Cannes and its absurd standing ovations came to an end, finally, handing out the second-biggest prize to Sentimental Value — the Joachim Trier movie starring Elle Fanning and Renate Reinsve — and the Palme d’Or to Une Simple Accident (which I’ve seen translated to It Was Just An Accident), the first film by Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi since his release from prison. Cate Blanchett popped by to help out with the festivities, and we got a few more faces of L’Oreal, like Simone Ashley and Viola Davis. It’s a starry finish to a starry 10 days, in which the new dress code rules seemed totally beside the point and at times ignored, making you wonder why they even bothered.
