I recently realized that our last real sunscreen round-up was two years ago! A LOT has happened in sunscreen technology since then, and as we speed toward Memorial Day, a.k.a. the unofficial start of summer, it seemed like the time was ripe to revisit this topic. Personally, I remain a big fan of SuperGoop! (Coincidentally, they appear to be having a sale right now; I swear I did not know that when I sat down to write this.) I love the Unseen Sunscreen — as many of you have pointed out and I agree, the Trader Joe’s dupe for this is also good. I also love it in stick format, because I can put it in my bag and it won’t spill.

Speaking of stick sunscreens, so far I’m really liking the Eadem one, which is made specifically for your face and which you can reapply OVER MAKEUP. (I have not yet tried this because I literally just realized it.) I also like the Bloom Effects stick, which I dug out of the bottom of my bag this weekend at the dog park and was very grateful I had, once I realized I was getting a little toasty out there. I’ve also heard good things about the sunstick from Freaks of Nature, surfer Kelly Slater’s company. He would know sun exposure; I have one of their deodorants and really like it. [And for those of you who are looking for something unscented, I have that Freaks of Nature SPF 50 in the pump, and even to my sensitive nose, it smells like ACTUAL nothingness. It’s thick, so I save it for days when I’m helping Liam with his golf stations for hours, versus popping out on errands, but it works. — H]

As mentioned last time, when I am in a real Lie By the Pool mood, I love Vacation — their branding is so good and it’s just fun to use. I went through like three bottles of their Chardonnay Oil last summer, and I love that they’ve recreated the iconic Orange GelĂ©e. [I have also been using and loving the Ultra Violette 50 SPF, which is lightly tinted, and the Good Weather 30 SPF, which is supposed to be great on darker skin tones where you don’t want any cast — though I am pale and cannot vouch for that part. Both of those go on nice and smooth and do not feel greasy at all, nor do you need to use a lot. I also keep around a few Glow Recipe Watermelon Dew Shields for when I DO want a fun scent. I don’t even like watermelons, but I like this smell and the fact that it DOESN’T make me think of a pool on days when I cannot be in one. Finally, one bean’s dermatologist sent him home with some EltaMD SPF 46 and it’s already made a difference to his pores, which were stressed out from regular old Coppertone and Banana Boat and such. It comes in tinted or clear. Not as cheap as I’d like, but great if you need to calm things down for a minute.– H]
