First Elle gives us an excellent editorial-looking cover of Mia Goth, now these very artistic and striking ones from Harper’s Bazaar. Have our nation’s glossy magazines given up on trying to appeal to everyone and gone back to just making art? Given….everything….this seems like a good idea. They’re not going to get new readers, just try and bring back some of your old ones — or keep your current ones — by doing what you used to do best. Both of these covers are really striking. I think the one above is the newsstand cover and this, the arguably artsier one, is the subscriber cover:
Fun fact, the photographer here is Cass Bird, whom some of you may know as Jenna Lyons’s girlfriend. What a power couple! These both feel, for like of a better phrase, like “real” magazine covers. They are confident, well-shot, and interesting. They’re not trying anything, no one is leaning on something in a field. They’re straightforward. They’re good. The profile is well done, and the lede is a delight:
On a bright day in a dark bar in Los Angeles, Cynthia Erivo is as animated as a music box, gilded and tuneful. Her ring-covered hand—its lengthy nails dotted with rhinestones—rests on a pile of gold necklaces across her chest while she runs me through a list of her favorite vocal performances. She starts, of course, with Sisqó’s “Thong Song.”
PLEASE let this somehow end up in Wicked: For Good. (She is correct that the Thong Song is a banger.)
