It seems like there are a LOT of Deadline Contenders events, although maybe I’m conflating them with Times Talks and Variety sit-downs, and of course the bajillion Paley Center panels. We saw the If Beale Street Could Talk cast at this already today, but plenty of other awards hopefuls made the rounds, including Maggie Gyllenhaal, Emily Blunt, and Amandla Stenberg, all three of whom are in movies that seem like Golden Globes candidates because of the split categories — they always need musicals/comedies, so Emily has to be a lock for a nod, right? — but which might have a tougher row to hoe for the Oscars. Here’s hoping being a Deadline Contender moves the needle; I would love to see The Hate U Give have legs.
