On her first big day out without Harry, Meghan took the Royal Train up to Cheshire with the Queen for a day of events, and — look. I totally get all these thought pieces that are like THIS IS AN HONOR and THE QUEEN CLEARLY LOVES HER and (a) I absolutely think that Her Majesty doing these events with Meghan is a sign from The Firm that they are fully approving of Meghan and everyone else better get on board (as they should be!), and (b) I honestly believe the Queen DOES really like her (witness her escorting Meghan’s dog to the wedding!), BUT if I were Meghan, I would also be VERY NERVOUS about spending this much time with the beloved matriarch of my husband’s complicated family on my own, especially as she is THE QUEEN. I feel like I’d be all, “yes, this is great, so excited, such an honor, is she gonna spend the whole night quizzing me on The War of the Roses? ARE WE ON THE YORK SIDE OR THE LANCASTER SIDE?” It has to be nerve-wracking to do an engagement solo, but it probably is also nerve-wracking to do one with the boss! Meghan did beautifully, of course — I just hope Harry popped out of their cottage when she got home with a sausage roll in one hand (not a euphemism) and a glass of wine in the other.

Before we dive into the slideshow, your outfit details: I am beginning to wonder if someone told Meghan she is legally required to wear neutrals henceforth, but ideally Kate will swing over to visit and whisper that she can totally wear color if she wants. Having said that, this is very elegant on her. (Officially, I guess it’s pink, but it’s VERY light.) It is once again bespoke Givenchy, like her wedding gown. Take THAT, Emilia Wickstead!
