Wicked Little Letters is a dark comedy that looks pretty fun, and I will watch Olivia Colman do just about anything, so there’s that. Her outfit at the European premiere, though, did NOT serve her well. That green part is lovely, but the design looks like she was bored of her black satin separates and stole a table runner to jazz it up. Except I THINK it is actually sewn to the top of the shirt? So it’s one garment. A poncho-blouse. I can’t tell if this is a cultural reference — there is a cheongsam-style collar in there, but I don’t know how the wrap part would play into it, and don’t want to give offense if it’s something traditional. Construction-wise, though, if IS truly sewn together, then the ripply satin is even more inexcusable, because it looks like it wasn’t measured carefully enough. It’s all very underwhelming and muddled, when it could have been striking.
Jessie Buckley is a chameleon to me; she looks different almost every time we see her, and at this party she’s doing a sort of… punk Elle Fanning thing:
It’s like… Elle’s penchant for peach or skin-tones, but with refried hair and some drawstrings.
Here’s the whole crew, including Thea Sharrock next to Jessie — she’s the director — and Timothy Spall down there on the end, looking like he’s planning something. Malachi Kirby’s orange suit is pretty dishy, as is Anjana Vasan’s grey stripes. It’s a fetching crew. No wicked letters from ME. Well… I might still hope Jessie gets a good hot-oil treatment.
