Back in 2009, it took Maya Rudolph pretending to shit explosively in the middle of the street for people to come out and acknowledge that women can be funny. I found that depressing for a lot of reasons — do we have to take shits in strange places to prove ourselves? — but this movie did at least teach the world at large how funny Melissa McCarthy is, and that Rose Byrne can do comedy. Their scenes together in Spy are true delights. Also, this slideshow made me realize that I miss Kristen Wiig. I did not always love her SNL sketches, but even when I was tired of them, she could make me snort just by committing to a particular facial expression. And her complete commitment to this random gag is just… otherworldly:
You do not even need Jonah Hill for that to elicit a snicker.
