Grammy Awards Whatever Carpet: Madonna (With Bonus Queen Latifah Goodness)

My main reaction to this, sincerely, was, “She didn’t even BeDazzle her cane. BORING.” However, I want David Banda to end up marrying one of the Jolie-Pitts, because the ensuing wedding weekend and/or dinner table meeting of the in-laws would be one HELL of a movie.

They kept announcing that there would be something unexpected that we “couldn’t miss” and I was so skeptical but they were right. That performance was pretty amazing, and when they panned the audience there were a lot of tears.

Which is such a weird tease, because they’d publicized that it was happening.

    WORDS.

Even my daughter commented that Madonna’s makeup looked like I could have applied it. (I NEVER wear makeup) And the grill. WORDS ABOUT THE GRILL.

Oh Madge. Just age gracefully. I beg you.

I know, right? She looked good (and natural) until she started with the fillers and Botox about 5 years ago.

      •  Mair Mair
        +46

Honestly, she looks freeze dried. Queen Latifah’s radiance and class only served to emphasize how sad Madge is at this point. And I say that as someone with a lot of affection for the Madonna of my youth.

Yeah, whatever she’s doing to her face is having the exact opposite effect of what she’s going for. It looks like she sent her Mme Tussaud’s figure to the ceremony.

    •  Jules
      +12

She looks puffy and tight all at once; it’s not flattering on a woman of any age. She is so lovely still underneath the bad Botox choices, and would do well to pull a Helen Mirren and just go with it. No need to play 30 forever! Her son is absolutely adorable, at least, and looks like he had a great time.

I’m happy with Madonna’s Amish Gangsta look except for the stupid grille. I suspect she thinks it takes away from the terrible work she’s had done around her eyes, which, hey, DeNile yaddayadda.

Some color would be nice, though. Black and white is not helping the face situation.

Cannot agree enough. Girlfriend needs to lay off the knife.
And what is this woman’s obsession with pimps? First she’s an Amish Pimp, then she’s Col. Sanders Pimp. What’s next? Scottish Line Dancer Pimp? Pope Pimp? I’m over it.

OK, I just watched the performance, and Macklemore and Lambert were amazing. To me, Madonna just didn’t add anything…her voice was never the best part of her performances, and it’s not gotten any better over the years. I’ll always have a fondness for 80s and 90s Madonna, but when she uses the cane as a prop now it’s starting to look like it’s more utility than prop. (Sorry.)

Seeing her now makes me a little sad, too. I remember “Like a Virgin” like it was yesterday. She truly was an original. She is tweaking her face too much (although at least she doesn’t seem to be have addiction issues, which is great). I kinda like this suit; it’s basic and age-appropriate. But I wish she’d left her son home.

    • TalleyL

To be fair, she told people she is recovering from a dance injury and the cane wasn’t just a prop.

Disagree on the wedding thing. It reminded me of the mass weddings the Moonies used to (still do?) host. I support marriage rights for everyone, but this was more about the celebrities and not about the lifelong vows and personal histories of the participants.

I think this is SO different, though. Those people weren’t asking cameras to follow them around and make characters — nor celebrities — out of them. They just wanted to get married and thought, “Hey, let’s go big.” I think something like this versus something like the Bachelor or Kim Kardashian is wildly different.

I have a really hard. time looking at her. The surgery/Botox/fillers have made her frightening in my opinion. But I agree, I am glad he at least was dressed somewhat appropriately. Pop music is really a young person’s game (particularly her kind… dance pop). Maybe it is time to just step aside.

DUDE. Mary Lambert and Queen L’s stylists need to get together with Melissa McCarthy and all the other full-figured women of Hollywood. They both looked amazing. And sparkly. And well-supported. Madonna looks the fool up there with those two.

The last time I checked, Queen Latifah and Mary Lambert are both tall, or at least not as obviously short as Melissa McCarthy. I’m not certain their dresses would work on her without having her appear to be swimming in fabric.

I’m choosing to do exactly what Madonna is trying to avoid people doing- I’m going to completely ignore her. Why focus on her tired schtick when we can talk about how FABULOUS Queen Latifah looks! She looks amazing. The dress, the styling, her face. Perfection. She has incredible skin and I’m jealous of her cheekbones. Incredibly jealous.

Queen Latifah is probably by best dressed. She looks amazing.

Madonna was a joke. Between the grill, makeup, her face and her hair color she looked like Jack Skellington’s mother. Her son is super cute though.

He’s cute but let’s face it: he was an accessory here. Contrast this to Tina Fey bringing her kid to the SAG awards, which was just so Alice would have fun. Madonna’s kid was a prop, probably intended to prove that she’s not a racist, HATERS.

I wish she and her Gollum arms (tm Liz Lemon) would just give it a rest. Honey, no one cares anymore.

I’ve always admired Madonna’s guts and determination, but I think she should have gone away six years ago. What she’s done to her face is horrifying. David Banda is a cute kid, though…

I had always hoped Madonna, who had impeccable marketing sense/timing, etc., would be wise… or at least clever or confident enough to age gracefully, to wrap herself up in being what one ought to look like in your 50s – to realize, as you get older, a little more weight is a good thing for your face, and not fillers, but natural weight. You can still be fit with a round face, Madonna – e.g. your earlier career. But she’s done exactly what a desperate, Hollywood-type who only had her looks going for her starlet would do… and Madge was never that.

Moving on – Queen Latifah one of the best stylist in Hollywood. She ALWAYS looks perfectly put together. While it was the Grammy Awards and she was also the wedding officiate, so, she is on point, as they say.

  15. Tina
    +4

OK, I love Queen Latifah and her business is her own. But isn’t she pretty much in the closet? So it seems a little weird to me to have her performing this wedding. Shouldn’t it have been someone who is more out?

    • HelenBackAgain
      +19

She’s not exactly in or out. She just doesn’t talk about her personal life publicly.

I find it a refreshing change.

      • Heather
        +11

I also don’t think it matters — you can be happy for people, and officiate a wedding, regardless of what your personal situation is. I also thought I’d seen some opposite-sex couples in there as well, but maybe I am wrong.

There were straight couples too. I read somewhere they had a mix of gay and straight and young and old and interracial coupes. Oh, and Ryan Lewis’ sister and her girlfriend were one of the couples. I wish the couples would have gotten a little more screen time, but I, like Keith Urban, shed a few tears anyway. I always cry at weddings.

I read somewhere else that Madonna was using the cane because she hurt her foot or leg recently. Nonetheless, stahp it with the stupid grille, gurl. And the one glove. And the fillers and botox. And tweets you have to apologize for. Ah, nvm, just stahp already.

Can somebody please give Madonna a hat intervention? She’s doing it wrong. Forehead first, don’t stick it on the back of the head. Also, grille = stupid, on everybody.

My husband said that Madonna’s white outfit looked like she stole it from Boss Hog (Dukes of Hazzard). And I can’t unsee it… and yes, this shows my age. ; – )

I always loved Madonna’s face. She was gorgeous. But now I’m so sad about how she’s jacked it up. She looks like the Wicked Witch of the West. She’s got such an “Eff You” attitude, it would have been nice for her to age a little more gracefully and told the people who didn’t like it to Eff Off. She could have become an inspiration rather than a caricature.

  24. Kris

From what I understand, David wanted his mom to wear the same thing he was on the red carpet, so I’m giving her a pass on it. Also, he’s adorable.

I just can’t comment on Madonna anymore. She’s getting ridiculous.
I do think this is the best I’ve ever seen the Queen look (and I generally think she’s gorgeous). Many people there need to take some lessons from her stylist.

Crap. Looking at that picture of her then, verses her now may be heart hurt a little. It must be insanely heartbreaking to be aging in this industry.

Or at least in her case, just insane.

she’s in I’m Madonna…Look At Me mode as usual…i get tired just looking at her trying so hard to be so relevant and young…her face looks like a kabuki mask and not in a good way either…having a kid for an accessory is also bizarre…but Queen Latifah is a goddess and once again shows everyone exactly how its done…

I loved the “Same Love” song (made me cry happy tears) until Madonna came on (and I just cried sad tears). Her voice just did not go with the song.

The wedding (and I am gay) I didn’t like only because it was kind of like the ending of a Spike Lee movie, where, just in case you didn’t “get it,” the message is rammed home with such obviation that it kind of slaps you in the head. Also, though a fan of Queen Latifah, she is still, shall we say, coy, about her own relationships, so that did not quite sit right with me. All these folks, brave (in a real way) sharing their love with, literally, the world, and she cannot acknowledge her own in a public way. I do appreciate her being there, and her willing service, to sanctify the love of others, but it just came off a bit hypocritical.

    The outfits:

Latifah is, indeed, gorgeous, head to toe; the beauty in that face knows no bounds.

Madonna’s black outfit I like; it’s her; it’s not over the top. I actually like the style.

Madonna’s white outfit: no; and the beauty in her face…is…well…bound.

And the other thing that sprung to mind, Jim Carrey in Mask is it?
