A few years ago, I read a very helpful Tweet — or something similarly zippy and short-form — reminding everyone that you do not have to make boring or hard or noble New Year’s resolutions, and this is what I like to tell people when they tell me that they don’t “do” New Year’s resolutions. I mean, you do you — you are not legally required to make a resolution! No one really cares! — but it’s fun to remember that you’re allowed to make fun and low-pressure, low-stakes, silly New Year’s resolutions, if you want to do that. For example, the person who wrote this Tweet (or whatever) had resolved to try more weird-shaped pastas. Personally, my 2026 New Year’s resolution is simply to try to have more fun. (And also to work on my flexibility.) I respect if you have a Serious Resolution, and please share if it you want our support, which we will happily provide — but I also encourage you to make a Silly, Low Stakes, Fun Resolution if you want! Like, maybe you want to eat more various kinds of donuts. Maybe you want to wear sillier socks! Maybe you have resolved to pet more dogs or use the phrase “exsqueeze me” more in professional correspondence. I cannot stress enough how much we all have to make our own fun these days.

So, did you make a New Year’s Resolution? Please share with the class! (And PS, if you commented on last year’s version of this post and want to see what you said, you can eyeball that here. One of you had resolved to “eat better cheese,” and I hope you did that!)
