Golden Globes Well Played Carpet/SWINTONly Played Other Carpets: SWINTON

well-played

It seems only fitting that our first post in what will be exhaustive/ing Globes coverage is the High Priestess of Fabufuggery. Personally, I unironically and unabashedly love the hell out of this dramatic suit — I want her to wear it to a wedding at which her salacious affair with the groom will be revealed, or to a press conference where it’s revealed she is David Bowie’s sister — but the other stuff she trotted out this weekend was more SWINTONIAN in its boxy starkness, the  kind of thing we either love without reason or dislike with great affection. Join hands as we plunge into the SWINTON vortex.

I love it also. Except….is she wearing thongs? the bare-looking feet kinda stump me.
But god she is just so…Swinton….I can’t take my eyes off her.

I agree! She is honestly maybe my best dressed of the night. It is VERY flattering, it gives her a total hour glass figure. The color is gorgeous. And it is totally age appropriate for an over 50 mother without being matronly.

    She’s not a person. She’s a piece of architecture.

Finally, SWINTON in all her SWINTON AWESOMENESS (or Swesomeness!)… The color of the dress is devine, the cut & fit are perfect and the lenght is right on! I love the cuff bracelets (they’re so Wonder Woman) and I love that her shoes are open-toed metallic high heels (instead of towering hooves)! This is Tilda at her finest! Definitely, one of the BEST dressed of the night! LOVE!!!

I love La SWINTON so much. I dig the periwinkle outfit and I would wear it myself (in another color) in a hot second. And THE HAIR. She’s so awesome.

So refreshing seeing her on the carpet working it next to all the other boringos: waxwork Angelina and her lapdog et al. Everyone who thinks Swinton is “freakish” and who try making jokes about her looking like Bowie are too stupid to realize it’s deliberate, and that they’re paying her the highest of compliments.

I like the lady minister outfit. Let’s all worship at the Church of SWINTON!

One of my favorites of the night by far! The color is stunning on her – I love her in nudes and powdery pastels. She is like an ice sculpture of a modern ice queen. Perfection head to toe.

I’ve always said that in my next life i’ll sing like Aretha. Now i also plan to look and dress like Swinton. The blue is one of the most gorgeously awesome things ever.

I love that she looks so curvy! Very unusual for SWINTON. Delightful color.

I was absolutely stunned when I saw this – I couldn’t believe she was actually wearing a color that didn’t wash her out. I unironically loved this as well – it’s one of the few times a mermaid hem actually looked right to me, since that awesome coat balances it out visually and structurally. With her height and build, it was awesome.

I just figured her hair was her SWINTON coming out – you could make her wear an incredibly feminine color and cut, but you couldn’t make her contain her inner glory.

    All Hail SWINTON!

    Yay! You’re posting! I’m so happy! :)

LOVED Swinton in the blue, thought her hair was amazzzzzing at the awards – didn’t see her in the others which are “meh” and “not bad” respectively. She’s giving me a bit of a Bowie vibe (facially) in the last one, actually – which really – can that EVER be a bad thing?

SWINTON looks amazing. The color, the fit, the hair…beautiful. I feel like it’s wrong of me to take my eyes off SWINTON, but I keep getting drawn to the guy in the background who looks like he’s on his way to the Ministry of Silly Walks.

This is awesome sauce. Great color, perfect fit, love love love the mermaid skirt with the jacket. It’s completely fab without giving up any of her trademark SWINTON-ness.

If Joan Collins had a fairy godmother it would look like Swinton in this periwinkle dream.

SWINTON (my personal goddess) is passable in white, vaguely cruisey (as in voyage, not Tom) in black and white, but outstandingly, SWINTONLY awesome in the periwinkle. The dress, the cuffs, the cut, color and texture, not to even mention the buttery pastry hairstyle, all combine to make a perfect storm of fab.

    OK, whew. Breathe, breathe………….

SWINTON in periwinkle is a sight to behold. *swoons* How in the hell does she do it?

The white is meh….. but not a complete fail.

The black & white is indeed Reverendy, but again, she carries it off.

  25. Rosemarie

One of the things I love about her here is that I can actually see lines under her eyes. Lines that imply teensy “bags”, that imply aging. She makes the botoxed bunch look like clowns. La Kidman (and all the rest of you), take notes. Drink deeply from the Well of Swinton.

I sent this link to my minister, asked if she could hook us up with some SWINTON, because obviously- she’s a UU.

Mr. Ministry of Silly Walks could come too, I guess.

LOVE her hair in the first pic. And her dress (I love Periwinkle)! She is THE High Priestess of Drama-Dressing. I also like it ALOT that she seldom (if ever?) wears war-paint. I’d marry ‘er!

  33. Claire L

I love everything she wears, even the most cracked out. She is always her own thing and everything is truly, a piece of art. I feel like she walks through museums and points out which piece of art or architectural drawings she wants made into a jacket/gown/outfit.

The periwinkle suit is absolutely, positively divine, and only SWINTON could sell it like that. I love the line about her coif looking like a pastry, indeed!

  37. Sarah

The periwinkle is 100% amazing. I don’t think that SWINTON has ever looked better!! I really hope you have a best dressed/worst dressed poll so that I can vote emphatically for SWINTON as best dressed. And based on the way we’ve all drunk the SWINTON Kool-Aid [the most delicious Kool-Aid of all], I’m thinking she takes that poll in a landslide.

  38. vandalfan

And it’s the WAY she wears The Periwinkle, with one lapel casually popped.

  39. Jenna Horko

Swinton always looks amazing, but the periwinkle is the best she has ever looked, And thus, it is not only the outfit of the night, but the outfit of the frigging century! Millennium! Universe! Maybe she’s just happy David Bowie just had a birthday, and decided to take her fabulousness to new heights?

  40. D

I was really happy to see her in this! It’s very her, and is actually really flattering. The color is perfect especially with the color of her hair right now. Nobody else could wear this, but she is rocking it.

  41. Kelly

LOVE this!! The blue on her is fantastic. Perfect! My fav from her for a LONG time. (the rest, is fug although she is always well dressed – you can tell by the quality of the garments). I wish she’d choose different shoes fore Pete’s sake, but I guess when you’re 6 foot something, and have ski’s for feet it’s difficult to do real bada** shoes.

Okay, just looked up the Haider Ackermann collection. Warning: Some of this is so NSFW, as tops can be non-existent.

    http://www.style.com/fashionshows/complete/S2012RTW-HACKERMAN?viewall=true

I think this is #28, based on the sleeve type and draping on the right shoulder – obviously modified from runway. But what stunned me is that she didn’t pick #29 or other pantsuits (which would have been equally chic, just not as surprising).

  43. Diana

That blue is just divine. I feel like I need to breathe into a paper bag looking at it. Really spectacular, the best of the night hands-down.

  44. Jeannine

As a dedicated Swintophile, I am as always, in awe of her Swinton-ness. That she was bested by Meryl Streep, wearing a dress that Ethel Mertz would wear for a night out with Fred, is beyond comprehension. I am also sure that Swinton glanced at Madonna’s glove with slight amusement, then simply turned away….

  45. Angela

I am incapable of seeing SWINTON without saying “SWINTON” out loud, I just whispered it to myself at work. Amazing outfit.

My husband jumped off the couch when I yelled SWINTON upon her exit from the limo.

  46. fritanga

I worship her, because with each successive, bizarrely and gorgeously constructed outfit she seems to be saying, “You will NEVER, EVER wear clothes such as these in your entire LIFE. Look upon me and DESPAIR.” Everyone else’s unimaginative GG gowns will probably end up knocked off in the schmatta district within days, but never SWINTON’s. She, Cate Blanchett and now Rooney Mara are the standard-bearers for the rare, strange and unattainable.

I don’t get the hype. She looks good, but I would expect to see this as a mother of the bride dress. Not an award show dress. But whatevs.

Except for the hair (which I admire with crazeballs love), I genuinely believe she is resplendent in that first picture. Amazing.

Beautiful. Perfect. Lovely. She’s never been so wonderful before. But there’s something about her face… age is erasing that uniqueness that was so appealing.

  51. Heta

In the third minister-outfit photo, her face/hair look less like Bowie and more like a perfect combination of Andy Warhol and Buster Keaton. Love her.

Mara, I agree. The dress is gorgeous, fits her to a ‘T”. She’s the polar opposite of that horrible loin-cloth model girl thing.

I WANT THIS OUTFIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wouldn’t it be faboosh if THE SWINTON, LA ROUX AND BOWIE did a photoshoot…………………………………….U bet Andre Leon Talley would hang that picture in his salon!

There’s no denying that Swinton looks amazing in that dress and that colour but……is it the lighting, or the lack of make-up, or just me, she looks rather lifeless, as in not breathing, Madame Tussaud’s wax figure lifeless. Her head doesn’t look real. Maybe it’s her posture, I can’t figure it out.

SWINTON is such a stunning tower of human awesomeness, she needs signal lights coming outta that coif to warn approaching planes.

I volunteer to install them. <3

  57. Alena

When I saw her in the lovely blue periwinkle I had an internal moment of squee! SWINTON at her best. She is like a tall, cool drink of water in a sea of washed out, colorless, typical Jessica Alba and Kate Beckinsale getups. Once again, SWINTON=pwn.

Dreadful. Amazing actress. Terrible stylist. This is one of the biggest jokes of the show and the terrible thing is, in years to come, it will look even worse. Trust me. Take this out in five years time and you will chuckle at her stupidity.

Merigue hair aside, that blue jacket is the best thing worn at the awards, hands down. Heck, probably one of the most amazing garments I have seen recently ANYWHERE. Gorgeous color, gorgeous design, and impeccable fit.

We see sooooo many clothes at these awards shows that are obviously lent and were not fitted properly for the wearer. I just don’t get it. I’d rather see a dress from the mall properly fitted on someone than some expensive Fill-in-the-designer’s-Name dress that fits terribly. Saw the INCREDIBLE Daphne Guinness exhibit at FIT and in one of the videos she talked about fit being everything. I agree. And the fit on this jacket is making absolutely swoon. It’s gorgeous and it makes her look sensational.

LOOK AT THIS Y’ALL. She’s a resplendent alien. I want to hang out in her universe.

And the detailing on the jacket is so very cool too, I didn’t notice it in the pic above.
