Imogen here — whose song “Hide and Seek” rose to prominence chiefly thanks to The O.C., when I think it played at a funeral intercut with Marissa Cooper shooting someone — attended the Grammys in 2007 with a mission: being seen. She walked up and down the red carpet the ENTIRE time it was available to her, back and forth, relentlessly making sure everyone saw she had accessorized with actual chunks of lawn. At the time, this made us cranky, because, gasp, it made all this capital-Q Quirk seem inorganic. Oh, so naive. Now we’re in a post-Gaga, post-Kardashian, post-Miley world, where everything on a red carpet is that much more planned and branded than it used to be; quirk for the sake of quirk is so much more run-of-the-mill. Would we even bat an eyelash if Imogen Heap wore this at the 2017 Grammys this weekend, or would we simply yawn and wonder if her cranial lawn is so green because she violated a hosepipe ban?

Actually, I think I know exactly what we’d say: “Congratulations to Kristen Wiig for nabbing the coveted role of Mary Poppins in Spoonful of Sugar, the shocking story of London’s favorite nanny as she spirals into prolonged absinthe abuse.”
