My Oxford Year is a rom-com based on Julia Whelan’s novel, and while I certainly do not demand that everyone come to premieres dressed in thematically appropriate garb, it IS a weird choice for a dress that summons the ghost of Madeline Kahn entering Hill House and purring, “Do you know who I am?” or smashing her glass against the fireplace.
This is not a bad thing; if they want to make a movie about Mrs. White’s husband, the nuclear physicist, or the other one who wasn’t a very good illusionist, then Sofia is making a compelling case for herself. Otherwise, it’s a bit of a weird choice. We know Sofia loves a dramatic sartorial moment, but they DO start to run together after a while — kind of like how if a person yells all the time, you learn to tune them out, or how you can go nose-blind to whatever is in your fridge. At least echoes of Mrs. White gives us new vibes to go with, you know?
She’s in the movie with aspiring Franco brother Corey Mylchreest:
What do you think she’s about to whisper to him?
Or perhaps:
Or there’s always the classic:
Was there another one you were waiting for?
Just kidding:
Thank you, Sofia, for enabling me on this Friday morning.
