At a time when I am questioning so much, including the Dodgers’ once-bulletproof bullpen, Ava DuVernay is comforting. I love the dress and coordinating metallic accessories she’s picked out here, but in general, she exudes a kind of calm competence that makes me think, “Okay, it’s going to get done.” I don’t know what “it” is specifically, or even if she is the one doing “it,” but… somehow her mere presence impels me to believe things are under control. She seems like a smart and thoughtful human being who wants to do things that matter with her talent. And it’s good to be reminded that those people exist, especially when we feel besieged by their opposites. So thank you for being a friend, Ava, and thank you for that fabric. My wallet is less grateful, but whatever. Sit down, wallet.
