As I noted at the time — a stance I have doubtless exhausted you with more times since — Zac Posen sometimes goes totally off the rails, but when he gets it right, he gets it so right. Sophie’s stylist for this, Sarah Slutsky, posted this as a Tonys throwback on Instagram and I gasped when I saw it just as loudly as I did the first time. This pattern remains one of my favorites; we saw it once or twice in other incarnations, one of which I believe was Judith Light, but I particularly love this one on Sophie. It fits divinely on her. The sleeves are super. And the light flare where the bodice peels away from her shoulders harmonizes with the cut of the hem. It’s the type of thing that, if I had gotten to wear and keep it, would have me storing it painstakingly in my closet but then getting it out and unzipping the bag just a little so I could talk to it or touch it gently or sniff it or maybe have lunch while I stared at it. I hope she’s wearing it right now, drinking her refreshment of choice.
