Lyle, Lyle Crocodile is ABSOLUTELY one of my favorite children’s books of all time and I don’t mean, like, “to give to children” or whatever — although I have done! — I mean, like, “that I recall reading by the light of the kerosene lamps we used one million years ago when I was a child.”  The illustrations in it, and all the other Lyle books, are perfect. They make living in New York with a crocodile seem so charming! They involve a LOT of shenanigans with people’s neighbors, and also people go shopping in them often, and being nosy about the neighbors and going to a department store have turned into two of my favorite things. These books are TREASURES and they are precious to me. (I also loved Bernard Waber’s Ira Sleeps Over.) This is a long way around of saying that I feel protective of this IP and I don’t know if we need a Lyle book, but also why not? The Harriet the Spy movie with lil’ baby Michelle Trachtenberg was an unexpected delight and so might this be. And it is fun to see Constance Wu on the red carpet again. She’s always enjoyed a sparkle — remember this FAB Markarian striped Oscars dress? — and this feels like a real party. Great lip, good bag, the shoes make sense here, no notes!
