And so it begins! The Met Gala’s theme last night was “camp” — as in Susan Sontag’s “Notes On,” not “go sleep in a cabin amid the trees and pretend you like nature” — and I fully expect that people will be divided on the question of whether or not any given look adhered to theme. (I find camp to be sort of hard to define in 2019, in part because I think a lot of what Sontag wrote about is really mainstream pop culture right now; I must confess also that while I read that essay in college, I totally bullshitted my way through that week in class. It’s coming back to bite me on the ass now!) Let’s kick off today’s coverage with our hosts: Lady Gaga, Harry Styles, and Serena Williams. I’d argue that only one of these people really nailed it.
