SAG Awards: Fug Nation’s Best and Worst

Will Tina Fey be your best-dressed for the third time in a row? Will it be Marion? Or perhaps an underdog, like Nina Dobrev, Sarah Hyland, or Vanessa Lengies, all of whom wore great dresses but would have to elbow out a bigger name? And worst-dressed… well, per usual, there’s a lot more breadth of choice there. If you want to jump around the slideshow, there is a little photo slider underneath the main photo that you can use to shuffle from person to person without clicking on every slide.

The longest polls in the world are after the jump.

I was torn on Best Dressed (Amanda Seyfried, Marion Cotillard and Nina Dobrev). I ended up giving the edge to Amanda because the hem of that dress is stunning perfection and I really liked the unusual necklace. Plus she hardly ever gets it right, so I think it’s nice to acknowledge when she does.

Agree totally. Hem + necklace put her over the edge for me. Fresh, modern, perfection!

Those were my 3 as well!

I was torn between the same three. I think it came down to Amanda looking the most striking, but all three were gorgeous in very different ways.

I also have to give an honorable mentions to Phillis Logan in the “Woman of a Certain Age” category, and Kiernan Shipka in the “Under Eighteen” category

Worst dressed is so difficult to choose…there were so many. Why so many ill fitting dresses? Why so many visible granny panties (can that trend please go away, like yesterday)?

I find it hard to forgive Michelle Dockery for displaying so much side boob, but since the dress is apparently vintage, she’s relatively new to the scene, and I love Lady Mary, I’ll give her a pass. Julianne Moore and Sigourney Weaver both have the bodies, faces and experience to look stunning, so it is hard to excuse their ill fitting, unflattering monstrosities. But in the end, Kaley Cuoco’s awful wig and hideous dress won her my worst dressed award.

CANNOT decide between Rose Byrne & Sigourney Weaver for worst! At least Roses’s dress fits…?

While she looked great I don’t actually think Tina Fey was best dressed. I just want her to WIN!!!!!

I actually contemplated voted for Angela K. just for her good-sport reaction to the brothel comments about her dress. But the vote was best-dressed, not best sport. So I selected Bledel. I honestly don’t know who she is, but I am crazy about her dress, and her necklace, and her clutch.

For me, there are so many choices for Worst Dressed…..I hope these ladies look better for the Oscars.

Thank you for the gift of Sigourney so late in the slide show–it hit me like a bolt of Fug-lightning!

I had to vote worst to Julianna Margulies. I hated everything, the cut, the color, the cheap fabric, the hair and dear God the shoes. Hated it. I know there is not a snowballs chance that Gabby Douglas will win best but I voted for her anyway just because she looked so cute and so happy! After all that crap that went on after the Olympics she deserved at least one vote : )

I don’t watch Mad Men (I know, I know), but that little girl that plays Sally Draper is adorable! Her dress was just perfect for a girl her age.

I thought Doug Stanhope admitted to that Blind Item on his Facebook page? Also, the ‘got your facts wrong’ bit from the victim maybe means that the situation wasn’t as described; maybe they weren’t trapped by him and left (hopefully)? I hope it’s not Louis CK anyway, and I can’t imagine it being him as he seems to pro-women and I don’t think he’d threaten somebody’s career. I just realised that this wasn’t even the point of the post at all. So Kieran Shipka is who got my vote, although Marion is a close second.

    • Carola

I read that Blind Item when it was published and really hoped it wasn’t Louis CK. I remember sometime afterward hearing that he’d been cleared pretty definitively; I wish I could find the source….

Marion Cotillard FTW! That dress is divine.

I voted Idina Menzel for worst-dressed because it was the only one I truly wished I could un-see.

I was down to Cuoco and Weaver for worst, but had to give it to Sigourney because she’s done better in the past and should know better. (Plus, I cannot forgive the no bra).

On worst dressed I was grading on a curve. Nicole Kidman has no business dressing that badly. She knows better.

    • Vandalfan

Yes, also grading on a curve. I expect more from a Kidman or Hathaway than some of the less well-known.

Why can’t Julianne Moore , with her beauty and talent and I assume she can afford it, dress better? And why can’t Julianne Marguilies and Sigourney ? Helen Hunt and Sally Field are sure flying the flag for the older gen though. They look beautiful and Nina D looks so confident and chic.
But beautiful Mairon C is the winner- the dress is superb and she always looks comfortable and happy. ( Amanda S take note)

Sally Field was total perfection. I liked the usual suspects–Dobrev, Cotillard, etc.–but she was a surprise hit.

  16. Mongerel

    Best:
    3) Dobrev
    2) Woodard (really loved that) but only got one vote and who am I kidding…
    1) Cotillard by a mile.

Worst: Lots to choose from, which makes it so much fun.
    3) Westfeldt (who forgot to put a dress on over her underthing)
    2) Moore – hands down *loser*, until…
    1) Weaver. So bloody, bloody awful.

  17. Eliza

Best Dressed – I voted for Kiernan Shipka because not only did she did look awesome but it’s much harder at that age to get the mix just right. It’s tempting, especially with the offers of designer dresses, to go older. She hit the mark between sophisticated and age appropriate.

Worst Dressed – I voted for Julianne Moore. With her star power and wearing Chanel couture, there was no excuse for such an ill-fitting dress. If you’re wearing couture, it has to be fitted to a T. Who at Chanel let that on the red carpet looking that way? I wonder if she/he had a job on Monday?

I loved Marion’s dress but had to go with Nina Dobrev, she was just perfection. And that colour!

Torn, there were some well dressed folks! Helen hunt, Viola Davis, Amanda Seyfried, Marion Cotillard….but I voted for Dobrev. She just looks perfect.

  22. Sara

Best dressed is Marion Cotillard. She just owns everything she wears. I love her and her new haircut.

Worst dressed was Rose Byrne, because it’s a mighty feat to make someone SO beautiful look so absolutely awful.

  23. Sylvia
    0

I voted for Kate for best dressed. She NEVER gets to show off like that and she nailed it. Having said that, I won’t be mad if Marion wins. My crush on her is immense and she nailed it for me.

So many worst dressed options. Seeing Ripley in that get up broke my heart. She was my first she-ro and deserves so much better than that. But in the end, I voted for Kaley Cuoco. THAT WIG!! I feel like Kanye could do an entire all caps blog on that wig y’all. It made her everything look horrible.

I voted for Cotillard (sigh) but Vanessa Lengies’ dress was probably my second favorite, like what I would want to wear if I went somewhere fabulous.

I went with Chastain for worst dressed just because I could not get OVER how bad the fit was. I mean, Sigourney’s was all kinds of crazy and didn’t fit either, but at least it was hilarious. Chastain’s was close to being gorgeous and that made the presentation soooo much worse for me. Best dressed goes to Helen Hunt without question this time. Sidenote: what little hair I have left is crying to be on top of Branson’s head and not my own (adorbs).

I knew she wouldn’t be in the top on here, but my vote is for Viola Davis. “Simple” and stunning, and such a gorgeous color. Great shape, great fit, and great color. Who could ask for me? Not me!

    • Maren
      0

Ditto. I knew it was a longshot vote but she just nailed it and deserved the thumbs-up.

  28. anna s.

Best dressed is easy: Nina Dobrev by a mile. She’s gorgeous, her posture deserves awards in and of itself, and most importantly, she dresses like a movie star on a CW star’s budget. Seriously. Nina deserves a ton of credit for pulling of real glamour when she doesn’t have a multi-movie-star budget. You go girl. I’m rooting for your fantagasmically gorgeous self.

Worst dressed is harder, because there were few people at this year’s SAGs who really wore things that were terrible. But Sigourney Weaver’s? Like I said on the fug post for it: I wore this that year when I stapled the edges of a pillowcase together for Halloween and went as a bag of flour. It’s kind of egregious. You have an amazing body, Siggy! Please wear things that flatter it more!

  29. Melisa Carlill
    0

Best: Dobrev. She looks like a gorgeous statue. Gotta give some love to the TV girls.

Worst: Hathaway. Considering what she has access to and what she chose to do with that privilege.

  30. Charlotte
    0

Best: It was between Nina Dobrev and Amanda Seyfried. I ended up throwing it to Seyfried because that color is DIVINE on her, and because Dobrev’s dress, while tremendous in the context of the SAGs, was only fine in the context of her incredible record.

Worst: Jenna Elfman. Refried melange of dying trends + unflattering fit + visible spanx = OH HONEY NO.

Also, am I the only person who didn’t really care for Marion Cotillard’s gown? Don’t get me wrong, her styling is impeccable, and the dress is certainly the best iteration of the white bodice/colored skirt trend I’ve seen, but…I guess that I just find the whole thing snoozeworthy. It’s fine, but it didn’t ring my bell. I would not subscribe to that dress’s newsletter.

    • Esme

No, I wasn’t keen on Marion’s dress either–similar ones have been fugged before, so not sure why this one’s getting a pass.

  31. Charlotte

And THAT BLIND ITEM WTF. I really hope it’s not Louis CK, not because I’m a fan (I’m really, really not) but because it would put such an icky spin on the interview he did with Jon Stewart last year, where he talked about the Daniel Tosh Rapepocolypse 2012 debacle and how the ensuing controversy taught him the extend to which sexual assault and the fear of sexual assault defines and confines women’s lives. He actually seemed half-way genuine, if a bit self-congratulatory (do you want an award for showing a base level of human decency?), so it would be really unfortunate if it turned out that he had just been lying to appear sympathetic.

The dresses this awards season have been the ugliest I’ve seen in a long time. What’s going on? Have all these actresses taken leave of their (sartorial) senses? Do they not have mirrors or honest friends? And why have so many unflattering trends taken hold at once? Granny panties, sheer overlays, ugly colors: GO AWAY.

  33. Katie

Honorable mention to Jane Krakowski for miraculously pulling off conversation heart orange. Dishonorable mentions to morena & zuleikha, but my worst vote went to Rose Byrne.

  34. Rebecca

I wish you had an up/down vote system here because I so wanted to give love to about 12 dresses (for example Mayim was by no means best dressed but let’s give her some love for steeping it up, Jane K wasnt the best but give her props for pulling off a wierd color, and God-bless Amy P was gorgeous but still couldnt match the perfection of Nina) and 85% were not quite bad enough to be worst dressed but need to be voted on as bad! (PS: no one check my math here)

    • Candy Jo
      0

I could have gone for a ‘most improved’ vote and would have signed off on Mayim’s look. I know she has her reasons for less coverage, but she definitely stepped up her game. And a lot of women could take a few notes since her beauty is enhanced and you can see her shape, but doesn’t look desparate for attention with any side/under boob or sheer paneling/granny panties.

  35. Danielle

Marion and Nina were the best! I’M the worst as I accidentally voted for Marion for worst …oooops.

  36. Sara

Best dressed I was completely torn – for me, it was a close call between Kelly Osbourne (and even with that hair! I thought she looked stunning and deserves some love for finally working it!), Nina Dobrev (even if it was more her general aura than her dress), the ever-perfect Viola Davis, and some other stunners like Helen Hunt and Jennifer Garner. I was surprised by how stunning I thought Jane Krakowski looked as well, but in the end I gave the longshot vote to Kelly.

While there were so many monstrosities, for me the one that stood out was Morena. I know, I know, I should be getting used to her turning up to things looking completely batshit insane, but her outfit stunned me in terms of awfulness. She is so, so gorgeous and that was so, so awful and oh god I can’t put it into words. No one else?

I totally agree with all of this, but gave my best dressed to Nina, maybe because I have finally just started watching the Vampire Diaries and she is just fantastic in that role. That is an addictive show…

Best: Amanda Seyfried, Nina Dobrev, Helen Hunt, Jennifer Garner, Elisabeth Moss & Marion Cotillard… I gave my vote to Amanda because of her simple elegance! PERFECTION!

Worst: It was between Sigourney Weaver, Amber Riley & January Jones, but gave my vote to January because of that Ziggy Stardust hair! She’s no David Bowie & this isn’t the early 70s! FUG!!!

C’mon, you guys, VIOLA DAVIS for best. She looks beyond amazing. Her jewelry and makeup and the color…just perfect. I also adored Kelly Osborne’s dress, and Jane Lynch’s xena dress was surprisingly awesome. I picked Kaley for worst, but Julianna Margolie’s was almost equally vile.

I’m kinda surprised that Jenna Fischer hasn’t been mentioned yet. I thought she was stunning!

There are a lot of dresses that I thought were fabulous (Kelly Osborne, Nina Dobrev, Amanda Seyfried, Amy Poehler) but they seemed specific to the wearer. Not a bad thing; it’s just that Jenna’s really stood out to me as timeless, and it makes me think that in some alternate reality I could wear it to a fancy pants museum party and hob-nob with glamorous people and it wouldn’t be entirely far-fetched. Kinda the same feeling that I got from christopher palau’s pink and black dress from project runway season 10.

  43. Hima

For best dressed, I was torn between: Amanda Seyfried, Helen Hunt, Jennifer Garner, and Marion Cotillard. I ended up choosing Jennifer Garner (although I might be giving her more credit because I think she killed it twice in a row).

For worst, it was easy for me to pick Julianne Moore. I HATE how ill-fitting the top of that dress is. WHY on earth do people eschew bras?? BRAS are your friend! But you can’t wear a bra when the dress is so ill-fitting. You are famous hollywood people! You have the power and money to look your best! Do it! (Sorry, that became a rant at Julianne and all the other stars who don’t properly fit their clothes).

Also, if Louis CK is the person in that blind item, I will be super bummed. I think he’s hilarious and talented and it would suck so bad if he turned out to be a disgusting person like that. IF someone finds something that definitely identifies the person, please post!

For Worst Dressed, I was sorry I couldn’t vote TWICE for Busy Phillips because she pulled off the feat of dressing godawfully for TWO.

  45. Kathleen F.
    0

Jane Krakowski for best, Morena Baccarin for worst. I definitely identify with Fug Nation’s great love for Marion Cotillard, who looked beautiful and was my choice for a very close second, but ultimately Krakowski’s perfectly-fitting gown of a really unusual color (and SPARKLES!) pushed her over the edge. Honorable mentions go to Jane Lynch, Nina Dobrev, Sally Field, and Amanda Seyfried who finally figured out how to put a great look together. There were a lot of baaaad dresses, but Baccarin’s seemed to combine the most utterly nonsensical elements all in one garment. Impressive, if sad.

  46. erin

Fashion wise, there were too many lovely dresses this time for me to pick a single winner. Wow, Viola, Marion, Nina, even Mayim looked really appropriate and elegant. I am deeply concerned about Kerry Washington’s and Rose Byrnes’s weight. They look like absolute tooth picks. I hope they are okay.
