I am beginning to think that Maxima’s resolution for 2015 was “wear the heaviest necklaces possible.” That plus TERRIFYING CLOWNS, good sunglasses, and a couple of amazing coats. COATS!
Here at GFY this week, Kate popped out for three engagements in a light blue coat and a patterned frock and OBVIOUSLY WE COVERED IT.
And elsewhere:
- Per the BBC, Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah has died (at 90), and his obituary is interesting and educational. Trivia: this means that QE2 is now the oldest living monarch, a title I suspect she may enjoy for some years yet. Those are some spry genetics. Even better is the story of the time she drove him around Balmoral in her Range Rover, noteworthy on several levels. (Buzzfeed)
- I desperately want to go to this exhibit; if you’re in London this summer, please go and report back. Via The Telegraph: How to make your own Wolf Hall garden: Henry VIII’s horticultural manual revealed. From said article, “it tells gardeners that ‘cucumbers shake with fear at thunder,’ while a squash will bear fruit after precisely nine days if planted in the ashes of human bone and watered with oil.” Maybe that’s why my container garden always fails: insufficient human ashes.
- King Felipe is on the cover of RapGap, a Spanish magazine for the gay community, in support of LGBT equality. You are awesome, Felipe. (Logo)
- Tatler has a Which British Royal Are You? quiz. I got Kate (as if!), but I’m pretty sure I was one naked Vegas jaunt away from being Harry.
- Hello! takes a look at Sophie’s “fashion transformation” on the event of her birthday (which I seriously kept thinking was last week).
- The Royal Hats blog also has, like, ALL of her hats.
- The current Jewel History up at The Court Jeweller is really interesting. (As it always is.)
- And I thought this week’s Tiara Thursday at Royal Order of Sartorial Splendor was also really interesting! (As it always is.)
- Let’s all get matching Vivienne Westwood shirts with Prince Charles’s face on them. (Royal Central)
- You DO want to read this, over at Vanity Fair. I’ll just give you part of the lede: “Of all the palatial London mansions of the British aristocracy obliterated, carved up, or converted over the decades—only one, Dudley House, is now a private home.” LET’S LOOK INSIDE.
- I think you’ll understand why I’m including this: A Map of Every Goat in the United States.
