It’s been, oh, 36 years now that Lt. Pete Mitchell’s ego has been writing checks his body can’t cash. Hate this movie or Tom Cruise all you like, but certain elements like that line “Danger Zone” — and the Top Gun Anthem and bad volleyball and Rick Rossovich’s abs and “Take me to bed or lose me forever” — are iconic, at least to me. And of course there’s this dorky delight:
I do, however, feel grateful that — as far as I know, anyway — this movie did not start a trend of men trying to embarrass women into going out with them by making an entire bar join them in a serenade. Mav really could have pulled up before that.
