Golden Globes Fug Carpet: Julianna Margulies

Ohhhh, you guys, this one was hard for me. You know how much I love her. And I wanted to embrace the way she vamped it up so confidently, but in the end… this feels like a fancy mess.

Darn! I love Julianna Margulies, too, but she’s lost her early TGW awards show mojo. She always looks so stunning in bold colors with beautiful tailoring. I wish she’d find her way back there.

I actually kind of weirdly like this dress, but not on her. (Though I do admit the underskirt thing is kind of horrible.) What I do not think is horrible is her husband, who is just divine. She has the hottest husband in all the land.

In my book it’s hard for her to go wrong (like that white satin skirt/body cast top from a couple of years ago). Beautiful color on the dress, great hair, face and accessories. Especially the one on her left arm. Yowza! In previous pictures I’ve seen, he looked like he was only a couple of inches taller than her, and here he’s clearly about 6 feet tall (she’s 5-6, according to Wiki, and she’s probably wearing 3-inch heels). Must have been the one bad camera angle you can get with Mr. Lieberthal.

I do not think I have ever seen him before. He is DREAMY.

How old is he?? She has to be close to my age, maybe a few years younger? 46? He looks about 30!!

I don’t love her (though I enjoyed her on “The Mists of Avalon” eons ago), but I do love this dress! I don’t love it on her, but I LOVE IT! Plus, I think the hair & makeup are divine! But, the best accessory she’ll ever have is her scrumptious husband!

I remember walking on Fashion Avenue in NYC last July (when I went to meet the FugGirls in Brooklyn) and came across a sign on a street close to our hotel that said “Closed from 6-9am for filming ‘The Good Wife’”, which I don’t watch, but my father loves, and our flight was at 7am! Damn it, I wish I could’ve gone there to see who was filming! I love me some Alan Cumming!

I liked it. I loved the color, and I think the lace overlay is something that probably played better in person than in a photo. It was a daring choice for her, and I think it worked. I do think the underskirt showed through too much. Not sure how you would fix that. And I agree that the dress really didn’t need the open skirt. But overall, I liked it.

I can see this on Kristen Stewart…

Venomous tentacula over sheer mesh is not a good look, agree. She’s gorgeous, and this whole look would be saved with a skirt liner. Why is this so difficult for Hollywood to figure out?

Haha, love “venomous tentacula.” That’s perfect.

I agree about the pattern being excessive and that it needs more and better lining.

But it’s hard for me to completely hate on anything that shows that back, and has that face at the top of it.

I appreciated her red lip. At one point during the ceremony, the camera went from face to face to face and all I could see were nude lips everywhere. Then it got to Julianna and her smile just stood out.

This was a big fug for me. I’ve decided I don’t like lace, which is weird, because I love the IDEA of lace. Just not how it looks. Or feels. Or anything else about it. Also agree with whoever said high slit + backless = Too Much. Memo to Ladies of a Certain Age Who Still Look Awesome But Think We Don’t Notice Because You’re Over 40: WE DO. WE GET IT. PS: See Helen Mirren’s entire catalogue for how to make a statement without underlining it (love Soapdish!!).

Also, her ponytail looked really fake, like Barbie hair.

Oy. Painful. Julianna is my homegirl, but this is a hot mess.

She reminds me of Whatsername, the Anti-JLo.

We need to ease off a point on this lace/whatever over sheer until we can get it right.

If this dress were solid blue with just the little pointy detailing on the edge I would absolutely love it. However, as it is, it is SOOOOOOO fug.

Aye, too too much else going on. All the details on this dress are fighting each other and not a one is winning. Thigh high slits competing with racy back/delicate scallop-edged lace competing with glaringly short stupid underthing/ delicate patterned lace competing with scalloped edging competing with beading design of whatever the hell that is. Too much.

For the 18th time in 2 days. LINING. WTF is wrong with these people?

Otherwise, that’s a great dress. I do think her hair is too severe, something softer would have been better.

I said it on the night: Juliana Margulies is too pretty to wear a dress that makes her look desperate for attention.

  15. Sara

This dress is very similar to the one Rachel Weisz wore, no? The sheer overlay that extends beyond the underskirt. The open back is pretty, but combined with the slit and the lace pattern it’s entirely too much.

I need to lodge a Good Wife related complaint. I love that show and I love that it has a number of bad ass female characters. I do not watch the show live, so I usually catch up on CBS’s website. The icon I have to click on to watch is one of Julianna M. from this patently stupid sexypants promo shoot they did to advertise this season and UGH. It is just degrading to the show, her as an actress, and her character to act like it is all about sexytimes and whatever to get viewers in when she, and the show, are so much better than that. That is all. It just annoys me on a weekly basis when I go to watch it.

Good Lord. Would it have killed whoever designed this dress to just extend the underskirt by a few inches? It would still be bad, but the thought of sitting in the dress as it is is just nightmarish.

I dont like the dress and I hate her hair. It’s way too severe for my taste.

On the hand, her husband? Where did he come from?? Where can I get one??

They’ve been married for several years — he’s an attorney in NYC, and they met at a dinner party. She’s talked about him a little bit on Letterman a couple of times — she thought he was gorgeous and nice when they met, then she found out he was Jewish like her, and that kind of sealed the deal, LOL. And apparently he’s half Jewish and half Irish — again on Letterman, she called him her Irish Jew. Hence, there son’s name is Kieran — pretty Irish, LOL.

This is a woman who gets more beautiful as she ages. She does not need to try this hard. I agree that the back is super sexy, but it would have been enough. Let your beauty shine, Julianna. And bring the husband with you more often.

  20. Tassie

whywhywhy does she always wear that super severe, pulled back, poor man’s facelift ponytail? It is not flattering. If it must be pulled that tightly, maybe a high updo or something. The dress fits her nicely I think. the fabric looks like several warring lace patterns

    • Ms Poopy Von Pants
      0

Yes, I agree, Tassie. WHYYYYY does she always wear her hair like that? Why is she always hiding her hair?? I’ve heard she wears a wig on TGW. (again, more hair-hiding.) From what I remember way back on ER, she has a gorgeous head of hair, why hide that?!

She looked beautiful at the GG but those strategically placed lace blobs are making me uncomfortable, especially the front one. It’s making me think that I’m seeing things other than lace.

      • Big Noise
        0

I’ve read that the reason she wears a wig on TGW is that it would take too much time to straighten her hair and thus more time to film the show — and cost more money. Also, her character is an associate at a high-powered firm where the attorneys dress conservatively — a head full of wild, curly hair isn’t appropriate for the character. Whereas ER nurse Carol Hathaway probably wouldn’t spend that much time on her hair for work.

Ugh. Big big ugh. What is the appeal of the sheer skirt bottom? It’s hideous! What’s Julianna doing with it on? What’s Kerry Washington, Rachel Weiss et al doing with it? Not sexy in the least, just complicating. If you want a short skirt, wear a short skirt!! If you want a long skirt, don’t make it sheer!

I agree with you 100%. This dress is just adjacent to awesome. It can see awesome from here. But the pattern and the skirt… no. Line the skirt and make the slit halfway up, and I’m on board; you don’t even need to change the pattern. But change the pattern to a lacier lace, and I’m buying it for myself tomorrow.

I want to love this. I love the color, I love the lace, I love the beading on the lace, it’s creative and unusual and makes her stand out as someone with interesting taste in clothing in a sea of boring dishwater. (And she and her beautiful smile are radiant.) But besides the lining issue, the dress makes her look like she has no waist, and the high boatneck collar isn’t doing her neck and shoulders any favors. Keep the lace and the neat scalloped edges, but make it into a fully-lined gown of a different silhouette.

  27. Tiffany

I am so sad! I loved this dress in certain pictures, but I had no idea the lining in the back was like that. I like the navy and the dragon feel a whole lot, I just wish the lining didn’t ruin it all!

Yay Heather for the SOAPDISH reference! And for the perfect quote from Carolynlph! My day just improved in a way completely unrelated to Julianna Margulies and her dress. “I had no friends, I wore too much makeup and all the kids thought I was evil”
