Zhang Ziyi became a global celeb with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, in 2000, but as best I can tell she’s only done the Venice Film Festival once — which will change this year, as she’s on the jury, led by Isabelle Huppert. Which means we’re in for a lot of sensible Armani and high-necked, sparkly Balenciaga, by the by. At any rate, we SHOULD, ideally, get an eyeful of some gowns from Ziyi** as well. What to expect, though? Clearly this means we need to look at 40 or so of her memorable outfits from the archives. We deserve nothing less.

** American media outlets used to veer inconsistently between “Zhang Ziyi” and “Ziyi Zhang,” to the point where I could never keep straight which was her name and which was the Americanized version of her name. As best as I can glean now, her given name is Zhang Ziyi, meaning what we would define as her surname is Zhang and her first name, Ziyi. If I’m wrong, please pipe up!
