occasionally fitting a celebrity themselves for a special event, but most of the time it really is up to the stylist to make whatever they are given work.
I think it suffers from the strapless/want to give it a good yank up syndrome.
This makes me so uncomfortable to look at her. fOnce again, she deserves better.
Celebs: they’re just like us!
Awesome idea, not-so-awesome execution.
Love the hair and makeup, though.
When I saw this on tv last night, I thought the cups were a size too small. But really, it’s a size too small across the board. It should not be pulling so much across her tiny hips.
Personally, I think the red dress is wrong for her hair color. I think a contrast that compliments her hair is a much better option. And yes, it’s too tight.
If I can see your bellybutton, it’s probably too tight.
@Cathy – I am so sorry to report that what we’re seeing is not her bellybutton, unless she’s fallen victim to some terrible prolapsing-abdomen thing heretofore undocumented.
I remember as a pre-teen, my mother (who isn’t exactly Rachel Zoe but always has good advice) told me that if something was pulling across my hips or chest, or if you could see it gathering at the seams, then I should try on the next size up. I think my mom and Miss Chastain need to have a conversation.
And ESPECIALLY if your dress is bright and shiny, please make sure it fits! Bright, shiny, skintight dresses are not forgiving on anyone, even size 0 actresses.
This dress is so small and so tight that I have to look away if I plan to breathe. I simply do not understand why an actress would choose such an ill-fitting dress.
Too tight AND it looks like a (failed) imitation of J.Law’s efforts at the Globes.
It also makes her look oddly short. I’m not even sure how that’s possible, but that dress is cutting her down like a satin ninja.
What a shame, because this dress is gorgeous on her in every other way. I don’t think it needs to be more than half a size bigger… sigh. But it isn’t half a size bigger. Darnit.
I don’t understand how someone can be SO close so many times. Don’t you have to fire your stylist at some point for not doing their job? Coaches get fired when they fail to get to and win the championship. Something simply isn’t working between her and a certain group of people. Unless she truly enjoys being know for almost getting it right at every red carpet. If that’s the case, give her hugs.
Love the comments. All of them.
Jessica’s people: are you listening? Awards season is far from over!!
WHY can’t she dress even adequately for the red carpet WHY?
This is a terrible color on her, she shouldn’t wear strapless gowns and OH YEAH there’s no shame in going up a size (or 12)!
Holy crap – designers, her stylist and/or her friends must hate her SO MUCH.
Yes the dress IS A FEW HAIRS too tight, but she is so pretty she can be forgiven. It might take a while till she gets it totally right but until then her hair and face are so beautiful and she has a very sweet appearing personality. I hope those things do not change at all.
It may be a little tight, but it is LOVELY! She looks GORGEOUS & SEXY! Her hair & makeup are perfect! One of my favorites of the night! FAB!
I’M IN LOVE! Beautiful, Chastain!
She always looks like she has her period. Bloated.
She was so close with this one. Chastain has a tendency to go for slightly-too-tight dresses, but this one did good things for her shape, apart from the tightness. And her hair looked gorgeous like this, much better than when she scrapes it back.
Dress aside, please someone give this beautiful woman some eyebrows! She’s very fair, therefore needs to have a stronger brow and a little more makeup! Look at Anne Hathaway who, despite her choice of dress sometimes, at least gets the brow and makeup right.
Saw a photo of her in Entertainment weekly…..she looked FLAWLESS….black dress (couldn’t see it all but looked lovely), hair straight and just generally NOT TRYING SO DAMN HARD. She needs a new stylist or something because as you have said, casual, caught on the street shots of her are better than this.
There are tons of pics of Ms. Chastain on her way to the stage door of The Heiress, and this woman looks so fantastic day after day. She looks happy and relaxed and beautiful in the best collection of cute coats and great bags EVER! And, I actually like her hair when she doesn’t do much with it. She does really well picking her own clothes for casual, yet, when she’s on the red carpet, it’s a toss-up. And, most of my issues with her red-carpet looks aren’t so much the dress as the fit. This dress is pulling at the seams and gives a woman with a wonderful figure a pooch. Not flattering. I realize a busy actress has A LOT of clothes to get for awards season and not much time to shop or for fittings, but that’s why you have a stylist, no?
Check out her Erdem dress at the Oscar Luncheon. She hit it out of the ballpark on that one. The dress is divine and she looks wonderful in it.
