The American Music Awards haven’t aired since 2022, and will be relaunching nexy year on CBS — which decided to whet our appetites with a big two-hour 50th birthday bash that covered a lot of pop music of yore. Admittedly I did not watch this, because Sunday was a big sports night, and ultimately one full of crushing disappointment!!!!! It was not a HUGE bash — lots of clips packages and then a couple live performances — and seemed aimed squarely at the CBS Matlock demographic. But we did get Jennifer Hudson performing a Whitney Houston tribute; she posted pictures of Whitney’s ensemble from the 1994 American Music Awards, and while this is not a duplicate, it does seem appropriately inspired by it. I’m not sure it will get any of The Youths all that excited for the upcoming AMAs, but as a nostalgia play — and/or a place for people to hide if they didn’t want to watch the Dodgers get clobbered or the Steelers lose — it probably did just fine.
