This was NOT a costume party, it was the premiere of White Nights, the Mikhail Baryshnikov/Gregory Hines Cold War Dance Movie, which — if I recall correctly — was not good but which was also highly entertaining, and which obviously brought us Lionel Richie’s “Say You, Say Me,” which is a forever easy-listening banger. (Fun fact: Directed by Taylor Hackford, it’s the movie on which he met Helen Mirren.) And truly, NOTHING says “let’s celebrate defecting Russian dancers who stand around in the cold and smoke while looking tortured as Phil Collins sings” like a purple wig that might also be referencing Tina Turner. Listen, it was the 80s! Anything was possible.
