Taylor Russell stormed onto the scene this year with bold choices by big, challenging brands — Balenciaga, Schiaparelli, Loewe. This manages to be no less of a statement, but with a certain simplicity to it. The top is vintage Gucci, and I don’t know what the jeans are, but they are the PERFECT throwback ’90s cut if that’s what you want right now. The rise and leg width all feel so NORMAL. Brenda Walsh absolutely would have worn them with a vest, socks, and Docs. The makeup here could have been more fun, and yeah, this might have felt more RIGHT at, say, the British Fashion Awards, rather than the Gotham Awards. But I surprised myself by thinking the experiment works. She looks like the rich girl at your high school who makes a huge deal out of how humble she is by only shopping vintage, but who leaves out the bit about how the price tags are still massive. It’s a vibe, and it plays here for me. Does it for you?
