As with most MTV shows these days, the VMAs were not great. Katy Perry gave it her gamest stab, and she was energetic, and she stuck to every bit even if it didn’t seem to be working. I was impressed with that, even if the material left me cold. But her best showing was her first one, on the red carpet — which, honestly, is the right direction to go.
